I have a lot of emotions when I think about my visit to New York. It's a city full of gems waiting to be discovered, and a lot of misconceptions. I didn't find New York to be full of rude people or an unmanageable hustle and bustle. Instead, I found a remarkable city that accommodates all the people within it with amazing ease. The transportation is amazingly efficient and Manhattan, very clean. (I do recognize things change once you leave the touristy areas, radiating outward, that things are always much different.) All that being said... I feel we accomplished the unthinkable. Chris and I saw New York (Manhattan) in a weekend. Operating on no more than 4 hours of sleep, due to celebrating Chris's birthday with his family late the night before, I rolled out of ... read more

Friday, May 25th, 2007 - Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas Gas prices are expected to reach its peak during this Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial starting date for 2007 summer traveling season for millions of Americans. According to today’s edition of USA Today, 1 out of 8 Americans are traveling more than 50 miles from their home this weekend; a staggering number of 38 millions travelers, of which 32 millions are driving with their gas-devouring motorized vehicles. I found myself being caught among the rest 6 millions American travelers who opted for air transportation this weekend. Either way, gasoline demand is at its highest, and I witnessed the average gasoline price in Atlanta to be $3.11/gallon, compared to $3.24/gallon nationally. Waiting for my 5:10pm flight departure from Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport to Dallas/Fort Worth, I was executing my ... read more

This time I was in Chicago visiting my friends M&A. I took a plane in on Saturday and stayed at a hotel out near O'Hare... which, by the way, is much less expensive than in the city... though it is a 45 min. CTA ride (@ $2/trip) to the Loop; extended stay hotels (e.g. Staybridge Suites) are relatively inexpensive out by the airport, though I stayed at the Doubletree with my hotel points). Sunday morning I took the CTA to the Roosevelt stop just south of the Loop. It was then a short walk to the Field Museum and Shedd Aquarium (both next to each other and on the south side of Grant Park). The plan was to meet M&A around noon and go to to Shedd Aquarium. However, since this was Memorial Weekend, the line ... read more

Took a day trip to Atlantic City. Left early on a Saturday morning and arrive in AC in less than 2 hours. Found a parking spot and immediately took a leisure stroll along the boardwalk. It was nice. Stopped by to check out shops along the way..., dashed into a casino for a restroom stop and enjoyed the ocean view from the upper level of buildings. The Piers shop at Ceasars, surrounded by panoramic, floor-to-ceiling windows, is one of the newest additions to the boardwalk shopping experiences with 80+ retail stores and restaurants. The third level is the best place to sit on a rocking chair and enjoy the sunset views at sea. One of the free attractions in the mall is The Show which is a dramatic blend of music, light, water and sound show ... read more

North America » United States » Pennsylvania » Erie May 28th 2007

After a day on the road, we made our first detour in Erie, PA. Neither of us knew much about Erie. I think collectively we knew that there was a Lake Erie, an Erie Canal and that if you added another ‘e’ than you got the word that meant ‘spooky’. We also knew that is was in Pennsylvania, and to us that meant the Pennsylvania Dutch and the Liberty Bell. Yep. That’s pretty much what we knew. A whole lot of not-very-much-that’s-useful. Perhaps that’s why we both jumped at the chance to stop and explore this city at the invitation of a friend of ours. What we came to find out is that Erie has a lot to boast about! This self-deprecated “Mistake on the Lake” is anything but. We met up with our hostess for ... read more

I am currently on the most awkward computer I've ever been on (seating and screen-size wise) so apologies if this lacks proper effort! We arrived in San Francisco yesterday - the airport was much busier than we've seen before because it's Memorial weekend over here (like Poppy day, but they make it last and get time off work). It took us a while to clear security, but the flight itself was only about 2 hours. The hostel we're at is nice - it's handy having free internet (though I'm currently at the worst PC ever!) and the room's fine. Had no sleep last night though because of some guy in our dorm snoring louder than I thought possible. Aaron was of course completely oblivious to it in the morning. Am hoping he'll have moved on ... read more

These early morning flights are killers. Leaving Anchorage like leaving darwin at 2 in the morning. We have had such an emotional sendoff: sad to leave Lisa who has been such a fantastic host, elated to have just seen bears and not only one but four, must local local would never have such an experience; sad again because we have come to the end of our Alaskan adventure so jam packed with heart stopping moments and as Maree said " I have never had such a sustained good time in my entire life"; but once again prepared for new challenges and more adventures. Through boarding security "You have been selected (once again) to participate in our increased security measures......come this way". It Maree's bloody hair, I am sure. Again everything off . Answer their questions. My ... read more

Hi friends. I was told by the helpful automated e-mail confirming my sign-up at this site that if I don't have a real entry within 48 hours of creating my account, I will be removed from the system for fear I am a robot. But robots deserve to travel too. SoI will provide you with a discourse on my travels, expanding on the little description above. The program I am embarking on is called Globalization and Resistance in Latin America; it is first and foremost a sociology class, focusing on the upheaval of Latin America and its indigenous populations. We will be doing a lot of community work, talking to administrators and government officials, etc, to learn first-hand about life in South America. As part of the class we are required to have an internship. My ... read more
