This week has been pretty busy. I picked Jade up from the airport from India. She had spent a few weeks there and it looks like she had a phenomenal time! She also shared with me all of the things that she refrained from telling me when we briefly spoke throughout the trip! (i.e. getting stuck in the middle of a political protest etc). I really think that she has gained a huge perspective on the world now and what it is like to live in absolute poverty. That must be a fairly intense and eye-opening experience. After we dropped her off at the Airport to fly home the day after she came in to Toronto, Hanmu and I drove to Yorkville to pick up our Chinese Visas. Compared to my experiences at the US ... read more

Rachel and I spent the last three weeks in Yosemite Valley after a great Southern Utah tour through Bryce, Capitol Reef, and Zion Natl. Parks. Presently we are in the luxury Ahwanee Hotel poaching as much electricity as we can to recharge cameras, phones, and the confuser. The weather here has been absolutely splitter with bluebird skies and nary a drop of rain. We have been ticking many Yosemite classics averaging 8-10 pitches a day, five days a week. Climbs include Serenity/Sons of Yesterday, East Buttress of Middle Cathedral, E. Butt of El Cap, cragging at the Cookie and Pat & Jacks, the Nutcracker, a day at Glacier Point, Astrobaby (the first three pitches of Astroman) and most recently a one day ascent of Half Dome via the Regular Route. This was a stellar route ... read more

Day one: Arrived at LAX airport and waited around for what should have been 6 hours, turned into 7 hours as the domestic cabin crew decided to turn up an hour late. Anyways so after spending most that time laying around on the seats in the airport come a 5 hour flight to Newark (NY) and it was a horrible flight did not sleep a wink!!! I was starting to feel a bit tired! Day two: Arrived into Newark airport at 7.30 am, from there we caught the shuttle to New Jersey to our hotel, the shuttle driver a very proud american decided to give us a break down of all the wildlife, greenery, people, shops, roads, air, sea, anything that he could think of he talked and talked and talked about so our trip to ... read more

We are off to Whittler to catch the ferry to Valdez. WoW another absolutely awesome drive and now on the Marine Highway cruizin the waterways of Prince William Sound. We could be on a Manly Ferry except that: we are going faster, there are way less people, no cars or buildings in sight and snow capped mountains all around and come down to the shore line. The road to Whittler took us back past the 7 glaciers resort of Alyeska. So we took a detour to check what it looked like on a clear sunny Alaskan morning.... more wow...We would love to spend some more time here but need to drive to get to Whitter by 11.30 to book into the ferry. We stopped at the Jade Factory (which was closed when we were in ... read more

Two weeks ago I had the coolest family reunion ever. First, my Dad came down to Mexico to visit me. We spent Thursday night in Cuernavaca and he got to meet my host mom, Celia, and her sister Lety. These are two of the most amazing women I have ever met. They are both divorced, with children who are grown and out of the house, and live together in a beautiful house in Cuernavaca. They rent the extra rooms out students, both Mexican and foreign, and have anywhere from four to eight students at a time. They are both beautiful women, inside and out. They are so happy, so full of life and adventure. I aspire to be like them when I'm their age. I think they made quite an impression on my Dad too. ... read more

Friday June 1 and we're finally off on the long awaited and highly anticipated trip to the Pacific Northwest. We left work a bit early and headed down to Union Station. From there, we caught the MARC Train, the commuter train that runs from D.C. to Maryland, and made for BWI Airport. We decided to fly from Baltimore instead of D.C. because the tickets were so much cheaper. It's a hassle to get there, although not much moreso than going to Dulles, but when the tickets are more than $200 cheaper each it's worth it. Our flight left BWI just before 8:00 and we chased the sunset to Seattle. We arrived a few minutes early, starting our remarkable run of good luck that would last for the entire trip. For some reason the guy at the ... read more

It has been a long day. I finally pull off highway onto a small gravel road. After a calorific supper consisting of corn beef bagel sandwiches (Did you know that there can be as many as 300 calories in a single bagel?) I perch my tent on a hill behind some bushes. Have been riding across Northern California on Highway 36, a twisty little fellow whose snakey curves are too much for the logging trucks that have been breathing down my neck on Highway 89 for the previous couple of days. Am camping wild tonight after a pleasant conversation with a security guard who explained if I wanted to stay on his private ranch (field) I would have to pay the annual $5,000 fee. No thanks. So tonight it is just me, my bike, a ... read more

Geo: 38.8921, -77.0241Alex's thoughts: I think that going to Turkey is going to be a lot of fun. I'm going on a train for the first time. I am going to sleep on the train. I think it's going to be pretty easy to fall asleep on the train because the sleeper car was made to have people sleep on it. I think there will be melons in Turkey. They are supposed to be the best melons. I think they will taste great. I like to eat them cold. I think they will have some different kinds of melons from the ones that we have in America. I hope they have Fruit Roll-ups there. They are delicious. When we get to Turkey we will use buses, trains and airplanes. I know how to say "excuse me" in ... read more

I successfully made it through the first segment of my internship assignment in New York. I spent the 3 weeks collecting and organizing demographic information for Laerdal's major market segments (Healthcare, Pre-Hospital, Professional Education, Government, and National Accounts). I used information from existing marketing plans, databases the company had purchased, previously collected demographic information from other Laerdal departments/employees, and LOTS of Google searches!! I combined all the information into Excel spreadsheets for each market segment to show comparisons across various sources and discrepancies within the existing information. I also created a "bibliography" to provide details and websites for the sources I used (in case Laerdal employees would like to access or cite the same sources in the future) and a PowerPoint presentation summarizing what I had done and th... read more
