So I'm here at the UCen, technically ditching class because I had to drop mom off at an appointment, so I'm taking advantage of it, and allowing myself to just relax until 9:10am. But last night I began packing (something I probably shouldn't have done considering the volumes of research I have to do...), and it was an interesting insight into myself. As I looked at the neat piles of shirts, pants, shorts and sweaters on the end of my bed, I noticed that the dominant colors were black, blue, and green with some red thrown in. It was really interesting, I thought I would have chosen other clothes that were brighter, but I didn't. Needless to say, I have my clothes decided on. I finally got my backpack clean (it smelled like a pigs' sty...sorry ... read more

Very Short Notice Good Luck Mechanic SPC Thomas Regan of Topeka, KS, assigned to the 250th FSC KSARNG, was killed in an automobile accident last weekend. His widow, Rebecca, requested the attendance of the Patriot Guard at his wake and burial. Bring your big flags. Ride Captain is Mechanic. ------- That is how they come. A simple email followed with the instructions on where and when to meet up, or ‘stage’ as they like to call it. The request for the Patriot Guard to join them was late coming, with less then 24 hours notice, 20 riders showed up in Leavenworth, KS, Thursday morning at 9:30am. This would be my first funeral with the Patriot Guard. I had ridden in the 24th Marines Homecoming, but that was different. The visitation was the previous night, but I ... read more

Wyoming became the 44th state in 1890. Devils Tower became the first National Monument in 1906. Teddy Roosevelt was President at that time. The various Native American tribes had different names for The Tower and many had bear in the name, such as Bear Lodge. There are many legends and the one that we saw a picture of included a bear scratching the side to get to some children on the top of the tower. It is a sacred area and is still the center for ceremonies. June is especially sacred and there is a request for a voluntary refrain from climbing The Tower. Devils Tower is 865 feet high and the top is the size of a football field. We hiked around the base of Devils Tower. It’s 1 ¼ mile trail and is supposed ... read more

UntitledHello all, seeing as it is the end of my first leg of my round the world adventure, having made it to Mexico, ticking off Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatamala and Belize in the past month, and I have yet to write anything to anyone I have decided to make the most of cheap internet and see how things are back in the real world. This morning saw the last of my trip depart, which was a little weird with everyone so excited to go home, and me knowing that I have six months to go. So it is good and bad, said goodbye to plenty of friends but am looking forward to once again having the freedom to do what I want when I want, even if that is not very much! Have been looking ... read more

Only one more sleep and we're off to Peru! We're packed and petless (dog and fish) and can't wait for the adventure ahead. We take off tomorrow morning at 7:00 am, that means we'll be at the airport, backpacks and all at 5:00 am. We fly to Houston and then onto Lima. 10 hours total and lots of time to get some snoozing in... maybe even some last minute research. We've been researching and planning this trip for months now. It's finally time to see our plans in action and experience Peru as much as we can in 3 weeks. We'll try and update this blog as much as we can to keep you all in the loop. Here's a rough itinerary: June 2-4 Lima for some sight seeing in Miraflores (a nice suburby area). June ... read more

North Platte Nebraska drew us in because it has the worlds largest active train yard. And there's a giant viewing platform of the whole yard, so that you can oversee all of the hustle and bustle. Or at least there was...or there will be. When we got there there was a big sign showing the plans for the future overlook and museum, replacing the old rickety one. So, we had the luck of being right smack in the middle of construction. Onward we go, down to Kinsley, Kansas. Kinsley's claim to fame is its exact location (in miles) halfway between New York City and San Francisco. They also have a free museum run by the historical society full of everything you could ever dream of from the turn of the 20th century. Tehre were cases ... read more

Wednesday night we camped out at East Harbor State Park in Ohio, about half an hour away from Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, Ohio (west of Cleveland). We arrived at the campgrounds around 7:00pm, built a campfire, ate burgers and hotdogs, then went to bed. We woke up early on Thursday morning so we could be at the entrance gate at Cedar Point by 10:00am when the park opens. a href=" http://www.cedarpoint.com/" target="_blank"Cedar Point is the Roller Coaster Capital of the World! The rides here are the most intense we have EVER been on. They were the fastest, tallest, scariest rides - I'm pretty sure we had mild concussions by the afternoon. Not kidding. More pictures and stories later. gotta go. ... read more
