Tuesday June 17th 2008 Beautiful sunny day in Homer, warmest yet as we pack up. Set out for Seward, stopped at Cooper Landing, Gwins Lodge for lunch at noon a log roadhouse, located at the Kenai and Russian rivers confluence. They fish for sockeye (red) salmon, getting to the other side of the river by barge. Huge rivers. On to Seward a beautiful town flanked by rugged mountains on Resurection Bay On July 4th people run up Mt Marathon and kind of skid down on the shale - mad. Went to the Exit Glacier in the Kenai Fjords National Park. John, Mike and I walked the Overlook Loop Trail, seeing bear and moose droppings on the path all along the way. You get quite close to the glacier and it was very surreal, returned back to ... read more

"I'm tired but not sleepy". My clock is messed up! "It's so cold here!" We even prepared by wearing socks, long pants, and light jackets. "Get out of the way! You're blocking the escalator!" Western people ride an escalator side-by-side, but Asian people stand one behind the other for the benefit of anyone wanting by. It took a moment to remember that people standing beside their companions were not being inconsiderate. "$11.95 for a sandwich? I love a server with a sense of humour!" We can believe neither the sky-high prices in Canada, nor the meekness with which people just pay. We don't have to turn around and smile at people when we hear English spoken. We hope that people are patient when we fumble our money, and try to pay for something with an NTD ... read more

Last night me and Sara Tex took Greg out to teach him how to pick up chicks. In all honesty, we more or less handed him a chick, he didn't have to do much work, but hey! Who's really keeping track. I am deeply saddened that I have only two weeks left in this great place. The good news is, I will be able to carry on with Genetic Alliance as a fellow, while I develop a resource for young children between the ages of 5 and 12 who have a brother or sister with a genetic disease or disability. I'm designing a model probably based on one disorder, like a booklet or something, that will then be customizable for any group that wants to use it just by changing some of the information and whatnot. ... read more

Preparation-Preparation There were a few jobs to cross off the list, to make this a very special day for Bryce & Tina. It was forecasted, to be a paltry 100F! and 100 % humidity (38celcius & dripping). Bobby & Bucky worked hard to restore power to the Pavillion- home of the ceremony. Then managed also to string up - with B's help I think!- cute fairy lights. Kristen single handedly, not deterred by the hungry mossies, set up all the tables. Nat & James rolled menu card's, Margo & Marie spent hours putting together some stunning floral arrangements, button-holes and boquets. I bumbled around Margo's kitchen, making the food, & managing to avoid "potty mouth'- no mean feat. Kristen managed to whip up some amazing Maryland Crabcakes, with a Remoulade sauce. I need the recipe. After ... read more

It was a short 25 minutes flight from Kona to Maui on Island Air. I noticed that the flight was half full of Europeans - US must be a cheap destination with the weak US$. We flew over the eastern corner of Kaho'olawe and the top of Molokini on our way to Kahului, Maui. We picked up our rental car and headed straight south to Wailea ... with Lauren being my navigator. As we pulled into our hotel driveway half hour later, I was immediately taken back. I told my sister before we left for Hawaii that we would be staying at Fairmont Kea Lani in Maui and my sister reminded me that this was the beautiful hotel that we visited in 2001 for our parents' 50th wedding anniversary. My niece, Shannan, had such fond memories ... read more

This is my first trial entry on Travelblog. As you can see, I haven't left the country yet. I'm just sitting in Concord, wishing my computer didn't hate the wireless router so much. Anyways, tomorrow or Monday I'm going to put in a more interesting test entry about the party tomorrow. I'll be testing out putting up pictures and such...... read more

Cubcake and I went to the Ripley's Believe It Or Not and Palace of Wax. It was a spur of the moment decision after a full two days at Hurricane Harbor and Six Flags Over Texas. The place is TOTAL kitsch and while enjoyable really once you see it once you don't have to see it again. Ever. The first section was the Palace of Wax. The highlight is the plethora of movie stars present, from Star Trek to Dirty Harry to J. Lo. Some are very life-like while others are questionably waxy looking and creepy. Presidents came next, all of them, even the obscure ones like Franklin Peirce and Chester Arthur. Who? By this time it became evident that they ought to hire a stylist. I resisted the urge to just cross over the dividing ... read more

Woke up and had the included breaky. Pretty average. Not much options. Just grabbed a croissant. After that it was on the bus to go to the helicopters for those who chose to do that optional which was almost everyone. We all got weighed and watched a safety video. The choppers were all delayed due to high winds and were almost canceled which would have sucked big time. The delays ended up not being too long. I got to ride shot gun with the pilot. Awesome. It was so good. I thought it might be kinda scary, me hating heights and all but it was just amazing. Blows you away. The weather was overcast and misty but still got some good photos. Its so cool flying into the canyon. You start flying over trees etc and ... read more
