Today was the only day that Bonnie could take me to do my shopping for all the bits and pieces I need for school which I start on sunday ahhhhhhh I am so nervous but excited!!! So we left at 9am as she had to be at work at 12.30pm First we went to the Dollar store and I got pretty much all the stuff I needed for $50 so just over £25 it was amazing! I still needed a few things so we went to Wallmart by this time we had about 20 mins till we needed to drive back so it was like a supermarket sweep, trolley dash it was hilarious I was rushing down aisles trying to find the bits I needed and when I found them throwing them in my trolley, screeching ... read more

Greetings from STL. We decided it would be pretty neat to see some fireworks over the Gateway Arch in St. Louis (just once). Hey when in Rome..... We never managed to make it down to the fireworks over the DC Mall (over the WA monument, something I miss, but always too crowded, HOT and stormy). So no regrets in St. Louis. The night was very pleasant, low 80s to high 70s and a nice breeze. I guess this is not the typical heat wave that normally has descended on the St. Louis area this time of year, so we feel like we lucked out in a big way. No rain (or thunder), so we head downtown. First stop, Pappy’s BBQ. This isn’t K.C., but it’s the BEST we have had in STL.... yummy and they have ... read more

To make these postings more coherent and less spastic I am breaking them up into several different topics... That said, this last week was spent in Custer SD, (15 minutes or so from Mt Rushmore) enjoying a wide variety of experience and adventure- not the least of which was the wonderful people we met. Having never been much of a social butterfly I expected this trip to be defined by its solitude and asceticism- embracing the simple life, living off of the radar so to speak, spending little, and seeing much. Not unlike every other plan I ever tried to make, this changed within hours of our arrival in Custer. Initially the plan looked like this- Arrive in Custer on Friday , stay the weekend at French Creek Campground/RV park then move on to a primitive ... read more

The Nintendo DS Lite appears to be the only one of my many rechargeable gadgets whose charger is NOT dual-voltage. This means a simple plug adapter won't cut it... a step-down transformer is necessary to prevent DS fryage. Step-down transformers are almost literally bricks to carry around. They suck. And for one appliance? Some posters in online fora say that buying the European adapter from Nintendo works absolutely fine for charging a US DS Lite, but Nintendo's support website actually says you'd be better off buying a whole 'nother DS Lite game console in Europe. I can see where Nintendo might have nefarious corporate reasons for suggesting such a thing, but I'm also not confident in online gamers' having any deep understanding of how electricity works. This is a tough decision, especially since the DS Lite ... read more

What's hot: Completing the coast-to-coast drive, 3900 miles. What's also hot: Nevada Desert: 96 degrees What's not: Elko, NV The road: Paul gets stopped by Nevada cop for failure to use turn signals. Travel lesson of the day:Get a trip mascot. from Kathy: Arrived at my friend Susan's house in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury section last night at 7:45. The last time I drove across country, it was also to see Susan--in 1973! After 12 days, the beautiful vistas began to look alike and, for the first time, we listened to hilarious Canadian Comedy Factory podcasts and finished Into the Wild by Jon Krakower, almost all of the 500 miles we drove yesterday. Scott played Tetris and Scrabble. Scott and Paul continued their long-running License Plate game. At sta... read more

OK, day two..... started off nice.. had a good breakfast at the hotel, got keys for the house early and even had time to go search for the elusive pineapple bun again... Knew I was off to a bad start when we didn't find the buns... After we checked out, I was walking to the parking lot, breathing with my mouth open and kinda of in awe of the outside of the hotel... when some freakoid, says to me... what are you laughing at... I'm like what? huh??? Just keep walking... just keep walking.... We walk up to the house... look on the outside and a window with a torn up curtain... bad sign... is it sketchy?? don't know... can't check in until 3... but we wanted to drop our car off..... The house is located ... read more

well i made it to hawaii without complication... just waiting for my ship to come in. i recently spoke to ian, the skipper, which was a refreshing conversation as i have not heard from him in awhile and paranoia was slowly seeping into consciousness. but all is well and i still have a ride to australia, but ian stated the pacific winds have been slow and unsteady, delaying his arrival from california... this is a bummer for me as i have to extend my stay here in waikiki... nothing to do here but relax, surf (mostly paddle actually), hike, and booze it up here in the rainbow state. i'll just have to make the best of it... (sigh) the loss of convenience has settled indifferently today as i laundered my clothes in the bath tub of ... read more

Tonight we interupt this blog for a Wildlife Report for Steve Wight. We often interupt selectmen's meetings for discussion of recent wildlife sightings and I don't want Steve to miss out. Wildlife sighted so far on this trip include: White tail deer in Illinois; Jackrabbit in a Colorado train station, Parie dogs in Denver (a little village between the tracks and the road): mule deer in Colorado; a tortoise in Nevada; fox kits in Nebraska; black tail deer in Utah; more cows, horses and goats than you could count; Magpies all over; pelicans; various ducks in several states; and Elk today in California. Funky star fish on the beach today as well. Not much hangs around the train tracks, but we have spotted a few things. One quick story and it's off to bed with me. ... read more

After having a blast at the family reunion, we left Flat Head Lake on Monday and headed towards Glacier National Park in northern Montana with Bird and Bob and the Tabor family (Patty's sister). We traveled on the "highway to the sun" (which just opened a few weeks ago because of snow) through the park and we stopped at Logan Pass for a hike. The hike was 90% on the snow and we saw some great wildlife (see pics). We spent the last three nights at Many Glacier Hotel in the heart of Glacier National park. The hotel is only open three months a year (June through August) and it is where Stephen King got the idea for the movie "The Shining". It was built in the early 1900s and not much has changed with the ... read more

So, what have I done? Since being home, I've been working at this house for Steve and Melissa from my mom's office (the expeditionary studies department of SUNY Plattsburgh). One of the students from the department has been working with them and helped me get this work so I wouldn't be stuffed in the back office of some company doing the most senseless work possible. I've learned how to run electrical outlets and installed lights and switches. I've done work all over the house from sanding and cleaning, to learning how to drive a tractor. I enjoy my job, and even more than that, the people I work with. In addition to that, I've met a lot of kids from the department. I went out with them one night to Peabody's which was not something I ... read more
