I'm afraid this blog will be going dormant for a while, hopefully not too long. We were in Quartzsite, AZ for a rally and two days before it started, Natalie had a stroke. She was airlifted to a hospital in Las Vegas and I visited her for a couple days before going back to get the rig. Now we are in Las Vegas and I will be able to visit her every day until she's fully recovered. More soon, I hope.... read more

Last weekend, I headed out to New Orleans with my co-worker and long time friend, Christina. We were stopping by for our friend's birthday party on the way to a conference near Chicago. I started out with a huge fish and chips meal at the Canucks restaurant at YVR, boarded a plane to Houston, then on to New Orleans. United Airlines does not have movie screens and the app barely works onboard so read most of the flight. We arrived in New Orleans at 9:30 pm, dropped our bags at the hotel and headed out to the Abbey Pub to meet our co-worker, Claire, who was also in town for a conference. Her local friends (Lulu and Jason) gave us some great tips for seeing the best city sights in one weekend. After some beers, we ... read more

We managed to find a cheap $700 Alaska cruise deal so fit in an extra summer vacation this year. The cruise only went one way so we used Aeroplan points to fly up to Anchorage Alaska. We got there a day early which gave us time to look around town and get a special bus out to Whittier with a bonus stop – the Alaska Wildlife Park. But to back up a bit, we had a short 3 hour flight to Anchorage, Alaska. We stayed at a cheap hotel, Ingra House with creaky beds, a separate washroom and tons of security – oh well. We walked into town down 6th street, past the cemetery, the Sheraton, the museum, the mall and made it to Resolution Park (which was under construction). We followed a trail ... read more

It was in turn fantastic, beautiful, heartbreaking, educational, exhausting, inspiring, disappointing, marvelous, exciting and just plain fun. We are back in Ocean Shores as of late this afternoon. I managed to change my pace almost immediately (think about nine weeks worth of mail). I think it will take until the end of the week to completely unpack the van, re-clean the house, re-stock the refrigerator etc. John has unfortunately come home with a chest cold. He started with a cough on Sunday. This morning he was feeling like he had a proper cold. I have doubled my vitamin C, started taking echinacea and I am washing my hands a lot. We don't have any plans or commitments this week, so he can rest, regroup and revive. We were so lucky with the weather and our health ... read more

Today we did not have any plans in Portland so we decided to sleep in and then we headed over to “Bread and Friends,” for brunch. We tried their smoked maple rosemary latte and five spice miso caramel latte, everything pull apart, and crispy red bliss potatoes. Everything was delicious and worth the wait in line for a table. After brunch Renata and I headed over to check out the creepy Victoria Mansion before we all decided to spend our last day doing last-minute souvenir shopping. We ended our day at a portside restaurant called “The Porthole” where I tried my last Maine Lobster Roll in Portland . Renata and I then headed over to “Lincolns,” our first speakeasy experience. The entrance looked kind of questionable but once inside we were greeted by the staff who ... read more

There is always so much to be thankful for: our family, our health, our friends and Lulu! Actually what Pooh and Piglet had to say, says it all! We are thankful for today. Today is our favorite and we hope it is yours, too. Get your time machines back out again. We have to back up before we can go forward. Cory and I finally got our new tent set up. Actually, the friendly fellows next door to us lent their hands and strength in the process. Thank you, Dave & Vinnie. Lulu even pitched in….best she could…..she has limitations remember. She checked the roof for any issues. All was good according to Supervisor Lulu. We are able to set up extra chairs so our “coffee klatch” can accommodate more friends. “If you build it, they ... read more

Downtown Chicago may surprise you as much as it did us as it is an architectural wonder on one of our five Great Lakes. The confluence of Lake Michigan and the Chicago River ensures this world class city as an important cargo route. These waterways are surrounded by modern skyscrapers, well planned boardwalks and parks which lend this city to be extremely attractive and walkable. The public transportation makes it easy to visit from many of the suburbs. Nearby Union Station has amazing architecture, excellent signage as well several shops, restaurants, and vending machines. Chicago is known as “The Windy City” and many think it is due to the wicked cold winds coming off Lake Michigan…. There are some summer days that feel cold, but winter can be unbearable with the changing microclimates. In reality --it ... read more

We woke up early in the morning and headed to the Portland airport to pick up our rental car to head to Bangor. After a stopover at Dunkin Donuts (Drea’s favourite!), we made it to Bangor just before 9:00 am for our Stephen King tour of Derry, Maine (aka. Bangor). Some of the interesting things we learned on the tour included 1. The philanthropic impact the Kings had on Bangor such as setting up scholarship funds, building baseball fields, community pools and playgrounds, and improving the hospital and library infrastructure without putting his name on any of it except of course his local rock’n roll radio station, WKIT 2. Ensuring that a Ronald McDonald House was established in Bangor 3. Learning about Carrie and seeing the house used as inspiration. “Carrie,” was one of Stephen King’s ... read more

Breathtaking! I visited the Grand Canyon for the first time on Monday. I burst into tears. I knew that photos, films, calendars etc. couldn't do justice to the natural beauty. I did not know how moved I would be. I expected to be impressed, I was awestruck. Then the Hoover Dam. Forget the engineering, building and maintenance of this dam, it is art deco architecture. I believe it is law that you must exit through Las Vegas. We had a good few hours of slot machines and people watching. I’m writing this whilst sitting in the traveling van (see what I did there?) looking at a gray and pink sunset in Eureka, California. John is napping after England vs. Malta. There is an Indian restaurant a very short walk away. This will be our first Indian ... read more

We woke up bright and early so that we could make it to the Portland Headlight for sunrise. The Portland Headlight was one of the main reasons why we wanted to go to Portland. Portland Headlight Some interesting facts about the Portland Headlight include: 1. it is stated to be the oldest lighthouse in Maine 2. it is one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world. 3. it is also one of only four authorized by George Washington and never rebuilt. 4. it includes a light tower, keepers’ quarters, a whistle house, a paint locker and a garage I enjoyed watching the sunrise while scrolling around the Portland Headlight and Fort Williams Park. After being mesmerized by the Portland Lighthouse, we headed to Becky Dinner for Breakfast. Then it was time to explore the shops ... read more
