This summer I spent four month in South East Alaska. While working on a cruise ship I had the chance to explore the beautiful Alaskan coast and even was able to explore a few of the towns we docked at. In my free time I went on quite a few hikes, but also was lucky enough to jump on a few excursions to see some of the beautiful landscape and wildlife that Alaska provides. While I managed to see quite a few whales and eagles, within the time spent up here, I had not been able to spot any bears within the last four month, so I was more than excited when our excursion team offered me to join one of bear viewing tours on the last week of our Alaska season. Of course it is ... read more

Thursday 5thOctober 2023 Corner Brook, Newfoundland Went up the fjord to Corner Brook that seemed to be quite a large town. Off the ship by 11.00am (it didn’t dock until 10.30am!) and after asking at Information if there were any hidden gems, She thought awhile and then said ‘Not really’!!). On to a shuttle into the town! It was quite a large town, very well organised, and we were greeted at the other end of the five-minute shuttle, by more people with information!! Overheard a conversation that said that the City Hall behind them was open, and we could go to the rooftop garden for free wifi and views over the city! Then went to the British Legion to get tickets for Screeching at 1.00pm (I’de never heard of it!!) walked to the wooden Church and ... read more

Friday 6thOctober 2023 Cap aux Meulles, Iles de la Madeleine It didn’t happen!! Chris was up at 6.00am (I was up at 7.00am!!) breakfast and ready for the off at 9.00am. We were 3rd in the queue!! Then the Captain came on the tannoy and said that because it was a tender Port, the swell and wind were too strong, but it was due to drop down in the morning, so he was going to wait for ½ hr. This was a bit annoying as we had a car booked, ready to explore the island, and it was a lovely sunny day!! He came back on at 9.30am and said the wind and swell were still too strong, so he said he would wait for another 1hour. At ½ 10 he came back on and said ... read more

NOTE TO ALL: I am so sorry but I am having technical problems with my travelblog website. I can't upload photos so here is my first travel blog with only 1 photo. I will try another website and let you know if I continue with my travelblog. I may just do a couple of posts along the trip on Facebook. Once again - Sooo Sorry! Fort Lauderdale… or Wilton Manors actually! After a 24-hour grueling flight from Nanaimo to Fort Lauderdale, we arrived safely and exhausted into the Fort Lauderdale airport! An 8-hour layover in Vancouver was followed with a 3-hour layover in Toronto! But there was a bright moment as we saw a stunning sunrise as we raced through Toronto airport trying to get through US customs in time! We needed that 3 hour layover ... read more

Toronto was only one day of our two week itinerary, and our time was largely spent in its museums and restaurants. We started our day at the Royal Ontario Museum, the largest and most visited museum in Canada with exhibits of art, Canadian and world culture, and natural history, including dinosaurs! The ROM demanded a full day on its own but then we wouldn’t have been able to visit the Art Gallery of Ontario, the second largest art museum in Toronto, with outstanding works by Canadian, First Nations and Inuit artists, among others. A particular revelation was the artwork from the Group of Seven, once known as the Algonquin School, a group of Canadian landscape painters from 1920 to 1933. I didn’t understand Canadian art until my fourth trip to the country when I finally visited ... read more

I have just been inspired by a fellow travelblogger to write my own Intermezzo of what we have been up to since my last blog about my trip to Scotland and Sweden in search of ancestors. This year my plans to visit Eastern Europe and complete my travels to 100 countries was postponed to address health issues and to be with family rather than ancestors. Right after I returned from Scotland and Sweden, Linda had operations for Stage 1 breast cancer. She finished her radiation treatments by Christmas. She has follow up appointments to make sure nothing returns. Her prognosis is excellent. In December 2022 Linda and I celebrated our 50th Anniversary with Rosanna, Evan, Connor and Logan, who also were with us through Christmas. Then we were visited by a Momma Bear and her cub ... read more

Montreal is another amazing city with excellent museums, parks and restaurants. The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts was wonderful and the Botanical Garden and Biodome are worth a visit even through they are a bit further afield (although still just a few train stops away). Definitely take a stroll through Jean Talon Market and visit the surrounding shops for edible souvenirs. There is decent Malaysian food at Satay Brothers. Nightlife includes speakeasy locations such as Le 4ᶱ Mur and the Cloakroom Bar, and the Upstairs Jazz Bar & Grill should be on your list as well depending on the performance schedule while you're in town. I would definitely recommend staying in Vieux-Montreal, and there are some excellent (if pricey) restaurants and shops in this elegant neighborhood. Auberge Alternative de Vieux-Montreal is a decent place to stay ... read more

So Arsenal beat Manchester City 1-0. It was brilliant! The Fleet Street Pub gunners are as ardent a group of fans as the George & Dragon’s in Seattle. Thank you Don and Matt for sharing your table with us. This country is beautiful. The land, the water ways, the food, the music. Our cities, towns and villages; museums, libraries, schools, grocery stores, restaurants, sport stadiums, shopping, dog parks, cinemas, theatres, people parks, historic sites, hospitals, laundromats, public utilities, community centers and churches et al. Then the farms, universities, stunning vistas, ski slopes, airports, train stations, bus depots, beaches, amusement parks, military bases, cement works, campgrounds, weather warning systems and even more historic sites. The people who live, love and work in these places are you and me. I am so enjoying recognizing the things I have ... read more

Leaving Blackberry National forest campsite we headed back to the coast where the weather had brightened up and we had a full sunny day ahead of us. It's great wild camping but you still need to dump and top up with water every few days. After finding a dump and some potable water we were set again to go carry on with our travels. More beaches, lighthouses, stunning scenery and surprises today. We drove through Newport to Yaquina Bay lighthouse and on to Yaquina Head lighthouse and state Park. Yaquina head lighthouse at 93 feet tall the tallest lighthouse continues to cast its light with the original lens in place. We had lunch in the moho overlooking Pebble beach which we descended to via a staircase. Pebble beach is exactly that pebbles. It also has ... read more

What a lovely state park! While here we played the 18-hole disc golf at the park. We hiked the Steamboat trail in the park along the top of the buttes with beautiful views. We drove out to Toadstool Geologic Park in the Oglala National Grassland and hiked a loop trail. We also enjoyed the Nebraska state sandwich, a Runza. A runza is a yeast dough bread pocket with a filling consisting of beef, cabbage or sauerkraut, onions, and seasonings. The Museum of the Fur Trade was also very interesting and educational regarding the fur trade in the frontier from 1795 to 1870. So many displays and items from the time of the English, French, and Native Americans.... read more
