This place has plenty of beautiful overlooks! This park is only 2 hours from home, and offers hours of never riding the same trail twice. Long, painful uphills are rewarded with minimum 10 min downhills--as dicey as you want to make it! I love singletrack where you're between mtn and air... and yet somehow you feel sqeezed ;) Douthat is a perfect weekend camping destination. On a hot summer trip, there is even a lake to cool off post-ride. Unfortunately, this particular trip was a short drive-by on our way home from visiting in Charlottesville, VA. You can tell because we are hardly sweating in these photos! Next time I'll have shots from the Middle Mtn overlooks which are even better! ... read more

The forecast for today was 80 degrees plus and clear skies - a perfect day to take our new Wilderness Systems Kayak for a cruise. We bought a Tarpon model 130T, it's a tandem for double the fun. Originally, my brother-in-law Hugh and his lovely wife Nicolette were to join us as they too have recently bought kayaks. The call came early this morning, it was Nicolette, Hugh was not feeling well and they would have to cancel. The kayak was loaded onto the car the night before so we headed out for Lake Clementine ourselves. Lake Clementine is only 15 minutes from our house - I just hate those long drives to recreate. After arriving at the lake, we paddled for a couple hours before finding a secluded cove for lunch. We were enjoying our ... read more

A truly great event for people who love to look at old machinery and equipment. I saw a rare John Deere Car built by the great farm equipment company John Deere that sold at farm equipment dealership. I also observed an old one room school in operation. Corporal punishment and the school dunce were acted out. A unique demonstration of anvil shooting. Anvil shooting has a long tradition, beginning in colonial days in small settlements that didn't have a church bell or cannon. When the people needed to be called together the local blacksmith would shoot his anvil off and the people would hear it for miles around. One story dates anvil shooting back to the days of Davy Crockett, when anvils were shot in celebration of his election to Congress. ... read more

Hello Everyone Sorry it has taken so long to send out another update, but here it is, and after a few comments, I will make it shorter than the last..ok not really. When I last wrote we had arrived in San Diego to hang with our friends Forest and Erin. We had a great time and did some Geocaching in Balboa Park and visited the San Diego Art Museum. On Wednesday morning (September 21) we headed over to the Phoenix/Tempe area to meet up with our friends Michael and Zaida. In AZ we did a lot of hanging out with our friends, swimming, eating, went to a Diamond Backs baseball game where they renamed the stadium, and did a lot of relaxing. We visited a dueling piano bar name the Big Bang and had a great ... read more

Every October, when the third weekend of the month rolls around, Hood River County celebrates its harvest bounty of apples and pears. Each year as the Hood River Valley Harvest Festival has grown larger, smaller events have also sprung up to entice visitors to journey off the beaten path and explore the surrounding orchards at the base of Mt. Hood. The harvest festival is the perfect catalyst for setting out on a day-long driving trip. Exit 64 along I-84 east will deposit you at the festival grounds. After enjoying the handmade crafts and purchasing a bag or two of local fruit, you can follow what is known as the Hood River Fruit Loop. This jaunt will take you through the rural communities of Odell, Parkdale, and Pine Grove. While your objective may be to handpick some ... read more

I am home now, but for the sake of completion I'll add these blogs on. Internet access got very expensive from LA onwards so no chance to update. After leaving Texas, we flew to Albuquerque. Had an uncomfortable flight as we sat next to a fellow who was quite large and took up his square mile of space. When we landed, we picked up our car we took a left hand turn out of Albuquerque, unlike as infamously told by Bugs Bunny, and drove towards the Grand Canyon with a stop at a Hope Native American casino for some $2 blackjack. It's interesting going to a dry casino, no alcohol allowed seeing it's on native lands, so you get offered HEAPS of Pepsi. We made it about 1/2 way to the Grand Canyon that day as ... read more

Ok this is gonna be real short, only because i lost my camera and am kinda sour about the fact i have no pictures to document this lovely story. We had organised to stay with these gold people from camp, Venus, Ray and their adorable young lads Josh and Ryan, so we knew once that had been planned this was gonna to be no relaxing time to catch up on much need sleep from raging around Central America. Venus picked us up from the airport as soon as we got there in her best outfit that she had, i personally think she went to the trouble of buying new threads for our arrival. I never really knew how much they wanted us at their place untill she reavealed that she had driven 2 hours to come ... read more

We arrived in LA on Columbus day morning at 5.30am and took the 'Supershuttle' to our hostel in Hollywood. We saw the sunrise on the famous Hollywood sign on the way. On our first evening we walked along Hollywood Boulevard to the premiere of a new film called "North Country" at the famous Chinese Theatre. We hoped to see some stars and were not disappointed as both oscar-winner Charlize Theron and Leeds-armoury-advertising Sean Bean turned up! North Country Premiere The next day we went to Venice Beach, saw the (very small) "Muscle Beach" but no-one was working out (all the bodybuilders probably got scared when they saw Tim) and then walked along the 'Ocean Front Walk' to Santa Monica beach. We watched pelicans fishing in the the Pacific ocean, visited the famous pier and then headed ... read more
