8:45PM Biloxi is a mess, though I heard it was worse before. We got down here about 3:30AM last night. There are about 110-120 of us. We are all sleeping under a huge red and white tent (picture a circus tent) provided by the Salvation Army. Lights are strung from pole to pole, but right now they're watching a movie (projected against the canvas), so I'm writing this near the well-lit entrance. We're in a place called Yankie Stadium, an old football field that the Salvation Army has leased to make part of its headquarters. The top of the bleachers are torn up. The press box is gone. We're sleeping on the grass. We woke up at about 7AM. A trailer acts as the canteen. Coffee (non-dairy powdered creamer, two sugars), Pop Tarts, a banana, juice ... read more

Hello All, Thanks for resending the blog stuff. I somehow misplaced it. Anyways... California is great! Being from Boston I am NOT used to this perfect weather every single day. Its almost frustrating. My work is about a 45 minute walk from where Aaron and I are living so they gave me a bus pass. But on nice mornings I say to myself "self, today is a nice day, I think I'll walk". So I have pretty much been late to work everyday since it is always nice and I never take the bus. Work is great and is usually entertaining to say the least. If you forgot, I am working at a shelter for homeless families. They stay for 6 months at a time so pretty much make the shelter their home for that time. ... read more

(Near Atlanta, GA) Here are our landmarks: increased traffic, lit-up billboards, the passing time. The things I carry: sleeping bag, a Spanish play, a memoir, wallet, pillow, sweatshirt, old jeans just bought at the Salvation Army store, t-shirts, gloves, thick rubber boots, towel, flip-flops, bathing necessities. The people I'm with: Rachel (my roommate), Rose (from Ireland), Tamara (from Cocktails, my a cappella group), Tom (my Methodist minister and a campus chaplain), and 108 (or so) other USC students neatly packed into two charter buses. We're going to Biloxi, Mississippi. Hurricane Katrina hit weeks ago, tearing Biloxi to pieces, overrunning New Orleans (and much of the Gulf Coast) with mud, muck, and water. A madhouse. We saw the images on CNN, Fox News, Time magazine, internet sites. Looting. Dying. People stranded on houses. Stuck in the Superdome. ... read more

Our final stop in the US, mostly for the purpose of catching the plane to Sydney. We stayed in a Hostel called the 'Cotel' on Venice Beach. The location was good but the Hostel was bad with it's dodgy plumbing banging all night and keeping us awake. To recover from the nights we took it pretty easy in LA lying on the beach, sitting in cafes in Santa Monica and occasionally making the effort to actually do something like go roller blading along the sea front with the beautiful people. Sara was very pleased with herself being the better skater. We met up with Adam ( ex colleague ) a couple of times who was out there working on a Sony Pictures motion capture shoot. We took a quick tour of the studio and saw my ... read more

I just got back from New York, NY, visiting my best friend Jake and his girlfriend Liz. They live in the lower west side of Manhattan, right near NYU and Soho...Their apartment is 2x as big as my Jeep Cherokee and, needless to say, we were a bit cramp. But being so close to each other brought some great times. Jake works for a music television station called Fuse and is somewhat handy with a video camera. After compiling all his footage from our graduation roadtrip a couple summers ago, he made this amazing "movie" (and its a real movie!) of all of us throughout those amazing 16 days. It turned out so great. Copies will be made available at the producers discretion. This was my 3rd time to NYC so we definitely didn't do the ... read more

first entry as a blogger - sure to be rough with hopes of smoothing it out as i learn. for instance, haven't found spell check. 44 pounds only allowed to be checked - one bag. boy do we get spoiled traveling in the U.S. picture me stark naked (referred hereafter as S.N.), on second thought, don't, on the scale weighing myself and my books for the trip = 6 pounds and i have more. 44-6= 38 pounds. picture me again S.N and holding my 25 inch piece of luggage containing clothes and pharmaceuticals = 32 pounds. 38 pounds-32 = 6 pounds left. also have to factor in getting out of China and added weight of souvenirs. flying China Eastern over and back from L.A. so rules are strict. carry on even gets weighed 12 pounds. yipes, ... read more

Well, we're back in the USA. It is obviously growing on us because as we crossed the border we almost experienced a “back home” feeling. Once again we had a very pleasant customs officer and it all went very smoothly. Having crossed the border into Montana we headed to Glacier national park. It is illegal to take a vehicle longer than 28ft through the park so we took a tour on the “going to the sun” road in a very individual vehicle during which you cross the “continental divide”. It is at this point the rivers run either east or west into the oceans. We also saw the wonderful valleys and peaks carved out by glaciers We then headed of to Missoula. They call this “big sky country” and you can see why. After mountains, ... read more

(Written on: Sunday, September 5, 2005, and Monday, October 10, 2005) It is seemingly unfathomable that over two weeks have now passed since I returned home to Chicago. My adventures abroad feel like they were a figment of my imagination, although I know I was there.... As my flight departed from Hong Kong I made some notes: My attempts to make my final blog entry were thwarted several times over; perhaps destiny decided my time was better spent exploring the many facets of Hong Kong rather than at a computer. First encounters can leave a lasting impression and for Hong Kong this was no exception. Immediately I was amazed by the cleanliness and sense of order found at every turn throughout the city. The train from the airport was carpeted with TV screens on the back ... read more
