An adventure in moving without U-haul!! Here we are in Memphis moving Wade back home. He is finished at MSOP. Wade had packed quite a bit of his stuff but there was still lots to sort through compounded by two other roommates and quite a bit of inherited stuff from previous occupants. We had lots of fun singing and packing and cleaning with all eight children together. Emily and Lydia fresh back, from Jamaica had lots of stories to tell. Many friends stopped in to offer encouragement and advice. Sunday night after Wade received his prized diploma we partied with friends and family on ice cream and cake. Got away Monday morning at 11:30-- within the time limit we had set for ourselves. The van seemed to be riding pretty rough so we had to ... read more

I had a phone call and an email from Brian a few days ago. They were well and in Anchorage after four days hiking in the Valdez area. Brian had found a 1904 gold coin from the gold rush days in Alaska! Quite a special find. Apparently it is worth about US$900! A lovely momento of their adventure... and not something he was thinking of selling! They were packing off and heading up to Denali State Park, north of Anchorage. There they were planning to do the Troubsome creek walk which my Lonely Planet Alaska book tells me is named that because of the bears that are along the way! It follows the creek past the "numerous black bears feeding on salmon" up to the treeline and then along a ridge with spectacular views of the ... read more

Days 7-12 (by Iain) So, here's what we've been up to this week; Last weekend was spent in Niagara which was a fantastic little ghost town on the American side of the border and our hostel was run by a crazy wee Chinese woman who couldn't stop helping us. Through several conversations I think her husband (dead or not: I couldn't figure out) was Scottish. Still, the Falls were pretty cool- there's three of them in total and wee had a good wee walk down beside the Niagara River. Whilst there we also met an English couple who gave us free Spaghetti one night and came drinking with us in Toronto. Which is where we went next. Toronto was okay. I guess we didn't know quite what to do despite a lengthy e-mail from Joe about ... read more

Why I'm Here So...here I am two miles from Ensenada, Mexico. (I believe it's about 60 miles south of San Diego on the Pacific coast of Baja California.) This massive ship is anchored in the middle of a bay which is surrounded by Ensenada - apparently we needed to make room for other ships to dock. (Fair enough - we have to be here until Sunday when the students arrive on buses from San Diego.) Life aboard the MV Explorer is pretty amazing. Apparently I don't get seasick which is a huge blessing (it seems to be either seasickness for those who do, or else extreme drowsiness from the medication they use to combat it!) Today is the last day of orientation - it ends in a couple hours, thankfully, and then we'll get down ... read more

since i wrote my last entry, the last few days were more about people than about traveling. we don't really leave camp, and until all the campers arrive we have a pretty busy scheduale of activities for the staff and we're getting to know each other (well a lot of the americans already know each other from previous years, but we obviously don't). so i haven't really started my job, but i have much less free time than i'll have when i'll be "working". most of the americans are nice and try to get to know you, but like i wrote a lot of them already have their friends here and there are times i really do feel the cultural difference (much more than in my birthright trip, for example). an interesting thing is that i ... read more

Hey Guys Finally arrived in Miami after a nice BA flight - popped a couple of Nanas valium and the time passed really quickly! This place is SOOOO cool and wish i had a few extra days to explore and head to the Everglades - anyway. Its steaming hot but raining like mad - they had about 1 foot of water in 15 minutes - so i had to buy myself a pair of flip flops just to wade across the road! Craziest thing so far is the amount of people here who don't speak english - i've heard more Spanish than English. And i've realised how bad my Spanish is..... Anyway off to eat my jumbo hotdog from Jerry's diner and heading out to an Irish pub tonight as been invited by fellow hostellers! ... read more

The Mother Road North America » United States » Oklahoma » Tulsa By Cruzn4PhotosJune 16th 2007How about taking a little visual trip down memory lane with me. I spent the day getting my kicks on Route 66. I started in Tulsa and drove down to Kellyville stopping at the Hickory House Bar-B-Que in Sapulpa for lunch. I then hopped on the turnpike (I-44) and drove northeast to Vinita. From there I got back on the Mother Road and took it back down to Tulsa stopping along the way. The images will tell the story from today. Enjoy! ... read more

So sang Chris Daughtry and I think it's our theme right now. As great as our time away from home has been, there's something about the thought of home that makes us quite anxious to just be there. However, it's not quite that easy when you have ventured 1300 miles away. Did you know that there are approximately 1,842 places to wee as you cross Wyoming diagonally? And we got to know about 47 of them quite well. Ugh! Thursday morning we were to begin the trek homeward starting from the cabin in Jackson, Wy. I got up very early, naturally, and enjoyed a pot of coffee and the peace and quiet of solitude before everyone else woke up. When they started getting up and around and packing to head out I started to notice ... read more

We woke before five a.m. and I ran the boat aground before we’d even left the marina. The learning curve at this point is so steep I keep falling off it. It was a very low tide and our slip was up against the end, near the shore. As we backed out of the slip and pointed our bow toward adventure, the keel went -sigh- into the soft mud. Aground! Twenty seconds later, I had us off the ground and careening toward the main channel out of Los Angeles Harbor. All we needed was a heavy dose of throttle. Which I’m getting used to. Speed is my friend. The sail to Santa Cruz Island was, in hindsight, a brief walk in the park. The seas were completely calm - I baked Oatmeal Peach scones as ... read more
