Catch-up photos from our East Africa Safari North America » United States » New York By WillzJune 15th 2007Kenya SafariHilary and JaneThis is a catch-up entry. We are at Jane's brother's house in Ossining, New York, having spent time in London, and in Kennebunkport, Maine, with Jane's father. We leave for Lima, Peru, next Wednesday. This entry is simply to add a few more images from our safari in Kenya and Tanzania -- mainly because I'm missing the raw beauty of the Masai, the Masai Mara, and the Serengeti. How do I distill over 2,000 photos into just a few that might b... read more

I am happy to report that I got my host family assignment today. I am considering it as a kind of "you finished finals and here is your reward" sign. My host family are Hidalgo Salvador's. My host father's name is Fausto, my host mother's name is Virman, and my host sister's name is Cristina (she is 18). They live in Quito and have a dog. I am really happy that they have a dog because I have wanted a dog for a long time but mom is allergic. Fausto owns his own business (I am not sure what he does). I have their address but when i look for it on a map it is very confusing and I can't seem to find it. I will keep searching and if I find it I will ... read more

June 10th: Boarded the "American Eagle" flight to Los Angeles. Nothing to mention except that we had no complaints. That was the first time I saw LAX & immediately understood that it is as fast paced as the city itself. After a 3 hr walking in the airport, we boarded DL 816 to Anchorage. LA was blanketed in fog. Once the airplane took off, we came out of the fog & there was this Sun as if it was there all the time! For most of the journey, I fell asleep(or at least tried to). Ganesh was immersed in a movie. A sudden turbulence made the seat belt mandatory. Most of us got up, looked down & never went back to sleep at all. 30000 ft below us were these huge glaciers, glacier-carved mountains, hundreds of ... read more

We followed the Great River Road all the way down into Louisiana, stopping at a few interesting (and sometimes peculiar) sights. First, Onward, Mississippi. Onward is a corner store. We actually missed it and had to turn around. There's nothing remarkable on the inside: just chips, candy, beer and the like. But, Onward has a claim to fame. It was here that the story originated of the Teddy Bear. It is fabled that Teddy Roosevelt was hunting here when his hunting party came upon a baby bear. The guide lassooed the bear, but Roosevelt declined on shooting it. The party set him free, and Rossevelt's attidtude toward the bear caused a great many cartoons to be printed about it. Then a stuffed animal company wrote to the president requesting that they be able to name their ... read more

After a very early start (2:30 am),we all arrived at the airport in time for our 6:00 am flight to San Francisco. Our flight was right on time and very comfortable. We had a nice layover at SFO and hung out at the Red Carpet Club, thanks to Cheri's Red Carpet membership card. We then boarded the flight for Hong Kong. Judy and I were lucky enough to get upgraded to business class and Cheri really lucked out -- she was bumped up to first class! Nothing like traveling in style! It certainly made the 14 hour flight much more enjoyable and Cheri certainly looked happy at the end of it. ... read more

Well after a monster day of touring around yesterday, I still had a couple of things I wanted to see before I head off to Vegas. Today I caught the cable car down to the waterfront and walked along the pier to check out the sites, and then catch the ferry over to Alcatraz Island. The pier is always full of people and a really fun place to hang out - there are loads of shops, outdoor bars, and tons of waterfront restaurants to eat the sunny days away (lucky I am leaving today, too much yummy food could be dangerous). After wandering the pier for a couple of hours I headed on over to Alcatraz Island. The island is only a short 10 minute ferry ride away, and I managed to keep my sea ... read more

Normandy Farms Family Campground was our next stop. Located near Boston, the wooded property has been in the same family since the 1760’s and is now also home to a Christmas tree farm. We took a drive to the JFK Presidential Library and Museum on the U. Mass-Boston campus. We were very impressed with the exhibits, photos, and audio/visual presentations of the President and First Lady and their families and would highly recommend a visit. Another day we rode the MBTA (train/subway) into Boston. It was a cloudy, chilly day but we enjoyed the harbor cruise and the Beantown Trolley tour where our driver provided lots of Boston trivia. We walked through Beacon Hill, an area with very expensive homes; and we checked out the Fanueil Hall and Quincy Market areas. After getting off the train, ... read more

This morning each of us had some things to do on their own. The guys made a trip to a nearby Radio Shack to get a few needed items. The gals stayed behind and did some things in the motorhomes and then again visited. When the guys came back, we all spent a laid back afternoon under our friend’s awning, just enjoying watching what was going on in the campground and relaxing. It was interesting to watch as many campers arrived for the weekend and got parked and set up. We decided to put together what we had brought for dinner and cook outside on the grill. This was a particularly relaxing day and the evening continued as we enjoyed each other’s company.... read more

Starting point Nathan D. Bryant Hello family, friends, collogues and others who are interested in my travels. I thought I would make this first entry to provide some background info. For the past 4 years I have taught social studies in Denver Colorado, or since I have graduated college. Much before this time though, I have had a dream of traveling and seeing the world. However, I did not want to simply travel to a place, see the usual tourist spots, then go back home. What I have wanted was a chance to be involved with the culture, come to understand how different parts of the world work and be able to really enjoy what the world has to offer. Very recently, I have just accepted an offer to teach history overseas, in Dubai UAE. Some ... read more
