New York, a place I would never dream of calling home, but that I enjoy visiting every single time! Imagine, my first visit was back in 1995 and I'm pretty sure I've come to the Big Apple way over 20 times. Every visit is special, but the winter ones are more special as long as the weather is on my side! I'm here for 2 nights. Little last minute change of plans as I got invited to stay the first night with friends in New Jersey. First came the uneventful flight from West Palm Beach to Newark. I rented a car and drove in the dark in the wood all the way to near Morristown. Few towns I crossed look gorgeous and those mansions with Christmas decorations are truly special! After a week diving, I was ... read more

Plan A for this winter break: snowshoe in the Sierras. Getting 3 pairs of snowshoes was no problem but the weather was a big wild card. Sure enough, Super El Niño didn’t bring snow in time. Plan B: hit Space museums out of town. Y’s been into all things space but the resources are somewhat limited in the Bay Area. This would be a good chance to expand our reach! Sat: On the road to Paso Robles Before going space mode, winding down at Capaldi Ranch has been our annual. This is our third holiday season visiting the ranch stay in Paso Robles. A pit stop at Gilroy Library worked out perfectly. The holiday event was underway on our way to Paso Robles. Y enjoyed the story time, photo with Santa, and cool crafts. Although we ... read more

So much to celebrate and enjoy during this festive season. In this blog, you will see us celebrating at CELEBRATION (the town that Disney built but does not own anymore), indulging ourselves at a Thanksgiving dinner, enjoying all the friends and places here at Tropical Palms and around, partaking in a glorious Golf Cart Parade…..and much more. Sit back and relax…this may take a while. YAWN! The Town of Celebration is just a hop, skip, and jump from our park. Every Christmas, they decorate their Main Street like a Winter Wonderland. There is an enormous Christmas tree and a skating rink. In the evening, it even snows (soapflakes)! Hey, it's Florida! The entire town looks beautiful as so many residents highly decorate their homes…..some actually hire professional decorators to turn their properties into a beautiful Christmas ... read more

All of us who travel must do the layover, whether we like it or not. Some stops are better than others. My personal favorites are Denver, Chicago, and Phoenix. My least favorites are Dulles, JFK, Hotlanta, and Dallas. Thrillist has a few thoughts on the subject: These are the top five airports for layovers, based on the methodology: 1. San Diego International Airport 2. Logan International Airport 3. Philadelphia International Airport 4. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport 5. Miami International Airport San Diego International Airport came out as the top airport, with 36 restaurants, 41 shopping options, and 13 charging stations per mile. California is also represented by the second spot, with Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport. The airport has fast Wi-Fi, easy navigation, and a stress-free layover, according to the study. Meanwhile, some o... read more

It was a perfect sunny day for a Caddo Native American festival. I arrived and saw that there was large attendance there. The Hasinai tribe of Caddo were very peaceful farmers that arrived there about 700 AD. They started building their three large earthen mounds about 1000 AD and finished about 1250 AD. Around 1300 AD they disappeared. The mound I visited was their burial mound; and the two larger ceremonial mounds were much farther away and I did not walk to or photograph them on this visit. I admire the Caddo, and other Native Americans for living well with nature and not overstressing their environment. The first thing I did was to visit their Visitors Center to see their exhibits and speak with the Caddo people. They did not have a visitors sign in log ... read more

Second stop of this little multi-trip, I'm flying into West Palm Beach for Thanksgiving. I'm actually only posting this after having spent a week on and under the sea out of Palm Beach, but you'll have to wait that I sort out all my pictures for this special blog! USA close all over the place for Thanksgiving. So I was more than happy that landing after 1pm, the hotel shuttle was still operating. I'm staying for my first night in a pretty nice hotel right in the middle of Downtown West Palm Beach. I dropped my bags and embarked for a nice 2-3 hours walk around West as well as actual Palm Beach. Well, this area is truly different from Austin. Let's admit it, it's also one of the most expensive zip code to live in ... read more

For those of you who have never visited the famous Buena Vista Cafe in North Beach/Fisherman's Wharf, this story ought to entertain you. Maybe San Francisco didn’t invent Irish coffee, per se, but the city by the Bay sure popularized this cozy, whipped-creamy, whiskey-spiked coffee drink. The story goes: one November evening in 1952, Pulitzer-Prize-winning travel writer Stanton Delaplane was sitting at the bar of the Buena Vista Café on Hyde Street when the café’s owner, Jack Koeppler, challenged Delaplane to help duplicate the original, which the writer had tasted at Ireland’s Shannon Airport. They tried one concoction after the next, not quite getting it right. Finally, Koeppler returned to Shannon to ask the original inventor, Chef Joe Sheridan, for advice. Eventually, the recipe was perfected. Turns out there are two secrets: The cream needs to ... read more

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! Wishing everyone experiences at least a single moment of Thankfulness on this special day! I often wonder how other people and other countries celebrate today? I have had the opportunity to be on foreign soil multiple years and have been pleasantly surprised by how the world really understands the thankfulness for others. The military missions never stop but there is something so very special about being deployed during the holidays. During the buildup to Operation Desert Storm (November 1990), there were about half of the 500,000 Coalition troops on ground in Saudi Arabia and in my location at the Port of Jubail, we kept Thanksgiving quite simple. President Bush, General Schwarzkopf, and First Lady Barbara Bush showed up in a Marine Corp helicopter! Quite a surprise for a young Soldier who had been ... read more

I'm back on the road for a short three weeks, and not really a short trip for this little pre-Christmas trip. My first stop is one of the hippier places in the States that I haven't visited yet. I spent two days in Austin! Bali to Austin is not a short hop, and this is just the first stop of an interesting trip. I left Bali on a full flight to Taipei before connecting in premium economy to LAX. Eva air seats in premium economy are just a solid bargain that I could become nearly a regular. Point to note, sadly ANA doesn't fly to Bali yet! Food offering was better than last time, but the key here is the seat as the f&b offering is really not impressive. I got my little stop-over in Los ... read more

I'm afraid this blog will be going dormant for a while, hopefully not too long. We were in Quartzsite, AZ for a rally and two days before it started, Natalie had a stroke. She was airlifted to a hospital in Las Vegas and I visited her for a couple days before going back to get the rig. Now we are in Las Vegas and I will be able to visit her every day until she's fully recovered. More soon, I hope.... read more
