After our stay in Santa Rosa, our next stop was a couple hundred miles along a mostly washboard highway, to Grants, New Mexico. Grants was named for three Canadian brothers who owned and operated mines nearby. They wanted a community for themselves and their workers, and they built a nice little town with some quite elegant homes on the nearby hills. We stayed at a really nice little KOA RV park. At first glance, the park seems like a wasteland with a few RV sites and a couple buildings. But this park really is a wonderful place to stay for a little while. The owners and managers have really made an effort to make the park something special. First, and most important, the park is really clean and well maintained, both the RV sites as well ... read more

From CNBC: The most off-putting behaviors According to the report, the most aggravating in-flight behavior is the invasion of personal space — be it encroaching on an armrest, leg room area or crossing the invisible boundary that separates passenger seats. Some 77% of people in the survey said they were "bothered" by it, with 51% saying they were "very bothered." (I hate the seat hog) In second place are unhygienic behaviors, such as clipping fingernails or taking off shoes, according to the survey of more than 2,200 Americans. However, url=https://www.cnbc.com/2023/04/12/should-you-recline-seats-or-remove-shoes-on-flights-it-depends.html?&doc=107327468not everyone objects to removing shoes on flights, with less than half of people in Asia (49%) and just over a third of those in the United Arab Emirates (38%) deeming the practice unacceptable in a YouGov survey p... read more

After Oklahoma City, our next major objective was Quartzsite, Arizona. Because that’s just too far for a single day’s drive and we’ve grown accustomed to driving no more than 3 hours or so, and the number of reasonably decent RV parks on that route is limited, especially with all the snowbirds on the move, we made reservations for five stops enroute: Amarillo, Texas, Santa Rosa and Grants New Mexico, and Holbrook and Flagstaff, Arizona. Our drive from Oklahoma City to Amarillo was long and straight and flat, with a whole lot of very little unusual scenery. The roads were mostly pretty nice, and just amazingly full of semis and their trailers. Of course, we’re not very different when hauling our 37-foot 5th wheel, but can almost always maintain speed when going up hills while many semis ... read more

Have you ever noticed that most other wine regions compare themselves to the Napa Valley? For good reason, Napa Valley wines are still the gold standard. And while these other areas have excellent, even award-winning wines, Napa is the glamor name through the years. Having tasted wine in Europe, South America, Africa, and Australia, I always hear Napa as the "grand" comparison. I much prefer Napa Valley as well, just because of familiarity, and comfort. I know where to go, and what to eat. I have cycled through the Valley since the 70s. I love the vibe, despite the ridiculous prices of both wine and tasting options. Go online, and it is not unusual to find wine tasting options at some Napa wineries over $100!!!!! But best travel buddy, Mike and I were just talking this ... read more

Crazy to think that we have been driving for almost 7 weeks! The plan, such as it is, is to be back in Ocean Shores by the 24th. Avoiding all retail as that is Black Friday. This gives us two days before real life kicks back in. Of course I am armed with determination and all sorts of resolutions. I have already applied to a local college (no changing my mind on that). I have spent weeks of smiling at everyone I meet and being interested and engaged with complete strangers. I need to start learning from the people I see on a regular basis (or not, dear Seattle/Brier/Tacoma friends) and not taking them for granted. I will say that I am surprised by the number of friends and acquaintances I have thought about and missed. ... read more

We all need an escape from our regular routine. Visiting the east coast is a dramatic reset from my everyday routine. Of course, I get spoiled by the generosity and hilarity of my dear friends, Dirty Pat and Mrs. Pat (Renae). The coastal air is clean and cool. The leaves are every shade of brown to orange to red. The ground is moist and soft. The roads in the "village" of Annapolis have no sidewalks, the trees are tall and green. The town is as historic and quaint as possible. Why is the east coast so different than California? Yes, the weather, the landscape, the people? I would say it is the richer, and much longer traditions.Care to argue or discuss? We have made it to Quartzsite, AZ, where we’ll be staying for a month before moving on to Yuma for the Winter. For now, though, we’ll write about our stop in Oklahoma City, where we spent a couple of years courtesy of Boeing, 43 years ago. This is when we met Rinda and Richard, the boys learned to ride their new bicycles, and Natalie was the Popcorn Lady every Friday morning at their school. It was truly a pleasant experience to drive by the old neighborhood, wonder where all the neighbors have scattered and see how the neighborhood has aged. Some was rebuilt after a tornado took out blocks of homes that were near us before, but you really couldn’t tell the old from the rebuilt. And Oklahoma is one of the prime candidates for us ... read more

We have recently returned from an amazing trip to Oahu and Big Island We booked our flights with British Airways from Manchester via Heathrow and Seattle. The aircraft was very comfortable in economy with ample leg room for the long journey and the staff were very attentive and pleasant, however on arrival at Seattle our cases hadn't travelled with us! Our connecting Airline, Alaskan Airways were brilliant. We completed the appropriate paperwork and completed our journey to Oahu. Our final destination was The Luana suites and Apartments. A very Comfortable room with a kitchenette as we knew Hawaii was expensive!... read more

Day one. Oahu sunrise Thanks to our Jet lag we were awake before birds and had booked a Sunrise cruise with Viator, and had booked a taxi with Charlie's Taxi app. The taxi was always on time and reasonable compared to other companies. Our cruise had been cancelled due to lack of customers but we were rebooked on the Sunset cruise the same day. We decided to take a gentle amble along the beach taking in all the sights Honolulu had to offer. The locals were already taking the surf, playing Beach volleyball and jogging! The sun appeared over the Diamond Point crater North of the city. Breakfast was taken at a little restaurant behind the Hilton called Gangnam Style and was showing the video as we took our seats. Don't think we wowed the locals ... read more
