I walked through this city. A city of new erections and old buildings. A city of old erections and lost loves. I rode through the streets to all the old haunts. The parks, the people, the sights, all simply familiar. Memories rolled over me. Smells swept through my mind. Colored leaves fell to the ground in the arboretum. A prairie rustled in the wind. I rolled cigarettes and experienced each moment without thought. It was an ocean of the unconscious, and I was lost at sea. I had spent the weekend reliving the past. Football and beer and costumes and friends. The constant excess wore me down. By Sunday, I was filled with dread and fear and desolation. For 2 days, I awoke each morning with shaky hands and banging headaches. I was destitute and ... read more

The trip from Minnesota to Janesville WI included getting lost with the world's slowest-minded human being. A little absent sometimes, if you will. Take Baccary, add 20 pounds of muscle, 3 more inches in height and 10 pounds of chest hair and you have Patrick trying to drive a huge SUV with 4 boats trailered to the back of it. I couldn't talk to him becuase talking was too distracting for him. Also the same reason he didn't use windsheild wipers. Too distracting. So far my stay with Katherine's Aunt and Uncle has been heaven. They all have work in the morning through till the afternoon, so I have been able to sleep in, shower, do my 20 minute work-out, puppy sit for their giant 10 month old Great Dane, and channel surf through their giant ... read more

Yesterday night, I pick up a load going to Hermiston, Oregon, headed afterward (empty) to Portland, OR. The load came off a customer two or three blocks down the road from the customer I delivered the previous load. That was a first for me. As was been in Minnesota. Now, most of the pictures I got are on video tape, so I will probably add them later as I edit the video. I ran out of batteries for the camera (still camera) and kept on going with the video. I wanted to get home... :) So, for now, all I give you is the route I took. See you down the road... ... read more

Finally, I delivered the load at De Pere, WI, south of Green Bay. Beautiful area. Never been here bofore. I had to drive straight through the middle of Chicago, which is never fun. I really don't like driving an 18 wheeler on that city. I do anything to stay away from it! But, good news is that I got my assignment of load headed to Oregon finally, so... " mama, mama I'm going hooooooome..." oops, another song... they keep chasing me!... read more

I've been testing Aerobeds, guest bedrooms, and the hospitality of friends and family across the US. Sarah and her husband Matt put me up in Elgin, Illinois. Sarah, a new mom to Ava, just over 4 months, amazed me by staying up until 1:30 AM. We discussed eccentricities of our parents and wondered what our futures hold for similar habits. As a kid I was accustomed to hopping out of the car to grab abandoned bungee cords along the road that my dad would spot while driving. He accrued quite the collection. Close friends of mine could probably list my strange hang-ups... test yourselves by listing them in your head now (pens, frames, paper-creasing... go ahead, add to the list). At Sarah and Matt's house I bedded down in the company of the friendly critters pictured ... read more

Pictured in approximately 1989 I was a freshman in high school having a sleepover at my friend Sara's house. To my side is my friend Maggie. A few weeks ago I was camped on that same red bed in LaCrosse, WI. This time, Sara's 5 year old son Ethan had to give up his room for the week. He very generously did. Though the room was missing the very trendy red and black color combo and Christmas lights woven through the bed frame, I enjoyed what Ethan had done with the place. His door was a perfect spot to display some stickers, haphazardly placed. He also used Scotch tape to prominently display a penny. My personal favorite, and sure to tug at any mom's heartstrings, was a small one inch by one inch proof of Sara ... read more

We pulled into the Wisconsin Dells in time to get the RV ready and dinner cooking. We were a little disappointed in the campground as I was going for scenic and got a cross between Myrtle Beach and Coney Island. It is a ways out of town which was the plan as I thought it would be quieter; I did not count on I-90 and the train that run right by it. We ate dinner and then the kids played in the pool. We are close to it and one of the benefits we did find was that we could relax by the RV and they could swim. This gave us a needed break and we just sat outside and mellowed. It is actually pretty warm and humid here, surprisingly so. After an afternoon thunderstorm it ... read more

What happened here last night? As I woke this morning and entered the kitchen I began scanning for evidence. My things were strewn about, an atlas open to a map of South America, my credit card haphazardly stuffed into my wallet, my calendar open to August, the computer fan humming. Is it possible? Could I have purchased an airline ticket in my sleep? After checking my email inbox it was confirmed, not the sleep-purchasing, just that I now owned a ticket to Chile. And then the fuzz started to wear away. Thoughts from the early morning. Who says 2 A.M. is an illogical time to buy a life-changing airline ticket? Life-changing airline tickets are very expensive and best bought at 2 A.M. when the brain cannot compute the damage being done to the savings account. Spurred ... read more

Madison is the capital city of the state of Wisconsin aka the badger state (dont ask?). It is a college town of about 200 000 people so its quite small for a US city. Its really good too, with lots of green areas, bars, restaurants and unusal shops. Its also right between two lakes which make it excellant to spend a few days although you might struggle to spend a week here. The place is really bustling and has a cosmopolitan feel to it in no small part due to the University of Wisconsin. The Uni has its student union on the shores of one of the lakes so we spent one night there drinking cheap pitchers of domestic beer and watching the lake. If you get bored with the bar you can always hire a ... read more
