Leaving in two days for a 3 month trek through Patagonia, I can't stop thinking of little things that still need to be addressed. Have I returned all my library books? What about my taxes? Will Robin kill my plants? Ah heck, none of that will matter in a short time. The most important things to focus on are /which/ 3 t'shirts to bring for this 3 month journey and whether the catfood stove will hold up under Patagonia winds.... read more

WaWaWeeWa!!! It was Sunday the 14th of Janvier. The Sunday I took an 8-hour direct flight from Chicago to Paris. Saturday, I went to bed knowing that i would be waking up around 9:30 at the latest, to ensure that all of the things I had scattered about the house would be packed properly. We would leave by 11:30 I hoped, stopping to pick up a coffee that could leisurely be drank with Chip before I flew out of the country for an indefinite amount of time. I had only one carry-on, a small backpack, and one large-ish backpack, for hiking and traveling purposes. I packed each carefully, because we had a 3-day orientation in Paris and I wouldn't want to be digging through my huge backpack trying to find another sock. After tightly rolling each shirt, ... read more

Rain & Snow, -1c I could rave about how crap the last few days have been or I could take the positive approach. Let’s do that: “only when things are at their worst do you see the best in humanity”. That quote sums up what would seemingly be a simple trip thru the Canadian Rockies… or so I thought. The plan was a good one, get the hell out of Vancouver and make my way towards Toronto so I can earn some cash. I’d travel via a highway that skirts the US/Canada border and avoid the nasty weather I might encounter further north. If the weather was bad I’d dip down into the US and take a less snow-covered highway. I figured it’d take 3 days to reach Chicago where I could relax for a little ... read more

It has been said that you don't realize how much you love someone until they are gone, but this was probably said by someone who has never been away and returned after months. I have never felt such profound love and support from my family and friends as when I returned home. My hope that is that everyone, during their lifetime, is lucky enough to have: 1. A dad who will sneak a pitbull into the baggage claim area of Chicago O'hare airport to see its mommy after being away for 5 months. 2. Employment at an agency that will happily welcome you back and find you a job that fits you perfectly (and pays more than you previously made!), while acting like its you that is doing them the favor. 3. A community of ... read more

Well, we're two weeks and one day away from beginning our travels... School is done, I had my last day at work, and suddenly it is seeming very real and very soon. Despite the lack of homework and work, we have a LOT to do: getting rid of everything we don't need and getting everything we do need. No photos this time--who wants to see photos of dreary Madison in a snow-less winter? But I promise the next entry will be a lot more exciting... and from a lot farther away! ... read more

The afternoon of Sunday, December 17th was unseasonably warm in Green Bay and made for an excellent day as the Packers played host to the Lions. Unfortunately for me, the Packers ended up defeating the Lions in this game. I always cheer against the Packers, being from Minnesota and a Vikings fan. Following the game I could overhear countless conversations, all relating to speculation of Brett Favre's possible retirement following this season. Personally I really don't care at all whether Brett Favre retires or not. I was just happy to spend the afternoon outdoors watching the game. The worst part about living in Milwaukee and going to Packer's games in Green Bay is that fact that Milwaukee is not far enough from Green Bay to justify an overnight stay in a hotel, but it is far ... read more

It has been almost a week since I returned to the Midwest after 3 years living and working in London. It hasn't been long, but already it seems like ages ago I was wandering around Covent Garden, Shoreditch, Holborn, the West End, frantically squeezing all my worldly possesions into impossibly small suitcases. The process of sifting thru your entire contemporary life, deciding what stays and what goes, really does your head in. You flash back to all the other times you've done it before; do you keep the shirt you bought in Morocco all those years ago that you've never worn, but which is a beautifully crafted reminder of those 3 days in Tangiers so many years ago...? Nope, that one went to Oxfam. You've got to be a bit brutal in the end. Here I ... read more

Yesterday, Chip and I went to the French Consulate in Chicago to get my visa. I figured now that I have an official visa, I am therefore official! I'm going to France!!! A couple funny things happened in Chicago, including a 3-block sprint to ensure I wasn't late for my meeting, the wrong elevator, no bank statement or letter from my parents, and an incensed couple screaming at each other in the office across from the Visa one. Chip also tripped and fell on an escalator with his hands in his pockets so he had no way to catch himself. After getting my visa, we thought we'd get sort of a headstart on Christmas Presents and walked down the Magnificent Mile where we were completely unsuccessful. We also tried to find The Melting Pot, a delicious ... read more

The final countdown is on!! I've had a chance to get some perspective over thanksgiving and decided to drop a class (environmental science) to only have 12 credits instead of 15. This will be easier on me and will let me be able to travel without too much worry. This will probably make me stay another semester here at ec which I have no problem with. Anyways, I'm very very very excited to leave. It'll be super scary, but a welcomed scary... Anyways...adios!... read more
