Hello everyone, I've been wanting to add a new entry to this pre-trip blog, but have been patiently (as o menos) waiting for that muse to make her random and oh so unpredictable appearance. As I am wont to feel and believe, the only thing permanent is change; as such, there are a couple salient details to update you on. My experience with hiking is limited to a number of dayhikes, and the tallest 'mountain' I've summited is Mt Eleanor at approx 6,000ft. As such, both with requisite humility born of multiple errors and a realistic perspective, I've been adjusting my trip to fit what I'm hoping is a doable itinerary. With my previous global travels, I've taken much joy in pre-trip planning. Having always loved maps, it's fun to look, plot, imagine and wonder what ... read more

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. Thoreau The next chapter of this surreal trip that is my life is about to commence. Why would someone choose to take half a year of their lives to spend on a 2,665 trail that includes three states and Canada? I would imagine the reasons are as varied as the ecosystems one passes thru on such a journey. For me, I need a 'life reset'. The choices and decisions I have made over the years have not worked in such a way as to manifest a happy and peaceful existenceAs such, I'm ... read more

As most of you remember, last year when we did our first snowbirding adventure (Snowbirding 101), it was done quite differently than what you see this year. We travelled for our 15 weeks with a 27 1/2 foot trailer behind our pickup. Susie didn't care for trailer living for such a long time, and I didn't like being responsible for a combined length of 47+ feet wherever we went. So this year we are travelling "liteweight" and staying in motels while on the road, and apartments and condos when settled in for a period of time. The savings in gas costs should make up for the higher "rent" costs......at least that's the plan. This year our plan is to take about 3 1/2 weeks to wind our way down to the southern tip of Texas. We ... read more

Although I planned on making the last entry my final one prior to departing, the conditions in Thailand currently have compelled me to make serious revisions in the upcoming itinerary. BBC news reports that major flooding in and around Bangkok have forced thousands to flee the capital. While Bangkok itself is not as severly affected by the torrential rains and concomitant flooding, the outlying areas are severely compromised. As such, I just purchased a ticket to fly out of Bangkok into Phnom Penh four hours after arriving into Thailand. I debated the sagacity of spending funds on going to visit Angkor Wat, but upon serious introspection, I would profoundly regret not going, being that geographically close to a place I have wanted to see since I first saw photos twenty yrs ago. So as of today, ... read more

Because of my former fulltime job, my traveling was limited to the number of vacation hours that I had during the year. As most of you know from following my blog there is one destination that I would spend my precious vacation hours at, leaving no time to visit anywhere else. Now that I have switched careers and am writing, I can now visit and write about a larger range of destinations. At the end of June I was lucky enough to take my first road trip and headed to Western Washington. Today was spent driving to our destination and took us about 6 hours to get from Lewiston, Idaho to Olympia, Washington. Of course, there were stops along the way as I wanted to enjoy the sights and with a road trip getting there is ... read more

June 1, 2011 For future planning, I thought I might list the various sources used in preparing for my Italy trip. One Stop Shopping By far, the biggest resource was the Rick Steves travel company. I don’t want to sound like an advertising agency, but the Edmonds location really was one stop shopping. Travel classes, travel consultation, train ticket office, books, travel gear, TV shows, travel library. And on the website there was even more, like free audio tours for iPods, sample tour itineraries, the graffiti wall, and “tips and tricks.” Most of all, I liked that the company was not concerned about pressuring visitors to sign up for a tour. Their philosophy is that they simply want people to go to Europe, whether it’s with a tour or not. Recommended Reading I ended up buying ... read more

Hey All...Sorry for the delayed update. We promised to keep in touch so here goes. Sonja wants to share some great photos from a pre-move trip she made to this area last fall. (You can see some of the foliage turning colors.) These awesome photos are of Sonja and friends kayaking in Puget Sound just off the state capital grounds. She took some amazing underwater shots of some marine life in the sound. I'm thinking that she should be a photojournalist for National Geographic. Sonja and Sam are getting ready to go kayaking this spring now that the weather has started to warm up! We also wanted to share with you one of our favorite spots to go and have a glass of wine, Falls Terrace Restaurant. This restaurant was voted one of the two ... read more
