Although we are not due to arrive here until Saturday 6 September here we are already thinking about the weather. Being English l suppose it is part of out cultural preoccupation. Anyway, following media reports, we have been monitoring the current Hurricane season over the Americas. So what do we find - on our planned time of 16.00 EDT in Virginia - a probable collision with a woman called Hanna. And to think we are just leaving home after one of the wettest summers on record in the UK. Never mind can't be helped ... read more

My brother, who is a Master of Arms in the Navy, had been on leave for nearly two weeks, and Kristen and I offer to drive him back down to his base, NAS Oceana, in Virginia Beach, VA. We decide to leave a few days before he is due back and make a short vacation out of the drive. We first drive to the western side of Virginia, in Stuarts Draft, near the Blue Ridge Mountains, to stay the night with our grandfather. The next morning we drive to Williamsburg. Jamie and I had been to this area years ago for a family vacation, and we had all agreed that it was a rather underwhelming experience. Deciding to give it another shot, we check into our hotel and begin wandering the streets. We forgo the admission ... read more

I initially began this entry as a long and ponderous musing upon the meaning of travel, what I discovered/learned, and culture shock. But then I decided that it was too heavy and there wasn't any way that I would ever finish it to my satisfaction to post. So, instead, I will leave you with the final version of my travel photographs, commented so that you'll know a few stories from the last leg of my journey, and a question. Where next?... read more

A good flight through Baltimore to Norfolk. Staying with Dave, Linda, Tommy & Mark in Newport News; home of Christopher Newport. Weather has been pretty good, some rain. Included are pictures from our journey through Colonial Williamsburg & the House of Burgesses. We even got to see the Coopersmith! Perhaps Jamestown tomorrow? Or maybe golf? Thursday I'm off to Washington D.C. As for Greece, I finally made a reservation beyond Athens, I should be spending the next 4 nights on the island of Ios!... read more

Well, geez, how long has it been? Too long! Much has happened in my personal life, but that's not really important. What's REALLY important is that I've planned my next trip. June 30th through July 8th I will be going to Colonial Williamsburg and the surrounding areas. My friend John and I will be driving up from Atlanta and staying about 1/2 a mile from the Williamsburg "compound". We choose 4th of July because we thought there might be lots of fun celebrations and exhibits to attend in the area. I would just like to very publicly thank John and his mother for the opportunity to take this trip. I would not be able to do so were it not for their immense generosity. Also, I would be up a creek without a paddle without the ... read more

We are among those travelers who caught on to TravelBlog through the recent New York Times feature. We are "on the road" bringing our 34 ft. motor home to its "winter home" in Fort Myers, Florida from Mohawk Valley Marina in Schenectady, NY. We are very new to RV-ing and are having fun learning the ropes. Our first night out was spend "dry camping" at a Flying J (truck stop) in Pennsylvania. We have found this to be a very secure, effiicient, and economical way to overnight en route. We are now at an RV park near Williamsburg, VA for two nights. Tonight we had a candle light dinner (absolutely no electric lights) at the Kings Arms in Colonial Williamsburg. The food was wonderful and the service was exceptional. Entertainers in period costume included a young ... read more

With only 6 hours sleep the dogs attacked steve and I at 7 am and from then on the house turned to madness. With 4 kids in the house under the age of 10 wanting to play throw anything we can around the house. Cheryl cooked breakfast today they called Biscuits and Gravy (so the Australia translation to this is some weird sasuage thing chopped up and put in some creamy sauce and biscuits are sortta like scones) it was a fantastic breakfast and everyone loved Cheryl even more after that. We decided that we would go the beach today, so it was about a 30 min drive to the beach, but the beachs here are no where near as nice as the Australian beachs, but they do heat up alot more so the water is ... read more
