Alright now class, let's talk about the founding of Jamestown in 1607. Okay that's good enough. This and Williamsburg are worth a a visit if you like history and all but they are both a bit commercialized. There are a few original buildings but mostly they are reproductions and that is okay but I prefer to see and original if at all possible. One has to keep in mind that things weren't built to last back then and the occassional hurricane as well as other severe weather has taken it's toll. Here a few pictures of both locations and as you can see they do a good job of staying in the period with proper dress. Most of the guides there are very good. We both particulrly liked the guy in the slave shack He was ... read more

So I arrived in Williamsburg and checked into my timeshare. I am staying at the Wyndham Kingsgate. My unit has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a pullout couch, a dining room, and a kitchen, as well as a washer and dryer. I love it. The facility has both an outdoor and indoor heated pool, an outdoor hot tub, a fitness center, a restaurant, and an arcade with unlimited play. It's near a KMart as well, which is convenient. Wyndham has three properties in the area. Governor's Green is the big, new one. Besides Kingsgate, there is also Patriot's Place. I have access to any of them and most of the activities like bingo and such are at Governor's Green. I visited Colonial Williamsburg. The recreation desk sells discounted two day passes, but I opted just to go ... read more

“If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.” President Elect Barack Obama Well, I arrived in Washington on Thursday October 30th. I arrived around 2pm. I unloaded the car and then tried to find somewhere to park the car while I was in town. It took literally and hour of driving around before I found a spot. The parking lots in the area of the hostel do not offer overnight parking. I found one guy willing to keep my car for $15 a day, including the weekend. I just didn’t have access to it after 7pm and the weekend. ... read more

We head south to Virginia to spend a weekend with Seth’s parents and grandmother in Colonial Williamsburg. We intentionally avoid the interstate and so it’s a lovely, scenic drive. Friday night is mostly spent catching up with family. Saturday we start our day at Friendly’s, and I just can’t say that was a good idea. I felt as though we’d gone out of our way to find the slowest and most inept server in the state. But we eventually make it into Colonial Williamsburg, via the Welcome Center buses. We begin delving into 18th century life with a visit to the Governor’s Palace. It was completed in 1772 and is decorated as it would have been just prior to the Revolution. There are 540 weapons on display within the house - quite a collection of rifles ... read more

Okay, so I guess this starts it. I do live in Virginia, but I don't live in Williamsburg. I lvoe going there for the Oktoberfest though, which we are going to this year and I am very excited about it! I love my hometown. We're right near D.C. and it is soooo be-yoo-ti-ful. I am a city girl, if you can't already tell. Shopping, arts, food, culture. I indulge it all through the city. But I plan on going many more places. Well, some planned, some not. I'll just see how far it takes me. I am younger than most people on this website but I'm not going to go off and reveal my age. That's be insane. LOL. The sky right now is pretty gray and rainy, but the light that seeps through the window ... read more

Early Tuesday morning we set out for the historic area around Williamsburg (2.5 hour drive). Although there is a Historic Williamsburg, to enter and tour required a fee ($37 per). So we walked the streets, played tourist, and took photos for free, We also went on the campus of William and Mary (second only to Harvard in age). Light rain fell, but we persisted and finished our street walk and headed to the Yorktown Battlefield. Historic areas are under the National Park Service, so access is free to Golden Eagle Pass holders (old people). We took a driving tour of the battlefield and found the open fields of battle visualizing the two sides standing in lines with muskets loaded as they advanced toward each other waiting for the command to fire. The battlefield areas were ... read more

We awoke to another fine warm day although a little breezy. The weathermen are forecasting rain tomorrow from a low off the Carolina coast but we will head further inland then so maybe it won't be too bad for sightseeing in the open. While we have a big unit at the Super 8 the place was really tired and even though we intend to stay in Williamsburg for another night we will hunt out another motel for tonight. We are now well aware of watching out for things when you enter a recption area and the smell as well.It turned out the Indian lady on the front desk slept in a unit attached to the office and obviously lived all her life in that one room so smells will out......... We headed off for Jamestowne(the Nat Parks site ... read more

Planned another easy day today so late start for a simple breakfast on offer at the Super 8 at Virginia Beach. After watching Regis and Kelly,a show you can get hooked on just to see who they are going to have on and what they are going to talk about,it was time to hit the road.By the way they interviewed the delicious Diane Lane who is starring opposite Richard Gere in Nights at Rodanthe which opens here soon.Must put it on the list as it looks a good movie. The GMA show interviewed Richard Gere beforehand. Headed down to Fort Story where the first English settlement in USA was.Pulled up tot the entry only to find we and the car would be subject to a full searchas we were entering a military base.Hadnt taken that into account when ... read more

After a long discussion over a nice cup of tea in the bar we decided to go ahead and visit Mount Vernon. For those interested they have a website mountvernon.org. Mount Vernon, George and Martha Washington's mansion and farm lies some 2 hours up I95 and close to Washington. Mount Vernon stands as a monument to its builder George and is situated on a commanding hillside overlooking the Potomac River and the low Maryland hills. The hilltop is crowned with trees, alongside the wide sweep of the river. The wooded shores beyond present a view of unchanged beauty. Like Monticello you have plenty of opportunites to take tours of the house, gardens and farm. Not as well organised but Mount Vernon is well worth a visit. Among the many exhibits there they have an orginal key ... read more
