Part of the Historic Triangle of Jamestown and Yorktown, Williamsburg has an endearing personality and oozes colonialism to its fullest. While neither the most vivacious nor the most breathtaking, it makes up in history for what it lacks in superlatives. This place played an integral part of our nation's development and was Virginia's first capital, before it was relocated to Richmond where Kristina and I currently attend school. Williamsburg is a short 50-minute drive east of Richmond, providing a quick reprieve from the city hustle to a serene community that transcends time. A large effort was put forth in the early 1900's to conserve the unique aura of this city, even prompting John D. Rockefeller, Jr. to finance the construction of Colonial Williamsburg, which is now the most popular tourist attraction in Virginia. This and Merchant ... read more

Saturday morning and it was time to leave DC. It was nice to stay in the one spot for a while, but the south was calling. I headed into Virginia. I hit some heavy traffic as I left the expressway to get fuel (or gas as they call it here) but overall it was a pretty smooth run to my first destination – Fredericksburg. Once again, I was diverting from the Revolutionary War into the Civil War. In the area around Fredericksburg there were 4 major battles fought during the Civil War, so I had decided to spend the day looking around. My first stop was the Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitors Centre. Again, the battlefield is a national park, and the visitors centre featured a small museum and a short film narrated by James Earl Jones. I ... read more

Washington to Colonial Williamsburg. After our previous laundry mis-adventure, I was determined to get my laundry done so I could once again start wearing clean clothes. We found one, made the ultimate mistake of not asking how much and the bill came to USD$50!! We were not amused. I took the train out to the airport to pick up our rental car. Everything was going to plan right up until I had to drive back into Washington but the road I was on turned into a motorway and I didn’t know what exit to get off. To make matters worse, when I did get off, lots of the streets are one-way which isn’t helpful when you are driving in the opposite direction from where you want to go on the wrong side of the road (from ... read more

Sometimes History can be rough. Today (Thursday) we started out early in muggy, foggy, and hot Philadelphia to make our time for a guided tour of Historic Philadelphia. So here we go deep into history and those uneven, brick, and cobblestone streets. I mean deep and SMACK in the face. See Max trying to walk on uneven streets, See Max trip, See Max fall down onto the cobblestones of historic Philadelphia. See the very nice street person try to explain to Max as she rights herself, with the help of her husband and a kind stranger, that the streets are old and "not, you know, flat" and you have to watch your step. It would have been very, very funny except my dignity, knee, arm, shoulder, and neck were starting to throb. Especially my dignity. But, ... read more

Well, we made it to our next destination! Dad and Annie joined us last night just before midnight. We took a ride after breakfast today up through the first few miles of Skyline Drive while Benj stayed back and took care of the camper. We left around 9:30 and got to the campground in Williamsburg around lunch. Just as we got the camper leveled, the rest of the family pulled it. What a surprise! We spend the afternoon trying to cool off and hanging around the pool and camper. Visited Aunt Florence this evening and enjoyed dinner at her place. When we got back to the camper, we found that it was a pleasant 78 degrees...much better than the 88 when we pulled in. I think the outside temp actually reached 107 today. Headed to watch ... read more

Monday, May 24, 2010 - Appomattox, Richmond Another grey morning but somehow emblematic of Appomattox - it was a grey, rainy day on which the famous surrender occurred. It is a small restored spot, out of the way, famous only for what ended there. We meet a couple of enthusiastic rangers who engage us in 15 minutes of Civil War minutiae, e.g. exactly which regiment was where, and it’s fascinating to watch grown men with such passions. You get a sense of the sadness and pathos of the ending to what both sides saw as a great, patriotic endeavor…and relief that the war was finally over. In Richmond, at the Museum of the Civil War (a true monstrosity of 1960’s brutalist architecture), it is amazing to see the carefully preserved artifacts…the coat Lee wore at Appomattox, ... read more

Day 29. We went to the Busch Garden Water Park. No photos as the camera battery finally died. I can't find the charger in the car but Mary will be with us on the 30th with her nice camera so we will continue to have updates and photos while we visit Washington DC. But do check the video attached. The campgrounds we are at in Williamsburg is an RV park and located between a highway and ACTIVE train track. We have coal trains going by our tent (within 20 feet) 3 times a night. Makes for interesting stay.... read more
