From Salt Lake City we headed southwest with plans to visit three Utah national parks: Capitol Reef, Bryce and Zion. They are all about rocks in different shapes, sizes and colors. Southwestern Utah has the nickname Color Country, and that is not in vain. Already before reaching the first national Park, Capitol Reef, we started seeing orange and red rocky hills coloring the scenery. Our first stop, Capitol Reef National Park, was the most peaceful of the three. We set up our camp again at the bargain price of 10 dollars a night for a tent site, then set off to see what the park had to offer. The park has several orchards where visitors can freely pick fruit to eat. Being hungry, we started by sampling peaches, apples and pears. The fruit were not really ... read more

Another early am departure had us on the road to Zion this morning, about a 5-hour trip, maybe a little longer with stops. Zion marks the first of three relatively close national parks - Zion, Bryce and Arches - that we know the least about. So we weren't sure what to expect as we headed northwest back into Utah. We managed to stumble upon an unexpected National Park - Glen Canyon Recreation Area. It's another dam built near Lake Powell. We took a quick look around and picked up a bonus stamp and hiking badge. The day was rainy and gray, so we didn't go exploring very much. We piled back in the RV and continued down the two-lane highway. More than once we commented just how authentic the scenery in the movie Cars is compared ... read more

Nous avons parcouru 223 miles = 358,81 kms... read more

We managed to drag ourselves to the hotel, shower and FALL into bed. Our plan was to get up when we got up and go into the Park and do some hiking. Dave/Dan was quick to offer his advice on what we should do, not that we had conquered the repelling and were obviously talented at being let down into a crevace on a rope that had a tencil strength that we now know could have pulled the titanic out of the ocean. However, 7 am came, and the lights came on and we were up and heading out. We have met some wonderful people on this trip already. Some from several continents and all eager to share what they did and how it was with us. Angels Landing seemed to be the place that we ... read more

We know you all have a certain expectation of what crazy thing are we going to do next, or where we are going next, so this year Anthony plan our vacation to a WARMER destination than our last years week in the back country of Montana, where we wore all of our clothes the entire week to keep warm. After all we don't want to let you down. So we headed to Utah - Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon. Bordered by Las Vegas 3 hours one way and Salt Lake City 3 hours the other way. Warmer? We awoke yesterday morning to 38 degree temps - and me without the first boggin, gloves, earmuffs or parka! However, after putting on what I did have and managing to get something to eat we found that it ... read more

We are impressed with the scenery in Zion National Park. Weeping rock really appears to weep due to water migrating through sandstone and shale until seeping out on the surface. The Temple of Sinawava was named for the Coyote-spirit of the Paiute Indians and hosts small wildlife such as birds, frogs, gophers, and lizards. We hiked along the Virgin River to the spectacular Zion Narrows gorge viewing towering vertical rock sides of the canyon. The Narrows were carved by the river in ancient times and are today characterized by soaring walls, sandstone grottos, natural springs, and hanging gardens. This hike gave us the feeling of being inside a "slot canyon".... read more

Day 8 was just a travel day. Mi Hyon once again drove a couple hours while I took a 30 minute nap, that always helps me stay sharp when driving and ready for the Garmin to mess us up! For the second time this trip, our Garmin GPS sent us off course. This time it was fairly easy to tell that it was wrong, since it wanted us to drive up a dirt mountain pass. The local Deputy showed up to ask if we were lost and let me know it would be a really bad idea to drive up the mountain pass w/ an RV...I thanked him for the advice, but kind of knew that anyway. Of course there was no where to turn around and I can't back up with a car attached. So ... read more

WOW! This is our second visit to Zion National Park, the last time we were here, probably in the 1990's, we were able to tour the entire park at our own discretion. This time, we needed to park our car at the Visitor's Center and take a shuttle throughout the valley. You could get off the shuttle at any per-determined stop, and walk or hike a trail. While you lose the freedom to drive throughout the Valley, the bus driver serves as a tour guide pointing out interesting spots that you can visit. We took the shuttle to the end of the run, then walked a hiking trail to the trailhead of the river gorge. We talked with a couple hikers who walked the river trail. They had on dry suits covering their entire bodies, and ... read more

There is a strange atmospheric anomaly at work in Zion. Perhaps it is because your body is so close to the soaring red sandstone cliffs, their edges traced by the undulating flight patterns of Condors. Maybe it’s the icy stillness that permeates every corner in the early morning chill before the sun climbs above the tallest peaks and sets the wind to work. Then again it could be the soft constant sound of the river that courses over the gravel at the canyon’s bottom. Whatever it is, the results are always the same. Your tear ducts will spontaneously seep and the clean cold air will catch in your throat leaving you unable to speak. And so there you stand, looking and feeling yourself opening outward to fill the universe before you. Zion. While the Grand Canyon ... read more
