It was an awesome few days in Vegas but today was time to leave the city lights to explore some of the nearby National Parks. We packed all our gear, checked out of The Wynn and the four of us took a cab to the Las Vegas airport. It was here we picked up the hire car, we picked the biggest SUV our money could buy, a Nissan Pathfinder, it was great. Ash began the drive as we hit the interstate on our way to Zion National Park. It took a few hours to get to Zion and our first stop was the National Park sign. Each of us got out of the car and took some photos, then shortly after got back in the car to find the visitors centre. We were a little nervous ... read more

After the glitz, glamour and bright lights of Las Vegas, it was time for us to begin the next leg of our journey. The epic road trip across the southern United States. On Tuesday morning we picked up our car from the airport. After much "negotiation" with the lady behind the counter, we managed to rent the Chevrolet Cobalt that we thought we had booked and paid for, instead of the little Toyota Yaris they thought we had booked an paid for! So we got a midsize car for the price of a compact. Bargain! Another lesson learnt... its better to book direct with a company than through an agent. After packing up and checking out of the Venetian we headed to Walmart for the first major mission of our road trip... stocking up! We spent ... read more

Zion Park is even more beautiful than we remembered from last time we were here. The muddy Virgin River cuts a deep valley through red sandstone cliffs towering above in multi-hued peaks. In the spring, trees and grasses are green, providing a pretty contrast to the red rocks. Driving through, we were so struck by the beauty that, on the spur of the moment, we decided to stay a night in the Best Western just outside the west entrance in the town of Springdale, Utah to allow us to have some time to really see the park. We were so glad we did. Utah State highway 9 is one of the prettiest drives that you can take, taking you from the west to the east entrance, on the south east corner of the park, and going ... read more

I knew that the first two weeks were going to be hard and hurt like hell ... I just forgot how much hell hurt. God I'm unfit, and I'm talking day one of Biggest Loser unfit. This is going to be a little bit of a struggle methinks, but then the scenery ... god this is a beautiful place, I mean just take a look a some of my happy snaps. Anyway, back to the beginning, after a bit of a restless and nervous night in St George determining my route out of town, I wobbled nervously out onto the road, turned right, rode up to the first intersection 30 metres away and promptly chickened out, straight back up onto the sidewalk and back to the hotel to confirm my chosen route. If the beginning bodes ... read more

Tuesday 6th April 2010 We are outta there! We packed up the beast and with the bright lights of Las Vegas behind us we hit the open road (Interstate 15 for the spotters) towards Zion National Park. We crossed the deserts of Nevada and Arizona and as we entered Utah the landscape changed from flat open spaces with tumbleweed to towering red sandstone cliffs (some of which are the highest in the world). By late afternoon we'd arrived in Zion National Park and happily gave up the full faciltites of the Las Vegas campground for the bare minimum at the Watchman Campsite within the Park. Especially when you consider the incredible pitch assigned to us, beside the river, catching the morning and evening sun and surrounded by the towering Zion Canyon. We wasted no time setting ... read more

Every day we think we've seen the most incredible rock formations and that there can't be anything more spectacular....and then there is! Day 16 Page, Arizona to Zion National Park, Utah We started the day out with a trip to Antelope Canyon...Bill had struck up a conversation with a German tourist at an overlook outside of the Grand Canyon, and she had mentioned that she was heading for Page to see this canyon. On the way into Page, we saw a sign for the canyon but knew nothing about it. We were given a tourist booklet in the hotel, and saw the tours offered by the Navajo to this beautiful sight and decided to book one for the morning...the canyon is a slot in the beautifully colored rocks....you walk through with a guide...it takes about an ... read more

Zion National Park KC and I left Kanab behind and went north and then west. We entered the Zion NP about 8 AM and the sun was just starting to light up the unique rock formations and structures. Betty and I did not spend much time in Zion, but we talked of it often. I know the last time here, we did not take the Shuttle into the canyon because little white, ferocious beasts were not allowed. So we camped and moved on to the North Rim. An interesting phenomena took place whenever we drove on US 89, regardless of the vehicle it automatically headed to the Grand Canyon. I kept telling Betty “it is out of my control”. Our one extend visit did result in some powerful memories and I will relate them in the ... read more
