C: We arrived into Zion in the evening and the road in is probably the most awesome road we've ever driven down. Huge mountains towering over us with massive drop offs into canyons to the side. The road continues right down to the base of the canyon and then into the small town of Springdale where we were staying. The sun had gone down by the time we arrived and there was a different kind of crazy scenery - pretty much every building covered in Christmas lights, even the street lights had been lit up to look like candy canes! The town was completely dedicated to tourism, loads of hotels, motels and places to eat. We found a little Thai restaurant and had some excellent Thai curries. The next day and we were ready to explore ... read more

Zion Canyon National Park is vastly different from Bryce Canyon. At Bryce the road takes you along the top of the canyon and you look down onto the Hoodoos. At Zion you drive through a long (1.4 miles), dark tunnel and then on down a very windy road into the canyon itself. Because of the high volume of visitors they have, Zion Canyon is only accessible by shuttle bus. These shuttle buses are free and run about every 6 minutes, stopping at all the view points along the way so you can get on and off the shuttle as much as you want and stay as long as you like at each point. So rather than looking down into the canyon, you are actually at the very bottom of the canyon, looking UP. We chose to ... read more

We weren't actually attacked but the minute we sat down by the river a couple of squirrel warriors appeared. They pleaded for a bit of my muffin sitting up begging with their little paws outstretched - looking so cute - and not getting any ( there is a big fine for feeding the animals !!! and it's something I don't do with wild animals) they then started running around me and looked like they would jump into my rucksack and search for more muffins . Suzanne on Mother-alert said move mum they might bite you and I thought it best to obey. So watch out for the little beggars if you are doing the Riverside Walk in Zion National Park. That was yesterday, we started with a great coffee stop in Springdale and took the free ... read more

I passed through Zion National Park last year, but due to a flash flood warning, I wasn’t able to hike it’s most famous trail, The Narrows. I hadn’t really intended on returning to Zion this year, but a stunning photo of the soaring canyon walls of The Narrows graced the cover of the road atlas by my side and I couldn’t very well look at it every day and not take that hike. The Narrows rates #5 in National Geographic’s ranking of America’s Best 100 Adventures. A permit is required to hike the entire 16 mile stretch of The Narrows from top to bottom (or from bottom to top if you so chose), but anyone can hike a few miles up into the canyon without one. I hadn’t gotten a permit, and I didn’t have a ... read more

Roadtrip SW USA...As the snow falls on Zion. My skin is tingling...my nostrils are blowing steam as I breathe...every one of my senses is alive. I feel like a young buck ready to roll in the snow and shake and shake off my white fur coat...ice droplets flying in a million pieces...like a dog emerging from the frigid surf and shimmering dry. It's great to be in Zion as the snow comes tumbling down...then it clears so the sky is a burnt blue...the trees shimmering...ready to drop their white load as we brush by. Time for some pancakes with oozing bumbleberry syrup...strong aromatic coffee...then to hit the road...and holler at the top of our voices...and somehow get the thick snow off the car so we can get going. Play the video and enjoy Page One of ... read more

Day 4 started with a drive from Tusayan, AZ to Springdale, UT and ended with a most beautiful hotel as well as a most beautiful national park. We drove up I-89N and saw some of the coolest land formations and geologic rock structures known to man. Ever since my early geology classes when I learned about Zion, I have wanted to go to it. I finally got my chance. The rock formations were amazing and our LaQuinta Inn Hotel was in front of the most gorgeous backdrop. We drove through the park and hiked up to Weeping Rock. It was amazing! I did not want to come back! We even saw wild turkeys and deer crossing the road in front of us. The park was too cool and the hotel was very hospitable and the breakfast ... read more

Geo: 37.2012, -112.989For our last day in Zion, we decided to exit out the East Tunnel and then head on to Lake Powell for our last night before heading back home. This is one of the most awe-inspiring parts of the park. You travel up and out of the canyon and through the famous tunnel that was built beginning in the 1920's and completed in the 1930's.Since we had left the campground fairly early, we did not face much traffic heading out. We did get to see the bighorn sheep as we left the area. There was a nice place for us to pull out and watch them until they disappeared from view. Nice treat! The ride back to Lake Powell was uneventful and we had our pick of the campsite since the holiday season was over. ... read more

Geo: 37.2012, -112.989Had a great ride from the campground into town to try and find some wine. According to the map, it was less than 5 miles one way so off we went. Followed the path along the river and made the climb up to the main street. From there, the road followed a downhill path.Got there but store did not open until 11:00 am so decided to head back to the campground and do some exploring there. The ride back did not seem as difficult as thought it might be. The ride was beautiful because as you ride along you have some spectacular views of the canyon walls.... read more
