Provo was an adventure. It didn’t really start out that way, but the possibility was there, and we took it. The biggest thing, or perhaps I should say the longest or highest thing, was hiking to the Y on Y Mountain. I had seen that it was a ‘thing’ to do in town, but I wanted to see for myself how feasible it was before I committed to doing it. While we did other things in town, that was the most time-consuming. We left Salt Lake City after the organ recital in the Tabernacle. The drive from Salt Lake City to Provo was all interstate, but the views were magnificent. I guess we still haven’t gotten used to the mountains being everywhere. It was less than 45 minutes to get there, and our first stop was ... read more

We left at 7am and decided that we did not want to be in the car for so long today and canceled our plans for Colorado and are headed back north. Our first stop this morning was Capital Reef National Park. I think that this is my favorite national park that I have seen. Dramatic rock landscape with canyons of lush orchards and rivers. We were able to pick our own apple and peaches to eat later today and tomorrow. There is so much history in these parks with the Mormon settlers. They came into these areas and brought necessities to turn this barren area into a lush livable space with the help of the church. There have been a lot of European travelers everywhere we go. We have never seen this before. We would normally ... read more

This was a beautiful run down Provo Canyon, past Deer Creek Reservoir and Bridal Veil Falls. 26.2 miles downhill might seem easy to those who have never done it before, but without strong quads it's a killer. Fortunately for me, I have very strong quads. Just two days after the race and I can run almost pain free, thanks to killer leg muscles and a long post-race ice bath. As I have another race next weekend I was very careful to run slow, to keep from getting injured, though I did take almost 30 minutes off my time from my last marathon. Here are a few photos from the race. ... read more

THE BASICS On Friday, our last night in Jackson, we had a gorgeous full rainbow toward the east, and the next morning, we had pea-sized hail. Huge skies which could contain ominous dark clouds in one direction, and white puffy clouds on robin's egg blue in another, have enchanted us in this West. On Saturday we traveled on to Montpelier, Idaho, through the Grand Canyon of the Snake and heavy winds. A very comfortable campground so we stayed two nights, and only left to visit the California/Oregon Trail Center, where we enjoyed sitting in a "covered wagon" and listening to costumed "pioneers" recount their travails but their fun as well. As we drove south on Monday, we spotted a nice RV park in Brigham City, Utah, with a shopping center across the highway, so stayed there. ... read more

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! So, I'm sitting in the Cameo yesterday afternoon after hiking on the Templeton trail in Sedona, and Bob comes in and says, he says to me "what would you think if we pulled up stakes and headed out tomorrow?" Between the two of us, we have counted about 40 No-See-Em bites between the two of us. We think we must have parked right next to a hoard of them at just the right time of year. They were MERCILESS and brutal. I just looked them up and the bites will be affecting us for TWO WEEKS! Bob is not a happy boy, and neither am I. We have no idea how many Allie and Lu have - they apparently care not what species you are. We are really hoping that we didn't bring any with ... read more

Geo: 40.2337, -111.668Why'd they have to put Phoenix so far away? Eleven and a half hours of driving and we're only to Provo. It was gorgeous though. We saw about a dozen deer coming down the Swan Valley, kind of in and out of the rain. As morning broke there were patches of fog clinging to the trees and hiding our views of the mountain tops--but beautiful still. In fact, Seeley Lake was socked in when we got there--I've never seen fog there before. We've always gone in the summer.Lake Alva was perfectly still in the morning light and made me want to stop for a couple hundred photos, but alas! it was less than 2 hours into our trip! It must be a crime in several countries to hurrry through such a valley as that. The grasses ... read more

Nancy monitored Rich for signs of concussion all night. All was well, so he convinced her that he was fine to drive. He was limping, but it didn't hurt to drive. As we left the national park, we enjoyed the splashes of yellow on the mountain. Great Basin National Park is a mountain oasis in the middle of the desert. Aspen and willow were turning yellow by the clear streams. Bushes and other ground cover were turning orange and red. In the West, we savor these pockets of color in the middle of sagebrush chapparal and the evergreen forests. We crossed the line into Utah and entered Mountain Time. The landscape on U.S. Highway 50 was beautiful. The mountains were caused by earthquakes and had colorful flat layers that angled up from the valleys to ... read more

Another beautiful day and this time it was actually quite warm when we arose and readied ourselves for breakfast at Hojo,Brigham City. We headed off down UT-89 towards SLC and a few hours exploring the world of the Mormans. We thought we couldnt come to this part of the world without seeing what it was all about even though if we were at home we would not be answering the door when the boys in white shirts come knocking. We soon realised that following 89 was going to take too long even though SLC was only 40 odd miles distant so it was time to flick onto I-15.Well the first minute or so was OK as the slip lane allowed us to enter the interstate at 50mph.However it was soon apparent that no one follows the speed ... read more
