Another beautiful day and this time it was actually quite warm when we arose and readied ourselves for breakfast at Hojo,Brigham City.
We headed off down UT-89 towards SLC and a few hours exploring the world of the Mormans. We thought we couldnt come to this part of the world without seeing what it was all about even though if we were at home we would not be answering the door when the boys in white shirts come knocking.
We soon realised that following 89 was going to take too long even though SLC was only 40 odd miles distant so it was time to flick onto I-15.Well the first minute or so was OK as the slip lane allowed us to enter the interstate at 50mph.However it was soon apparent that no one follows the speed limit of 65mph even though that speed is perfectly adequate to get one quickly to the desitnation. One generally dosent want to travel in the right hand lane because then you have to deal with cars entering the interstate all travelling 70mph plus and also many of the right hand lanes take you off the interstate when you dont want to.So I braved the middle lane
with cars and trucks whizzing by on both sides. Its not that the Dodeg Caliber wont do 75mph it was just that we thought that that speed was too fast.
Anyway SLC quickly came into sight and we headed off the interstate for Temple Square. The streets of SL are W I D E and parking was actually quite easy to find and free on Saturday.
We walked the short distance to the Temple Square and were initially puzzled by all the men in suits and WHITE shirts walking by holding little black books.Of course they had all been come from the temple and were going who knows where but there were hundreds and going in all directions.
We did the 30 min tour which gave us an introduction to the square with two very pleasant "sisters"one from Atlanta and the other Sth Korea.
We went into the Tabernacle,a huge building with superb accoustics and listened to a half hour recital from a guy who played the organ. The organ had 1800 pipes and hence the sound was something pretty unique.Shame the choir werent on as well.
We went on and tried to find out a bit more about the Benvies at the
Family Search centre which was housed in another building on the square.Another very pleasant young "sister"this time from Brazil (what a multi nation religion this Mormon religion is)helped us but to no avail. She explained that it was because they are still transferring records from paper to the internet and if we went over to the library there would be more chance to find paper based(on moicrofiche) information.
Being Saturday they were pusing weddings thru at a rate of knots.Gretchen commented that some of the brides we saw were wearing "meringues"(you will know what that means Leigh). The groups seemed to move around the square having photos taken at strategic spots. You cannot get inside the temple unless you are a Mormon but we did the circuit around this very impressive building made of granite hauled 25 miles when it was built without reinforcing back in the mid 1800's.Some of the brides looked very young but then so did the grooms.
The building you can go up to the 26th level to view out over SLC was closed on Saturday so we headed back to the car in mid afternoon and ready to travel onto Provo where we thought we would try for overnight accommodation.
After late lunch at a drive in Sonic we headed back onto I45 with some intrepidation to get onto Provo and because there was nothing of note to visit between there and SLC.
We chose Sleep Inn and got a really good deal from the discount book and a flashy hotel to what we have been used to with laundry and pool. Also a mall close by which meant we became mall walkers and stopped in at JC Penney and a few other stores in a rather quiet mall.Found an Albertsons and dined on a very tasty lasanga and additives
