I departed from my camp at Bears Ears and continued driving West on Utah Hwy 95 in White Canyon (named after the hard white sandstone at the top of the canyon inner gorge). This is BLM land (Bureau of Land Management) with lots of free legal dispersed camping. I followed Utah Hwy 95 and explored the dirt San Yuan County roads, and ex-county roads (trails still open) that overlook the White Canyon inner gorge (100' to 250' deep); with some descending down the gorge and back up the North side. There is legal free camping permitted on these dirt roads and trails. The BLM will post signs if they do not want you to camp in an area. I drove the San Juan County road 2124, a nice private place, then moved on for other views. ... read more

From the South side of Blanding, Utah (US Hwy 191), I turned West on Utah Hwy 95. I drove about 15 miles to Comb Ridge (a geologic monocline) but did not have the time to explore it on this trip. About 25 miles West of Comb Ridge I turned NW on Utah Hwy 275 towards Natural Bridges National Monument. After about a mile I turned North on San Yuan County road 228 going up to the Bears Ears pass where I would camp for the night. This narrow dirt road (without guard rails) was well graded and only a little bumpy. (If somebody drove off that road that would be the end of them.) This is BLM land with free legal backcountry camping. This was an enjoyable drive for me up to my camp at the ... read more

Now this blog is from my 2017 travel camping adventure, but relevant to my current blogs. According to Wikipedia, Comb Ridge is a geologic monocline fault running North-South about 80 miles from the Abajo Mountains in Southern Utah to near Kayenta, Arizona. There is a number of very old Puebloan cliff dwellings and other ruins along that fault. There is also a number of Tritylodont fossils there. Going Westbound on Utah Hwy 95 from Blanding, the East Side of Comb Ridge has white sandstone rising upward above the surrounding area. When they built Utah Hwy 95 they used explosives to blast open that top sandstone to make the highway route possible. The land sunk over 600 feet down (West side) with a switchback going down through the reddish rock. (Note: there are strict "no parking" signs ... read more

Scenic Hwy 95 runs West from Blanding to Hanksville in Utah. This is mostly BLM (Bureau of Land Management) with free and open camping. The middle section with the Colorado River is Glen Canyon Nat. Rec Area (US Park Service) that used to have free camping, but no longer. I made my usual stop at Clarks Market for supplies including fruits and their large collection of shasta sodas, with sugar and sugar free. From Blanding there are interesting geological features (mostly canyons) set in a scrub desert ecosystem. About thirteen miles West of Blanding is a major geological monocline called Comb Ridge that runs North-South for about 100 miles. South of Blanding on US 183 Comb Ridge is visible, but smaller, with a good parking space to get off the hwy. At Utah Hwy 95 Comb ... read more

J'ai réservé à Blanding, ce qui me ... read more

Just a quick note from southern Utah. We awoke this morning to the sad news of deaths because of flash flooding in Hildale, Utah. Needless to say, the local TV coverage has been quite pervasive, although it was also the lead story on NBC National News. And tonight comes more sad news, that there are dead and missing in Zion National Park. Those sites are closer to southwest Utah, and we are in southeast Utah. And fortunately, because we move slowly, we had not yet gotten near the Parks over there. The skies have been spectacular today. We are on a high wide plain with striking panoramic views, and it is fascinating that the cloud colors can vary so much in different directions. We were awakened early this morning by a vigorous thunderstorm, and more storms ... read more

Start: Dolores Ziel: Blanding Tageskilometer: 133.2 Höchstgeschwindigkeit: 62.1 Gesamtkilometer: 4'412.2.

Trailhead To reach the trailhead, go south out of Blanding about 3.5 miles until the junction with highway 95. Follow highway 95 about 10.6 miles until crossing a bridge over Butler Wash. This is the trailhead for the main ruins, park at a small pullout on the west side of the bridge. (just before mile post 111) To reach the tourist ruins, continue just past mile post 111, to a signed paved road on the right. Follow this a short distance to the trailhead where parking and pit toilets are available. Route Tourist Ruins To reach the tourist ruins, simply follow the signed trail. It is a short hike, less than 1 mile round trip. There are some interpretative guides at the trailhead. Be sure to pick one up, as it provides great information about the ... read more

We awoke in our quite secluded campsite and took a walk in the woods, only to find out the area has been troubled by black bears. Fortunately for us we did not see any evidence or suggestion of bears while we were there. We posed for our 35th anniversary photo in the woods and then left for our day's adventure. We rode over 130 miles round trip to see the Natural Bridges National Park. On the way we hiked into the hills to get a closer look at ancient Anasazi cliff dwellings. Aside from nearly running out of gas on the Silverwing, the day was perfect. We might not have made it back to civilization if it had not been for a sympathetic park ranger who sold me two gallons of gas (at the low price ... read more
