We got a late start this morning. We were up at 6:30 AM, but decided to spend some time making changes to our trip itinerary. We decided to spend more time in New Mexico and then head for Colorado. Our good friends Bob and Gloria offered us their lodge in Winter Park, and having been there twice already, we jumped at the chance to go there again. It is such a wonderful place in a wonderful town. So…after making new reservations and cancelling others, we were off at 9:30 AM and 87 degrees, heading west through Hill Country toward western Texas. The drive today was eclectic. It began through flat lands over roadways bleached white by the southern sun and adorned beautifully with leafy green trees. And on a day when the sky is mostly blue ... read more

We woke this morning to sunny skies and calm winds, a great relief from yesterday, when the winds in Holly Beach were so strong it was difficult to close the car door. We left the hotel at 7:55 and 81 degrees and hopped right onto I-10, which was right outside the hotel. The first leg of our trip took us to Houston. Of course we passed the obligatory fuel plants along the way, one in particular looking like a monster of an erector set on steroids. And one gas plant had the biggest flame burning at the top of a chimney that I have ever seen…seems like a real waste of fuel, but I guess there is a purpose in this. And after checking the internet, the expert authority on everything (not), it seems that these ... read more

Well, we made it through the storm zone. When we left the hotel this morning at 7 AM and 81 degrees, the air was as thick as it often is, when a huge storm is brewing off the coast. The skies were brimming with black billowy rain clouds and the humidity was just hanging in the air like a wet blanket. We were under the outer bands of a storm and it was a familiar feeling, having been through more than our share of hurricanes over the past 20 years. We drove through a number of rain bands on our trip across Alabama and Mississippi and into Louisiana, but by the time we got to Lafayette, the skies began to clear and the rest of the day was partly sunny. The gamble paid off and we ... read more

In 1845 the Republic of Texas chartered the Old Nacogdoches University Building as one of the first six colleges in Texas. This university building was constructed in 1858-1859 (Texas was a new US State then) at a cost of $10,500 USD. Classes started there in 1859. The "Red House" is where they started classes in 1845; and classes were held in other buildings all at or near the downtown Nacogdoches Square until the university building was completed in 1859. In 1904 All of Washington Square was deeded to Nacogdoches Independent School District (NISD). The Rusk Building (also called the "Old Red Building") was added to Washington Square in the 1910s as the first Nacogdoches High School. The other nice buildings were added later. In 1939 the "White Building" was finished as the new Nacogdoches High School ... read more

After an excellent flight on AirNZ 28 straight to Houston we were assailed by very, very warm temperatures, such that you duck from air conditioned building to car to building again, spending as little time as possible actually outside. The reason for staying a couple of nights here was to visit the private Menil Art Collection. Unfortunately a couple of things we went to see such as the Rothko Chapel, the Dan Flavin building and the Contemporary Gallery were closed. However the building complex alone, including the Cy Twombly Gallery, was well worth it. Set in an outlying suburb covering a number of blocks, the manicured and we’ll watered lawns contrasted with the stark white low modernist buildings. Covered walkways surround immaculate gardens. The inward sloping roofs ensure that rain is directed onto the gardens. A ... read more

It was June 8, 2019 when we had our Nacogdoches Blueberry Festival. I got to park my truck at the Sterne-Hoya Museum & Library; so I started my Blueberry Festival there. Adolphus Sterne has the oldest house remaining in Nacogdoches. Sterne was one of the three most important people involved in the independence of Tejas from Mexico. Sam Houston was the most important political and military leader for Texas independence; who made his home at the Sterne home, while not traveling on business. TJ Rusk was the third leader of Texas independence who lived an easy horse ride to the Sterne house. I wish I could go back in time to one of the many independence meetings at the Sterne home to hear the planning of those three leaders. Adolphus Sterne was directly involved in the ... read more

Last year I visited some old abandoned historic buildings including the Mary Allen Seminary that operated from 1886-1972 in Crockett, Texas. This school was founded in 1886 by Reverend Richard Allen and his wife Mary Allen as the only school in Texas open to freed Afro-American women. The school was administered and taught by white women from a local Presbyterian Church. Unfortunately Mary Allen passed away in 1887; but they named the school after her. In 1924 The Texas school board appointed the first Afro-American administrator, Reverend Burt Smith, who made many important changes to the Mary Allen Seminary including: changing to an all Afro-American faculty, admitting Afro-American men, and changing the curriculum to include the sciences and providing needed vocational training like dressmaking, cooking, and other needed skills for the students to make it in ... read more

On January 20, 2019 I was invited to watch the Lunar Eclipse at Walters Tree Farm, about nine miles East of the City of Nacogdoches. I was there after sunset and was ready to shoot in a dark place behind the out building. I shot a pic before the eclipse to show a pine tree and some oak trees. I started shooting with the stages of the eclipse and it was hit or miss with the pics that I show here. I got some halfway eclipse shots and a mostly eclipse pic using my inexpensive Walmart tripod. This took a few hours, and by time of totality the moon was directly overhead; making my tripod useless. I used my zoom and free-handed some three second exposures of pics of totality. You'all know that we do not ... read more

Hello everyone We have arrived in Houston Texas,so glad to leave the plane, not much leg room on the second leg,but hey we have survived. It’s lovely and warm here and great to catch up with our friends. We picked our bags up,and hopped on the car rental bus to pick up our car,we chose a Kia Sportage for our rd trip, next stop was the phone shop where we all got sim cards,Robyn couldn’t use your phone as the battery has died even when charging. On the road then to Austin Texas for 2 nights, slept in next morning, and then leisurely we went walking to city. Went on a 30min tour of the Texas capital building where all the decisions are made. Had a nanny nap in afternoon as we were all feeling jet lagged and then later ... read more
