Day 20 – Saturday – Austin, Texas WOAHHH what a day!!! So after "surviving" another night in our hotel on Bourbon Street (lol, i LOVE my earplugs!!) we had an early start!!! John, Jen & Dean dropped me off at the airport for my little side excursion...it was a bit of a surprise so I hadn't mentioned it on here before so...some background...I guess the SHORT version, is that a whole BUNCH of the BBB girls (for those not up to speed that's the Brides/Babies internet forum I joined MANY years ago!!) live in Austin, Texas and it's surrounds. AND, it just happenned that it was Brenda's baby shower on Saturday, so Jessica (one of the other girls) and I schemed to get me there as a big surprise for Brenda!! It involved two flights ... read more

greetings sportsfans, i'm testing the digital waters, preparing to inform our loving friends and family as ladye and i explore the asian frontiers. ladye leaves in 3 days for bangkok, hong kong and further chinese locations yet to be determined. i will follow in about 3 weeks, although i will spend a week alone in thailand as ladye says her goodbyes to china. we rendezvous in bangkok and then head to india for the main course of our 4 month excursion. our itinerary is intentionally ambiguous to allow maximum agility. we will certainly spend time in northern india, perhaps venturing south if climate and intuition call. or, we may visit the highest nation in the world, nepal. or perhaps both. we return through thailand, and will probably give ourselves several weeks on the west coast ... read more

I parked the motor home and spent four great days with Bev in her new digs. Left Austin in brilliant sunshine on Thursday morning, temperature about 75 degrees; pulled into Fort Stockton 45 degrees, I had to put a sweat-shirt on for the first time since March!! Friday morning was grey and dismal but I was New Mexico bound. I really love Texas, it is so diverse (in every way). I entered through the Orange, Texas border where the landscape is absolutely flat - and travelling on Interstate 10 it stays that way for more than 300 miles. In Austin which is basically in the middle of the state, the west side is almost mountainous while the east side is very flat. Some fantastic view of the city and surrounding lakes can be enjoyed from ... read more

School Field Trip Time! We always take our kids to the Memorial Museum to look at the fossils. The Memorial Museum is free and located on the University of Texas campus. Its two grown jewels are the Quetzalcoatlus and the Onion Creek Mosasaur. Both are HUGE fossils of ancient dinosaurs. The Quezalcoatlus dominates the Great Hall as you walk in. It is suspended from the ceiling and you can imagine it swooping down to snatch your pets and children for a mid-afternoon snack. The wingspan of the pterosaur is HUGE. It was discovered in the Big Bend area of Texas. So I guess the old adage of everything being bigger in Texas is true. The Onion Creek Mosasaur was found here in the Austin area at Onion Creek. It looks like a cross between an alligator ... read more

FEBRUARY 18 Race day came early (dark, cold, early!) and yet our spirits were excited and alert. There is nothing like a crowd of runners up at the crack of dawn, chipper and chatty about the task ahead. I took my ritual picture with the local law enforcement, watched the early morning fireworks and off we went! We had a blast, singing, taking in the Austin sights and of course receiving our medals at the finish line. Best part is the hot bath waiting at Janis’ home and the stack of pancakes I devoured for post-race breakfast! ... read more

FEBRUARY 2007 PRESIDENT'S WEEKEND Since running is my favorite sport and traveling my most treasured pastime, why not combine the 2? So off to Texas I go! It is high time to introduce my best pal Janis, to road racing. Any experienced running aficionado knows, the first stop before the race is the Running Expo. All signed up for the Austin Half Marathon, we explored the isles of run socks, clothes and sports food energy bars.... read more

2007 MH CC Trek (m1) A good friend suggested I create an Internet blog to keep in touch with family, friends, and to diary our long awaited, and much overdue vacation. I must admit, the very thought of learning a "new technology" repulsed me. Heck, I didn't know what a blog was, and I sure in the hell didn't know where to start. As this is my first "blog," please don't be too critical of it's content, layout, spelling, grammar, or style. (By David) Monday April 16, 2007 Our goal was to leave around noon. Knowing Bruce, you know that didn't happen! Our first day's trek was around 250 miles. Which was about half of what we were shooting for. (By David) Tuesday April 17, 2007 --Split Rail RV Lets just say it wasn't the prettiest ... read more

It was a great day for feeling artsy. So Rob and I headed out to the Blanton Museum at the UT campus for a stroll. I hadn't been to the museum since it reopened after some architectural fiasco. I really didn't see what the big deal was. Some people complain too much. The first floor had an exhibit on modern/abstract art from South America. The rest of the floors housed the permanent collection which consisted of reproductions of Greek sculpture and some more abstract art and sculpture. My favorite was a giant pit filled with billions upon billions of shiny copper pennies. I wanted to roll around them, dig my hands deep into them, and put them in my mouth to remind me of the coppery-metallic taste I used to love as a child (Yeah, I ... read more
