Ok here’s something I forgot about 3 days ago. When I was coming across one of those big mountains on my way to Carlsbad, I kept thinking something’s different. Then I realized that I wasn’t on a desert mountain like the others I had been across. This was a mountain with tall deep green pine trees marching up the slopes. And they were all pines, no spruce or deciduous and it was cool and refreshing like being in northern Ontario. It put me in mind of the Black Forest in Germany where all the evergreens are of such a dark green that they almost look black. I left KOA Carlsbad at 8 a.m. this morning driving past acres of pistachio orchards. Unfortunately it’s too early for them to be flowering because they are stunning pink in ... read more

Route 66 Blog part 4 18th October 2022 – 21st October From Amarillo, we drove to Cadillac Ranch. This was a short drive from our hotel, and it was a quick stop along the way. Cadillac Ranch is located in a field where 10 Cadillac cars, dating from between 1949 and 1963. These cars were installed in 1974 by Chip Lord. The cars have been installed with their noses concreated into the dirt. Apparently they are at the same angle as the Great Pyramids in Giza, Egypt. These cars were an art installation, however they are now a community/ tourist attraction and ongoing canvas for many generations. Locals and tourists are invited to bring cans of spray paint to make their mark, and of course we made ours – luckily there were a few cans of ... read more

This will be a short post -- we were both exhausted today. As we left New Mexico and got closer to Texas, the land started changing. The beautiful mountains gave way to very. flat. land. We tried to capture it in the photos. Amazingly, we saw NO police through all of CA, AZ and NM, then literally saw about 15 in the brief time we drove through Texas! I know we didn't see the best parts of Texas, but my impressions were too many cops, very flat land, lots of cattle, and the worst interstate quality we've seen yet. What DID fascinate me was the wind turbines. They are EVERYWHERE and literally went on for miles and miles. My research indicates that West Texas A&M University began wind energy research in 1970 that led to the ... read more

Blog 10-30-17 Santa Fe, NM to Amarillo, TX It was up and out this morning because we had an appointment at 9 am to get propane in the motorhome from the campground. We were all ready to go by 8:40 so we took the dogs for their last run in the park. By 9:30 we were on the road and heading east and south to connect with interstate 40. The wind was an issue this morning and it was a full side wind while we were going south then heading east on 40 it was a head wind. That was tough on gas but easier to handle the camper so we motored right along. The scenery went from desert sage brush with an occasional tree to no trees then to having a virtual forest of pinyon ... read more

Our first stop was also our first stop on the trip on historic rt66. Pops a famous truck stop. Food fuel and fizz. Famous for their large variety of sodas. The food was very good burgers and fries kind of place. We all had somewhat normal sodas with our food. Mike and I both bought custom 6 packs though with things like bacon, grass, and beef jerky soda. Overall a very cool minor detour. Next it was off to Amarillo where we stopped at two locations. First we had to get our Texas steak at no other than the Big Texan. Great place but either mike or I had it in us to try the 72 oz steak challenge (probably for the best). The steaks were decent but the place was really cool. After sleeping first ... read more

Geo: 35.2072, -101.834We left Decatur this morning and drove just to Amarillo for the night. We will make it the rest of the way home tomorrow. We were in Childress at lunchtime so we stopped in at Top Notch Texas BBQ. This was the third time that we have been there, but it was the first time that it has been busy. The other times there were only one or two tables besides us. Now we have a favorite restaurant in Childress. Never thought about being able to say that. I have a favorite in Boyd, too. I may make special plans to go back through Boyd so we can eat at gogogumbo again on another trip to Dallas. When we checked into the Homewood Suites, we were given a room that had a strong and ... read more

Howdy from the Great State of Texas! For us Amarillo by evening was full of surprises and fun! Just off of interstate 40, west of Amarillo we saw some unique and colorful structures literally sprouting up from the dirt. A bit of research told us that this was the famous??? Cadillac Ranch. Evidently you can bring spray paint and leave your mark on these old cars which are partly buried! Weird but interesting. Our campground was just off the interstate which I knew. What the website didn't say was that our Motorcoach would be directly lined up with a runway at Amarillo International Airport! What a treat! We were very surprised at the size of the greater Amarillo area. It is loaded with hotels and restaurants. The world famous Big Texan offers free limo rides from ... read more

Geo: 35.2072, -101.834We made it to Amarillo by late afternoon, after leaving home about 10:30 so I could stop and get my nails done on the way out of town. Philip dropped me off and went for gas then dropped our leftover groceries at Erin's while I was busy at the salon. We checked into the Hilton Garden Inn then had dinner at Dyer's—delicious as always. Phil worked on school stuff during the evening, but didn‘t have a lot to do. We made it an early night.... read more

Geo: 35.2072, -101.834Another day of driving from Fort Smith to Amarillo. We could have driven the rest of the way tonight, but it would have put us into Albuquerque very late, so we decided to stop one more night. After eating barbecue in every state that we've been through, sometimes more than once, this was the first time in a long time arriving in Amarillo that I didn't insist on going to Dyer's for dinner. Instead we went to Saltgrass for steak for Phil and chicken fried steak for me. We will be home tomorrow.... read more
