Day 2 and still alive! Woo! 538.1 hard miles today. I got a later start this morning leaving Holbrook, AZ mainly because I couldn't move. Everything hurt when I woke up. Luckily, some coffee, aspirin and a hot shower and copies amounts of moaning/swearing got me going and by 6AM the Mothership was heading east again! Arizona was gone quickly but New Mexico took forever. It was so ungodly hot today and there is no shade to be had in that state. Generally I seek out said shade when I take my leg stretching breaks. No dice this morning though. I kept going long past the point where my back and legs were killing me in a vain attempt to find a small shady patch but I finally gave up and got off on a side ... read more

Day: 29/30/31 Distance: 12,347 I'm in Amarillo with Mom and Dad (Cyndee and Bob) writing this blog and getting reading to go to dinner with the oldsters. I guess I shouldn't make too much fun of my parents since my kids consider me an oldster. I initially tried to write this blog in Reno, then again this last evening when I was in Cortez, NM but the Internet connections were so bad that I gave up in frustration. Anyway, this entry will contain 3 days worth of traveling (actually 1 whole day and 2 half days). After my last blog entry in Reno, I ended up going to a Costco for a tire rotation. The tires were vibrating the car again. It looks like these tires are shot but fortunately, some of it should be covered ... read more

It's been a long but really nice day, except for an interlude when I was leaving Dallas/Fort Worth and discovered the Bluetooth in the Blue Bomber (henceforth known as BB my fake SUV) quit working! Now this is a tragedy, one worthy of many choice words from an old salt's naval vocabulary. BB's Bluetooth ties my iPhone and iPad to my car. No speaker phone, no streaming music, and no speaker phone (yes I said it twice). I hadn't realized I had gotten so attached to the Bluetooth in my car. Now that I have had to live like much of the unwashed masses I can tell you it ain't safe to use your cell phone while you are driving. Yes Yes I know most have figured that out by now but it still came as ... read more

Ordered breakfast in room and we shared scrambled eggs on toast and a muffin with jam. Thought it was $13.00 but when we checked out there was $3.00 extra for room service fee, $3.20 delivery fee and tax added so not as good a deal as I first thought. Decided not to eat the last 3 pieces of Pizza that we have had in the room for the last two nights (probably a god idea since we have no fridge here !). We left around 9.30am and headed west on I40. First stop was one of the iconic Route 66 diners called Lucille’s at Weatherford where Kerry ordered a coffee for starters and I had a classic strawberry milkshake which was delicious however I need to learn to take my time as brain freeze is not ... read more

I'm still loving the road trip on Route 66 with Sean! Today, we stopped by Amarillo, Texas, to take a break. We both love modern art, so of course we went to Cadillac Ranch to take some pictures - for those who haven't heard about this place, it's a very big sculpture located in the middle of a cow pasture, visible from the highway ; it's made of 10 Cadillacs half-buried nose-first into the ground, and spray-painted in various bright colors. The sculpture was created by Chip Lord, Hudson Marquez and Doug Michels in 1974. The cars represent the evolution of Cadillacs, notably the appearance and disappareance of tailfins on cars ; but what's even more amazing about this sculpture is that even if it's located on private ground, people are strongly encouraged to come and ... read more

Geo: 35.2072, -101.834Our time in Texas with the Killer B's is going to be brief but if you're in Texas you have to do the cowboy thing so our first stop was a horse ranch. The pace was decidedly methodical but these weren't trail horses so you could easily wander off on your own and channel your inner Clint Eastwood. We were also fortunate to be skirting the second-largest canyon in the United States, the Palo Duro Canyon. It is roughly 70 mi (110 km) long and reaches a width of 20 mi (32 km) at places. The owner of the ranch was part Comanche so she filled us in on the tragic history of the canyon. The land had remained under American Indian control until a military expedition was sent in 1874 to remove the ... read more

Geo: 35.222, -101.831 We got up on Friday morning and drove to Los Alamos. This is where they designed and built the first atom bomb and the 2 bombs that they dropped on Japan. There is still a huge facility there doing research on all kinds of things. People were assigned to go there in the early forties and were only given an address in Santa Fe to report to. Once they reported in they were told how to get to Los Alamos. Their driver's licenses didn't have names on them, only a number. If someone was born there, their birth certificate showed a P.O. Box in Santa Fe as their birth place. People who lived around the area didn't even know that a huge facility had been built on top of the plateau. We visited ... read more

Those who have read my blog, Wichita KS – Much More Than Cowboys and Cattle Drives, already know about the computer gremlins that haunted me near the end of 2015 and can skip to the next paragraph. For those new to my blog, welcome. A long story made short found all my MS Word blog files and my accompanying picture files deleted, so this blog is atypical of my standard product. It is brief and concise and is without pictures. My apologies, but regardless of the unadorned nature, I hope to provide potential travelers with some useful information that might make their trip more fulfilling. Thanks for reading, and please examine some of my pre-September 2015 blogs for a more representative sample of my work. On Wednesday, September 30, 2015, I departed Lake El Reno RV ... read more
