Farewells this morning were bittersweet as Audrey and Elliot (who had slept over in the RV with us last night) thought they should pack their clothes and come with us. The Via with the Auto Moto on trailer behind got many stares as we traveled to the first stop in Amarillo, home of The Big Texan Restaurant. It's famous for the free 72-oz steak. It's only free if you can eat it in less than an hour. No takers in our group. Richard and Ginger Cook, friends from 40+ years ago, came to the RV park for a visit before dinner. ... read more

Another fine day in Merri-can land and we are having a fine and dandy time ya'll, seeing the sights, smelling the food, pondering, contemplating...our very next move. Texas was and is a pretty fine place if we do say so ourselves, approaching Cadillac ranch us two cowboys hopped out to literally did the Cadillac ranch next to some upside down painted up Cadillacs and generally make some asses of ourselves, not to be pretentious or anything. Right now we sit in the cheapest motel for two in Amarillo, Amarillo reminds me somewhat of an Armadillo so I shall pretend that they first lived here. I'm sure of it. There are practically one hundred religious channels of preacher men preaching, which is a great tool to keep Bryce massaging my sore and weary back after much hardship, ... read more

Driving through New Mexico is amazing and possibly our favourite place so far, not to mention the weather here is to die for, hot summer days and cooler nights. Our first main stop was Albuquerque, a bustling little town with plenty of things to see and do, and of course, killer Mexican food. Driving into the town the houses were beautiful and your typical Mexican houses, all Earth tones of reds, beige and then the occasional green awnings to finish it off, with black wrought iron decorations for doors and fences and lush drought resistant plants. A Mexican house to build in either Alberta or Victoria…Perhaps, the houses here are mad and would feel like summer all year long, except if it were to snow and cover the whole building. We stopped in the Old Town ... read more

I woke up in a hotel room, still tired, at 7am and began to get ready to leave. I showered, ate breakfast, which was the best breakfast I’d had all trip with yogurts and bagels available. I walked outside to find the sun out and the sky blue with not a cloud in the sky, yet again. Despite the -6C temperatures, the car was no frosted up. I later discovered this may have been because two of the windows were left open ajar from the night before. Inside the car was almost colder than outside the car. I packed up the car and turned on the heating for a while. I then returned to the hotel room and watched TV until everyone else was ready to leave. It wasn’t until around 9.30am that we eventually left ... read more

Well another day of traveling, stayed in Amarillo Texas last night on our way to Sedona/Flagstaff today, about 600 miles. Ed is doing. ok considering his counts and chemo before we left. Richie, Brandy and Hunter have been wonderful getting the motorhome set up, driving and all around things to do. I think I might have to drive today for Rich can get on his motorcycle down Route 66 but he might just want to drive on thru and ride when we get to Arizona. Good trip nerves were a little on edge first day but have calmed down. ... read more

July 8, 2010 We did not overnight in Weatherford after all. We went looking for some sights to see and ended up in Clinton, OK so that is where we stayed. In the morning we took our time waking up and getting ready to start again. Started the day at the Rt. 66 Museum in Clinton. A very interesting place. Took lots of pictures. The Valentine Manufacturing Company built many diners along the highway and the museum has rebuilt one on the property. The Trade Winds Motel is across the street from the museum—Elvis stayed there and they have kept the room exactly as it was . It has become clear to me that Rt. 66 was, for years, nothing but Motels, Diners, and Gas Stations. When IKE became president he was smitten by the Audubon ... read more

Last Sunday morning we packed up after the England vs Germany game and climbed into the car to set off across the rest of New Mexico and begin our first foray into the Lone Star State of Texas. Our first scheduled stop was going to be Santa Fe, just west of Albuquerque (ABQ). The weather was beautiful, lovely sunshine, not too hot. When we reached Santa Fe, it turned out to be very similar to ABQ,if not a little bit smaller. The same orange and terracotta adobe buildings were all around the town centre. The town seemed full of art galleries, which aren't really mine and Rachel's cup of tea, so we decided after driving round the town a little more to press on east. Instead of taking the highway (we seemed to have been driving ... read more

We got a fairly early start yesterday morning for an 8+ hour drive. We stopped in Limon, CO for lunch at Denny’s. What a difference one letter makes. Penny’s yesterday was much, much better! We passed through Oklahoma & settled for the night in Amarillo at the Holiday Inn Express. The sweet young lady at the front desk upgraded us to a king suite. (I guess I really looked old & tired.) After checking in, we walked across the street to the Texas Roadhouse for a taste of home. Vanessa took great care of us & we left happy after a great meal. More tomorrow. ... read more

Cole left for work at 8:30 this morning & I started packing up my gear. I looked up the local public transit information and figured my route would be bus 5 to bus 2 and get off at the northern most point I could, and closest to 287 north. Because the Amarillo public transit is as efficient and punctual as the Abilene DPS, it only took 4 hours to get to where I wanted to. I ate lunch in the shade of a gas station a block away from the highway. Jumped into a dumpster for a piece of cardboard and wrote "Denver, CO" boldly with a sharpie. Standing on the corner of the intersection I waited only an hour for a ride. A green big rig with a flatbed trailer passed by and the man ... read more
