YOUNGS

Mom and 16 year old son doing the cross-country road trip we've talked about for years!

This will be a short post -- we were both exhausted today. As we left New Mexico and got closer to Texas, the land started changing. The beautiful mountains gave way to very. flat. land. We tried to capture it in the photos. Amazingly, we saw NO police through all of CA, AZ and NM, then literally saw about 15 in the brief time we drove through Texas! I know we didn't see the best parts of Texas, but my impressions were too many cops, very flat land, lots of cattle, and the worst interstate quality we've seen yet. What DID fascinate me was the wind turbines. They are EVERYWHERE and literally went on for miles and miles. My research indicates that West Texas A&M University began wind energy research in 1970 that led to the ... read more

Mom: Long day. We got up early and were sad to leave our beautiful place in Hollywood Hills, but the adventure was about to begin. I personally was rather happy to finally get out of the crazy L.A. traffic. We set Waze with our destination and followed where it led. Went north a good bit first, then eventually wound up on I-40. I told Justin we could technically now shut off all GPS tracking, as all we need to do is follow 40 home. This was our longest leg. About 7 hours to Flagstaff. Beautiful drive! The traffic and mountains gave way to more mountains and scrubby bushes. A few things were different than my expectations: I thought the mountains would give way faster, but we were in mountains pretty much all day today. Beautiful!! I ... read more

Welcome to Arizona!

Mom: Day 1 was spent flying, handling the "great car rental debacle of '19", then the harrowing ride to our Airbnb. We were both exhausted and konked out early, although we did enjoy some quiet time on the deck taking in the beautiful view! We were torn between 2 places for our L.A. stay--a modern apartment in a high rise in downtown L.A. and the "Handlebar Treehouse." We chose the latter and clearly made the right choice. Sam and Jason have been fabulous hosts (gave Justin his first Twinkie!) and even shared their dog Mac with us! I had a good bit of work to do today, but barely feels like work with this view and a dog by my side. We ventured out to "see all the stars as we walk down Hollywood Blvd." I ... read more

I did not get any sleep last night, none on the plane either. I was too excited about the trip to sleep last night at all. Saw a really beautiful sunrise from the plane. Landed in Dallas at about 7:45am central time zone. We have about a 2.5 hour layover, then it's on to L.A.... read more

My son shares my wanderlust, always asking to travel to new places and see new things. Living in Knoxville, TN, we are right on I-40, one of the interstates that cuts across the entire country, east to west. We've always talked about getting on I-40 and "just driving 'til it ends." We're finally doing it! Due to limited time, we're only driving one way. On Oct 8, we fly from Knoxville to L.A. where I've booked the Treehouse Airbnb for 2 nights. From there, it's on to Flagstaff, AZ; Albuquerque, NM; Amarillo, TX; Oklahoma City, OK; Memphis, TN back home to Knoxville! We'll be regularly updating this page with photos and stories to share with friends and family interested in our journey. Can't wait to see new sites and build new memories!... read more
