Today, I soaked up Portland culture. Portland feels like an environmentally conscious college town on a grand scale. This has both good and bad points. Portland is a great place to just hang out, drink good coffee or better beer, and relax. Portland also seems to attract people for whom doing anything else seems too difficult to handle. My hotel is the perfect introduction. Most hotel lobbies are empty. The Ace lobby was filled with people, drinking coffee and working on laptops. Since I had a conference to prep... read more

Portland, Oregon contains one of the largest urban park systems in the United States. Covering the hills west of the city, these parks are as good as the Blue Hills south of Boston, and much closer to downtown. I explored a small part of them today. Pittock Mansion The parks contain some more conventional sites in addition to extensive wilderness. Two of the most popular are the Pittock Mansion and the Japanese Garden. Henry Pittock came to Oregon along the Oregon Trail as a teenager in 1853. Portland at the time was a rough and tumble frontier trading post. He got a job at the local newspaper, the Weekly Oregonian. He did very well there, and ultimately bought it in 1860. He later branched out int... read more

I was looking forward to Portland and we had a bed tonight instead of camping – yippee! We cooked our usual lunch of noodles by the side of a busy road; like 2 waifs and strays and then went to explore a bit of the city; we went to Powell’s bookstore which is apparently the world’s largest independent bookstore, where we sat and read awhile; it was really cool in there (Bry you would love it!). We looked in a couple of shops before returning to the car to head to the Rose Gardens; we ate tea in the park and then looked around the Rose Garden which was lovely; so many roses and we had a nosy at a wedding going on in there. Then it was time to head to Devidas the couch surfer’s ... read more

I'm glad you are enjoying the photos. Most networks are no longer making it easy to save photos (Privacy?) Anyway, on a PC you can print the screen (small button on the keyboard) and paste the result to a Powerpoint slide. Instead of saving the powerpoint as a presentation, choose the dropdown to save as: jpeg. You can do multiple photos this way in one powerpoint. On a mac, choose the utility named "grab" and select the area of the photo. It will pop up as a preview. File>save as> jpeg. And there you have it! Thank you for having magnificent kids! They made the trip even more enjoyable! ... read more

A much needed vacation for us... and a long time coming. Ivan and I have decided that we have got to see where we are from. Share it with each other. Also, Christopher is only getting older and soon, he'll be off working like us all and maybe not be able to travel with us... This first trip was my lovely state of California... I was born and raised out there for the first 28 yrs of my life... then I headed out East when I got pregnant with my son, Christopher. I've been back twice in the past 15 yrs. This was a much needed trip home. I wanted to show off the state that I love so much. Ivan has always wanted to drive along PCH, a dream of his... and well, that is ... read more

My first blog...EVER! This is exciting to share my stories with all the travel lovers out there. Pharmacy rotation ends this week and though I do feel I have so much more to learn, I am ready to move on to something new. I'm still in the process of packing, working on my rotation presentation, and organizing CAA 2011 report. I wished I had some extra time to just relax and let those travel inspiration bubble up inside of me, but my mind has been preoccupied with many obligations. Let's hope the travel inspiration will start to marinate. Where's that "Andrew Zimmerman" inside of me? haha Any recommended reading for traveling to Ghana? I've got my travel book (given to me by a good friend). ... read more

Some may ask "Why did you get married again?" Or "Didn't you get married on 8-9-10?" The answer is "Because and Yes". Last summer was our civil/legal ceremony to be husband and wife. The ceremony we had last night was our ceremony to God to be husband and wife. I had never wanted a big church wedding ever since I was little but Pete and I also have always wanted to raise our children in the church. In the Catholic Church we hadn't received the Marriage Sacrament. This sacrament allows us to have our children, when we decided to start a family after our return from China, be baptized in the church and it also was one of Scott's wishes. Scott was with us in spirit last night. We set the date just 16 days ago ... read more

This week was such a great time! We picked up Mom from the airport on Sunday evening from her long flight from O'Hare via Seattle arriving in Portland around 9:30pm. We didn't have too much set in stone except for our Marriage Sacrament on Friday, June 10th at 5:30pm. Of course, being the family we are, we seemed to fill it will with lots of fun little outings. It was nice that our Mom's could get to know each other a little more and spend time together as they had only met the 3 days in Santa Barbara during our wedding festivities last August. Monday, I had to work 3 meetings so Mom went along with Pete tile shopping for the master suite bathroom. Tuesday, I awoke Mom at 9:30am since I had to work in ... read more
