The forecast for Walla Walla on Tuesday was 99 deg-F. The good news was that it didn’t peak until mid-afternoon. We found another local eatery for breakfast that was great (Clarett’s). It was full of characters and the stories we could overhear would have made a good essay. Most people here seem pretty comfortable in their skin. Normally we end up talking to locals who have been living in Walla Walla for a long time and know about the area. Mind you, we tend to talk to older folk so maybe that awareness of the place shouldn’t be a surprise. Les and I felt quite at home in this city. The first part of the day was on straight, smooth freeways through dry farmland. It was all incredibly boring. However, once we reached The City of ... read more

Today I did something a little surprising: absolutely nothing. I shouldn’t have been surprised. My last break was a week and a half ago, and the time in between has been unusually exhausting. I’ve become worn out, one of the big risks of a long trip. One of my guidebooks warns that this problem will correct itself automatically if one doesn’t plan in advance. Today was the first day I was forced to stay put, so the correction happened and I slept all day. Of course, it helped that I was in Portland, one of those cities where hanging out has been raised to an art form (see July 21st). This hotel has something of a view. My room faces west, so it gets the mountain view Portland is known for (see July 23rd). The center ... read more

Well, today is the day. The first of several days where I have to stay put, involuntarily. I’m not looking forward to it. Still, it has to be somewhere, and Portland is the best available. I chose the city mostly due to the effect it would have on my schedule. I need to have my car fixed by the end of August, because the next month will involve a number of dusty desert environments. I went through the month looking for a chunk of time that covered an area I could drive in a single day. The drive from Portland to southern Oregon along the coast, for better or worse, is the best thing to sacrifice. By perfect coincidence, this strands me in the city I called the perfect hangout earlier in the trip (see ). ... read more

Sitting in the train that will take me away from the West coast and inland to Montana, I have ample opportunity to write a bit about a city that has gone directly to my heart. Portland, ladies and gentlemen, is by far a beautiful and relaxed city, where green energy and the love of nature surpasses consumerism and advertisement. That is except from the fact that Portland, as a city in the state of Oregon, has no sales taxes, wherefore many come to the city to shop cheaply. But except from the occasional shopper, Portland has a certain free spirited vibe about it. I suspect the development of this down to earth West coast city has something to do with the beautiful and lush nature of the region, not unlike Seattle and Vancouver. Portland which is ... read more

Portland is not only about establishing a green image (see ). With a young and vibrant population and with roots in the West coast 70's, Portland has its share of wacky and weird. Something which the city unlike many other places does much to preserve. Therefore, one of the most famous slogans is 'Keep Portland Weird'. In this blog, I'll write a bit about the 'weirdness' in Portland and about some of the quirky things that I've seen. 'Keep Portland Weird' means that Portland already is weird. Historically speaking, Portland can boast with a history similar to that of Seattle and Vancouver. It started as a settlement in 1843 where Asa Lovejoy and William Overton bought a piece of land that later became downtown Portland. Records show that they purchased the area for 25 cent. We are back in the States...for a while, and some serious driving...and no diving! After Seattle, we are heading to Portland. Bear in mind, before reaching Portland, I had no idea what to expect. This is a great city. Way better than Seattle. Here they have way less homeless people. You can have great food for lunch all over, and for less than 10usd per person. There is no sales tax...meaning, no need to calculate each time what will be the final total ...and it make it slightly easier to get a fair tip for service. We stay at the Nines. This seems to be THE address in town. Why not, was way more reasonnable than hotels in Seattle. And the best with our upgrade, we have access to the lounge. In the States this means ... read more

The bluest and deepest lake! We stopped to see Crater Lake on our way to Portland. It was worth it! We weren't able to do any hiking, but we just drove around the whole lake which takes a little over an hour. So beautiful! ... read more

So here we are...a week already gone! We are now in Portland OR! Here are some highlights of the past couple days. San Francisco was of course amazing! There was so much to do in so little time. But we had a good time doing some sight seeing and going out in service. We had a great tour guide that took us to some of the best parts of SF. We ate some of the best food! =D Then we camped over at Patrick's Point...about 20 minutes away from Redwoods National Park. Such a great place to camp...except for the crazy birds that make noise early in the morning and peck at your things looking for food. We hiked at the Redwood National Park and it was so beautiful! We were just in awe throughout the ... read more

I needed a dose of culture today after all that time in the woods, so I spent the day at the Portland Art Museum, yet another regional art museum. Like the best of them (see ), it focuses on a few strengths. For this museum, those strengths are regional art, Northwest Native American art, and modern art. I enjoyed all three. Pacific Northwest Art The regional art started with landscapes from the 1800s. Nearly all of them were some variant of the Hudson River School. Artists treated the landscapes of the Pacific Northwest as a pure spiritual counterpart to the industrial grime of eastern cities, and the paintings reflect this. The highlight of this section is a series of paintings of Mount Hood, an icon to Portland residents (see diary=70598... read more
