We've been in Portland OR for 3 days. Tuesday Sept. 25th - Andy and I Met Kiel's roommate Amillio and we went to Ground Kontrol - an arcade/pub and played mortal combat, pac man, and X-Men. Amillio was really good at pac man. Andy was really good at Mortal Combat. I am not good at video games. Wednesday Sept. 26th - Andy and I went to Kiel's bike shop and borrowed bikes. We all road bikes to a movie theatre and saw the movie "Safety not Gaurenteed" Thursday Sept. 27th - Kiel, Andy and I got inner tubes and floated down the Clackamas River for a few hours. the air temp was about 80-85 but the water was 50 degrees (so it was really cold). Our solution - more beer. Friday Sept. 28th - Andy and ... read more

We got into Portland in the evening and met our host Val. In her profile picture on Couch Surfing she had a white wig and white face paint (taken at Burning Man perhaps?) so we weren't sure we'd recognise her. Thankfully she recognised us as we pulled up to the kerb. After a bit of a chat and unloading some stuff, she took us up to the local Japanese. It's very well known and even on a Wednesday night there was a queue and a 30-45min wait. We put our name on the queue and popped into a nearby bar to taste some of the local brews and chat about quantum psychology and other random things. One of the key aspects of Quantum Psychology is to do with defining or branding yourself or others. For example, ... read more

8th August ’12 Spokane to Portland So today it’s 350 miles to go, it was hot and for the first chunk of the journey we just drove and drove through flat, yellow prairie. When we reached the Columbia River the scenery still wasn’t much better and it was really windy. We pulled off at a service area in the middle of nowhere, which had eating places and petrol stations. As we were leaving I spotted a very unusual character on the corner of the junction holding a sign, at first I thought he must be hitching as he was staring at every car or truck really hard. As we got closer I could read the sign properly and despite what I first thought it said it wasn’t swearing but just said SMILE. So I gave him ... read more

The day started out cool, breezy, and drizzly. Dave & Barb left around 5:45, while Rachel, Tracy, Brett, Randi, and friend left an hour later. I met them at the Kelso food stop, thinking Dave might quit. However, it wasn't raining at the moment, so on he went, with Lucas. Saw Kati & family, then Rachel, Tracy & Brett came in. On I went to Holladay Park to enjoy some time resting in the Lloyd Center Mall. Had a call from Kati, that Barb had crashed. She's ok, but her bicycle is not, so no more riding for her. Dave came in first, as usual! What a guy. Ran into Ron & Peaches, planning to meet them for dinner. Rachel, Tracy & Brett came in probably an hour later, so transferred their bags to them (I ... read more

Monday morning found us refreshed. We walked to PSU, through the extensive park down the center. Saw possibilities for the future: coffee shops, art gallery, music hall, tri-met transportation to and from the Amtrak station and to Holladay Park. Stopped at Kelso for a avocado veggie sandwich, getting home by 2:30 pm. So much nicer driving home on Monday! So, other than being caught in traffic on Sunday, a little drizzle, another successful STP is completed.... read more

My names are Elisabeth Jones and i am from Portland Oregon. I basically love to travel. i just hope I won’t succumb to all the traveling sicknesses that people suffer from when they travel for long hours, either by air, sea, or road. I have never understood why people suffer from these illneses; surprisingly top athletes never suffer from these travelling sicknesses. Or is it because they used to travelling, I mean almost every week their jobs require they go to different destinations around the country. Let me use the example of a team like the Chicago bulls who play in the National Basketball Association Eastern conference, every week they cross the country via road and air to play opponents like the Boston Celtics who just like their name suggests play in Boston. Sometimes they even ... read more

Here's the abstract of the seminar I'm attending: Through its development as an independent nation over the past 45 years, Botswana has been a leader among African nations in designing effective and thoughtful public health policy. Proactive efforts by the government, particularly the Ministry of Health to provide pioneering treatments, research, and education to its people is inspirational and sets the country apart as a model of success in the public health realm. However, in the face of these efforts lie great challenges. The HIV/AIDS pandemic has hit Botswana hard, and this seminar will look at how the scourge has had devastating effects on every corner of society. Aside from HIV/AIDS, which is arguably Botswana’s most pressing public health threat, other dimensions of the public health story will be explored including women’s health issues, healthcare delivery ... read more

Hi all. This is an experiment. I'm going to try blogging as Mary and I drive across country from Portland, Oregon to Pinehaven, our summer residence in Bridgton, Maine. It's an experiment in blogging on multiple levels. First, it's an experiment in the sense that I haven't mastered the downloaded blog software, so it can't be predicted whether and to what degree I'll be successful in emailing material to you. You'll likely get to see me flail around in my attempts. Or maybe I'll just lose stuff in the ether, and you won't get to see me flailing. Who knows? Second, I have no experience in blogging. If I lose interest, my entries may be few and far between. Or I may be a boring writer or choose boring subjects. In that case, you get to ... read more

I really enjoy finding the right tool for the job, and getting ready for a trip provides some wonderful opportunities to obsess about gear. Here's what I'll test on this trip. A Jansport Odyssey 39 backpack. the main compartments look like they'll provide a better configuration for my gear. The 39-liter capacity is generous enough while still fitting in carry-on spaces on planes. Compression straps help hold the load steady. It has a light internal frame and is short enough for my torso. Lots of little pockets and places to clip cups, solar chargers, and sandals. Purchased at REI with holiday gift cards from my family. Thanks, family! A Pacsafe Metrosafe 200 Shoulder Bag. Also from REI, but purchased with my dividend. Thanks, REI. If you've read my travel blogs in the past, you know I ... read more
