I am reading Opium Nation by Fariba Nawa - I picked it up off the shelf at the library because of the name and the cover. I know you are not supposed to judge a book by its cover but that method has worked out for me quite a few times. As I read this wonderfully informative and interesting book about Afghanistan I can't help but be amazed how much power words have over my life. I love books. I want everyone to love books like I do. I know this is an unrealistic goal; however, I truly believe that words and books have the power to change the world. if they don't change the world, books definitely have the power to change individual lives. If it wasn't for books I doubt that I would be ... read more

Danny's Blog Today we left a about 8:30am. Our first stop was at Hillbilly Hot Dogs in West Virginia. This was our second time going to that. They had more items to choose from like new colored t-shirts and hats and more food! Our second stop was a in Columbus Ohio, our destination was a little on the outside but HUGENORMOUS on the inside, book store. It had over 500,000 books!!!! We got a few books. Surprisingly I got most books, well I guess they weren’t really books. I got nine individual comic books and a graphic novel. The nine were all Marvel Comics and the graphic novel was Scott Pilgrim Precious little life. April got some book and a graphic novel. We stopped for dinner right down the street from the bookstore, at a German ... read more

I thought it would be best to start my blog at the beginning of our journey. Even though this was several days ago now, we got up early, finished packing, and were on the road by 7:00. Traffic was not that bad going from Columbus to Cincinnati. From Cincinnati we crossed into Kentucky and ran into our first rain/sleet. Thankfully this was scattered and didn't cause us any problems. Traveling in Kentucky was uneventful and we crossed into Tennessee at this point things started to turn mountinous. Traffic got a little crazier with speeds reaching up into the upper 70s. Eventually we made our way into Georigia. This was about the nine hour point of driving, and we decided to push through Atlanta that night rather than try to fight the morning traffic. Let me tell ... read more

The engine started at 7:20am and we were off on our adventure. I have to include Oscar in the we, he is experiencing it too. We went over a few bumps, thanks to the PA road system, and the refrigerator door flew open and some of the contents rolled on the floor. Oh was Oscar happy. It was a few minutes before I could safety pull over and adjust the contents so the door locked. I had just gotten started again when a HUGE black bear ran across the road. I felt privileged to have seen him and took it as a sign of a great trip. If I hadn't stopped, I would have missed him. We drove to Lock Haven to give my grandson Jeremy some items from home that he requested. It has been ... read more

I’m now in the second of Ohio’s three Cs, Columbus. Today was the day to explore one of the most important historic sites of the trip. First, however, I went to yet another art museum. The Columbus Museum of Art is easy to spot for anyone in the correct area, because the road has a huge archway over it that spells out Art. Columbus Museum of Art The museum just recently reopened after a major restoration. The permanent galleries are located in what appears to be the standard for the Midwest, a Beaux Arts building opened in the early 1900s. On the inside, it features marble and granite lined corridors that really echo when people walk through them. The ceilings are painted to look like mosaics. The galleri... read more

The text of this is "borrowed" from a friend's blog: After nearly three years of waiting, praying, and hoping -- we finally brought Aislinn home! We are overjoyed but also realize this will be an adjustment for our family. We know that all of you have supported us in some way and are grateful for that. Because we know you care for Aislinn and our family, we want to share with you some information that we hope will best equip everyone around her to assist us in laying the strongest and healthiest foundation - emotionally, physically and spiritually. In many ways, Aislinn will be like the children who entered our family through birth but there will be a few, initial differences in the way we have parented in the past. Attachment between a parent and child ... read more

I have not updated in a while. Forgive me for that. Gotcha day was followed by a free day that was due to a change in the US Visa application process. Just after I scheduled my flights the US Government changed their Visa application process from a three day affair to a two day affair. This meant that I could leave a day earlier. The only problem was that doing this would mean changing my flight, which would cost $500. The cost of the hotel room for an extra day and meals would be less than $200, so it was not worth the change. So we spent a free day waiting for the flight. The free day gave me an opportunity to spend a day at the Guangzhou zoo. I went with two other families that ... read more

It is only a few more days until I get to leave and go pick Aislinn up. It is killing me. There is so much to do. So much paperwork to review, food, clothing, toys, books, and medicine to cram into one suitcase and a carry-on. I cannot fathom what is in front of me, so I am not sure what to include. The list given seems long and incomplete. Is one book enough? I loaded some movies onto my computer, will I even have the time or the desire to watch them? What kind of food should I bring? I do not want to pack more than I need, but do not want to pack too few snacks and end up hungry. Will I have enough clothes? What if I do not bring enough toys, ... read more
