6:00 AM. I am up. I should be out by 6:45 to catch the bus that comes by about 6:50. No probelma. Shower, last minute packing (changed from duffel to backpack to duffel). Made sure that I packed the couple of Spanish phrase books and the tour guide to Yucatan.. Ready to go.. I looked out through the window. It is dark out there and it does look - mucho frio. Put the cap on and a jacket (what do I do with this Cancun).. As I walked out through the front door of the building, I saw the bus passing by. Raised by hand and waved at him... He did not stop. Damn it! Now, I have to wait for another 15 minutes in the freezing cold.. There I stood, with hands tucked under the ... read more

All packed and almost ready to go. There were some 'movements' in the stomach area. Now it feels alright. It is ready for 'pollo pibil' and sopa de lima. The feeling is like you have a big worm in your stomach, which gets upset every now and then and starts churning around. I think, I packed too much. Change for 5 days, a bedsheet, towel, blanket (just in case if I have to sleep in the bus station!) book to read, english - spanish phrase book.. etc. etc. I am worried about the bike ride into the Coba park. May have to skip it if the backpack is too heavy. So tomorrow morning catching the 7 AM bus to Uptown and then 7:25 bus to the airport... But if I get up late, I will have ... read more

Well... I am not ready yet. Some kind of stomach thing is bothering me. I got one more day.. Hopefully I will feel better. I don't think those pollo pibil are going to help much when I get there. We will see how this goes. Now, I have the ticket to go and no accomodation yet. Planning to wing it. Here is my plan: 23 Dec: Land in Cancun with the Spanish phrase book (a little secret: though I have a spanish name, No hablo espanol) From Cancun, take a bus to Valladolid. Spend a couple of days there. Visit Chichen Itza etc. * 25 Dec: Coba on the way to Tulum * 25 Dec:Tulum. Spend a day. * 26 Dec: Off to Cancun via Playa Del Carmen May be a side trip to Cozumel. Stay ... read more

Its not that I didn't already KNOW I was out of shape...I wasn't even in denial about it. I just wasn't prepared for the pain of movement. Its crazy how very lazy I've become. A little over a year ago I was in the gym at least 4 times a week...now, nothin'! Oh well. Thats all about to change. The laziness is coming to an end. Our adventure will have know use for laziness. THANK GOD!!!! Yesterday we went out to Lake Lure (made famous by Dirty Dancing). We hiked up a long leaf coverer trail. My lungs loved it. First sign of how out of shape I am. Anyway...we went the wrong way. Wonderful. I couldn't keep up with Adam, I couldn't even see him in the woods. Woods filled with trees with no ... read more

We loved Williamsburg. So well done and surprisingly non-commercial. Very interesting, well-trained docents interpreting 18th century and Williamsburg history. Highly authentic. Candlelight dinners and Colonial menus each night. Colorful torch light fife & drum parade, nice evening of Colonial entertainment with spirits and games at one of the taverns, an exceptional tour of John D. and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller's home (they financed the revitalization - such vision), and much more! Great tour guide at "Shirley Plantation" the largest plantation on the James River near Richmond, Virginia. The 11th generation of the original family is still farming the land. The "schooler" (our RV motor home) is proving very road-worthy. It's a nice cozy place to come home to at night and has its own wine cellar. So nice to move from place to place without thinking about ... read more

Leaving Atlanta, we drove through South Carolina where we were amazed by the fall colors and into North Carolina. We stayed in the small(ish) Appalachian town of Asheville on the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains. As it was tour leader Fitz's birthday, we spent most of the night in a Irish pub called "Jack of the Wood", enjoying a live bluegrass jam (lots of banjos, mandolins and guitars) and decent real ales.... read more

We went to New Bern (North Carolina) for a day. It was very hot, most stores and restaurants were closed in the city center as it was Sunday. Cooled off at the bar in the Sheraton where they had some pretty good drink specials. The waterfront park is nice was redone a few years back. Toilets much better now! - Heather.... read more

So my first entry is not too exciting; I'm still in the United States, but I thought I'd give this first entry a shot while I still had my own computer with me. Tonight is my last night at home. I have everything packed, but it still feels like I am forgetting something. Oh well, I know I have underwear and a toothbrush, so I will survive! Feel free to email me any time (laura.padfield@furman.edu) and I will try my best to get back to you! Also, if anyone wants any cool postcards from Spain or anything, send me your address! That's all for now. My next entry will be ten times better, I promise :) Buenas noches!! Laura ... read more

Well, I just spent the day traveling from Boston to here. What a day! Last night I got about ... three hours of sleep and then got up at 5:30am to pack. For whatever reason I was awake but my stomach was feeling VERY strange. I thought maybe I would get to see one of my friends again before I left but unfortunately he wasn't able to see me. After leaving a little late for the airport (the first sign of a bad day) I had to drop off some Blockbuster movies and get some money from the ATM before I was dropped off (by the taxi) at the terminal. And before I discovered that it was the wrong terminal. For whatever reason US Airways and United Airways are in two completely different terminals at Boston ... read more
