June 4 - 22, 2006 Hot Springs, N.C. - Savannah, Ga. - Charleston, S.C. - Charlotte, N.C. Loop 10,856 miles to date 1,610 miles this leg NOTE: In addition to the updated Route Map, we've made revisions to the Proposed Route Map: for now, it includes Newfoundland! Four and a half months after leaving our Northwest home, we reached the Southeast apex of our round-the-country trip. We first saw the Atlantic on June 15 from the bridge to Tybee Island, Ga., where we spent some of the most magical days of our travels to date (read on!). Our odometer rolled over the 10,000-mile mark just before we reached the coast. And how are we feeling, nearly halfway into our 10-month on-the-road odyssey? Well, as you might expect, there are times when Jeff and I overdose on ... read more

I had to go there. The journey from Florida was a hassle-filled 18 hours, Wilmington being a bit out of the way on the coast of North Carolina. The town is of course semi-famous for its film studios, second only to LA, and as being the location for Dawson's Creek (also One Tree Hill and others). The cab driver on the way to downtown was happy to tell us that he'd driven a few stars around, before going on to a barely related anecdote about how his friend had met Clint Eastwood in New York once. We had some great cab drivers. The town was beautiful, everyone who actually lives there is very proud of it. It was a lot like I expected, although to discover that buildings that I'd always assumed were opposite were in ... read more

Quite a phallic symbol, isn’t it? This is the only lighthouse that I stopped for picture out of sentimental reason. I remember the last visit, 3 years ago, during which time there were three of us. We visited this one in between hang gliding lessons and walking the beach. Memory...it has a way of doing you in if you let it. After the necessary hygiene routine, I said good bye to the sandy beach and left the campground. Must find some coffee. Kitty Hawk, here I come.... read more

Well, I got my final details today. Here goes: The weather in China is very similar to weather here in New Bern---except NO HURRICANES :-) There is exactly a 12 hour time difference between China and New Bern--so if it is 12am here it is 12pm there. If you are in education you will enjoy this! Just found out the schools I am going to visit: Day 4 I will visit Beijing No.8 Middle School the and I will also visit Yumin Primary School Day 8 I will visit a Vocational Technology Institute called Dong Fang Ya Yi Vocational Technology Institute. We are really excited about seeing how they compare to our college. Later on that afternoon, I will participate in a seminar with the Ministry of Education. Day 10 I will visit Fudan University affilitiated ... read more

The thing about traveling alone is that it forces you to look at thing differently. It rained hard during the drive east until I came close to the coast. I have missed the reserved ferry ride this evening and now forced to camp here at Cedar Island. After checking in and paying $15 fee, I parked the van and checked out the toilet facility as well as the ferry that I’ll be on tomorrow morning. Living out of the van is an interesting experience. Officially homeless, I dined on French bread with salami and American cheese that I picked up at Wal Mart before leaving civilization. As the early summer evening by the coast providing plenty of daylight for reading, I cracked open a beer and settled down with a book. The morning came early but ... read more

I am back in Florida. I've been back since May 3rd. I made it to Asheville NC, Wilkesboro NC, Johnson City TN and Nashville TN before I had to head back. My mom had a stroke. She is doing ok. She has been in a rehab facility since the 10th of May. Hopefully she will be well enough to go home soon. After Starr SC, I went to Asheville to see my cousins and my Aunt Mildred. I ended up spending all my time with my Aunt. She doesn’t drive, so I drove her around to do her errands and she took me to lunch each day. We had a great time together. One day we went to this fabulous fish house, Coach House, either in Black Mountain or very near it on old highway ... read more

And so as I sit here on the floor packing for our family trip into the wilderness (okay near wilderness), I catalog for you our survival equipment: *3 digital cameras (which by the way require 3 separate cords to connect the cameras to the PC, plus the luck to have 3 separate memory card formats) *2 Laptops *2 printers (one for photos, one regular) that each come with their own type of USB connection (2 cords) and power cords (4 cords total) *3 MP3 players (once again each with their own specific cord to connect to the PC for download) *Paper (one type for photos, plain white as well) *Cell phone chargers - 2 car chargers, 2 wall chargers *2 memory sticks *1 memory card for my new cell phone that plays music off of a ... read more

We all had a good time at the going away party that Lilita organized for me. My only wish that I hadn’t twisted my left ankle. Will I be ready in time to go down the Grand Canyon? Anyway, we celebrated John’s bday, the guy in black and on the far right, after many people have left. Regina, John’s wife, is next to me and then Lilita and JP. Patrica and her beau flanking my right. In 4 more days, I will be leaving this town to start my cross country trip from the outer banks. The people that come into your life can be grouped into 2 categories: those you keep and those you don’t. Friends are the people you keep and they keep you. Those that don’t are just acquaintances.... read more

May 18 - June 3, 2006 Biloxi, Miss. - Hendersonville, N.C. 9,246 miles to date 1,490 miles this leg Apologies for technical difficulties that delayed the posting of this entry... On May 18, Jeff and I celebrated our four-year wedding anniversary with a significant outing: we went sailing for the first time since leaving Port Townsend. Jeff later argued that it wasn’t really sailing because we didn’t actually set sail. I wonder that after four years of marriage, he doesn’t know better than not to argue with me! Our three-hour cruise on Biloxi Bay was made aboard the Glenn L. Swetmann, one of two replica wooden oystering schooners owned by the Biloxi Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum. The waterfront museum was sadly leveled by Hurricane Katrina, but the two vessels safely rode out the storm tucked ... read more

Wow! I can not believe that there are less than two weeks left before I leave. So far I have sent off for and received my visa. I already had a passport. I have gotten a tetanus shot and read lots of informaton on China. I started with good intentions to learn a few chinese phrases and actually found an awesome site at www.chinesepod.com. This site is out of Shanghai and has mini lessons for Mandarin Chinese which is the Chinese spoken in the areas I will be visiting, but time has gotten away from me and the most I know is "hello" and "how are you". This will allow me come across as really friendly, but that is about it. I have read many articles, some of which my students submitted, a few books and ... read more
