It's spring here in North Carolina. The trees are flowering, the leaves are green and all the freshness of this welcome season abounds. We left what really felt like summer at its hottest back in Florida. Now we are feeling the warmth & happiness of Springtime. Soon we shall see the reality of living in the north: brown sticks! That'd what we say when we see our familiar hillsides. The trees are just brown sticks! The ground is brown also...but hopefully not white with snow! We'll take the brown. We are like in a seasonal reverse time machine. But soon our season will catch up with our Southern neighbors. And all will be good in the world. And Lulu will be happy...she struggles trying figure out what clothes to wear! Life can be a trial for ... read more

"Blowin' in the Wind" ----- that was us! We got up yesterday in Christianburg, Virginia to a few faint spots of white flakey snow....nothing to even think about except to note how much colder it had become. Crank up the furnaces and we were on our way - except Cory turned the wrong way out of the motel. The road was narrowing (bad sign with an RV) when fortunately a possible turn-around appeared. It was sharp, gravely and narrow but as good as we were going to find. It turned into a parking lot for a church. What a miracle. This is at least the 3rd or 4th time we have ended up needing a turn-around AND each time it has been at a church.....how appropriate: when in need, go to church! It has saved us ... read more

We were really looking forward to this trip!! John's Aunt Dosia was in North Carolina for the summer and we hadn't seen her since she 2009. Dosia has been spending summers at the Abernathy Laurels in Newton, NC working at the UCC retirement center and we had seen her there a number of years ago. But this summer she and Greta would both be there and we looked forward to the chance to just spend a little time with two very dear and special people. We waited at home for a delivery of replacement windows and they came in a day early. So we got underway on Thursday about noon and decided to take two days and drive through the Smoky Mountains. Roads were good and traffic was light. Then we got off the interstate near ... read more

I'm still learning the ropes of this blog site so this is pretty much a test run. So we're on the first part of our little journey. We arrived in good ol' "historic" Hickory, NC on Friday evening after a nicely uneventful drive. We're feeling very relaxed. Here we're visiting my uncle Masood, my dad's youngest brother and his family. It's really beautiful and I've already thrown my sneakers on and started exploring the area. It's rainy and chilly but that doesn't stop us. I met a neighbor who let me drive his tractor. I pet some horses and dogs. Took a trip to nearby blowing rock which was beautiful. After chasing dreams of fall and leaves underfoot, we finally found it! We walked the little streets, browsed in super cute shops and then found a ... read more

Well after a couple of days looking around . We took a Lincoln Navigator for a drive, nice but a bit rough, looked at a Ford Expedition but the 3rd seat was quite small and raised at the back, a Chevy suburban, it was really long . Then we found a Dodge Durango, 2004, 48,000 miles where most of them were up over 100,000 miles. 5.7L hemi V8, oh oh oh!! with a 9,000Lb tow hitch and tow package. which means its got a transmission cooler and a big tow bar. Its like new inside it, So we bought it. Kylie and the kids did a bit a shopping the other day, bought some togs and shirts and stuff. Both the kids bought new life jackets as Evan said you need them to go out on ... read more

Goodmorning! I'm writing today from Taylorsville (which is near Hickory), where my friend Denise Woodfin lives. On Tuesday, the 22nd, I left Norfolk, making the ~6 hour drive to Taylorsville. My longest driving day so far. I got here just after Denise left for work, so I just relaxed and went early to bed after Denise and I caught up a bit over dinner. Denise was the Supply Officer on my ship during our 2nd (and for us) last deployment. I have great memories of us trekking all over Barcelona, Nice and a large portion of Slovenia. I mostly don't miss the Navy, but I do miss some of the good moments. Yesterday was a great day. First it's so easy to visit Denise, because she, like me, is single living with two dogs. So it's ... read more

We spent last night in Fayettville with some of Jared's friends from when he was in the Army. We had a great dinner at a restaurant called "The Mash House"...I was expecting it to be a fast food restaurant, it turns out it was a fancy rib restaurant!! We met up with Cimarron and sampled the Red Ale beers while sharing a crab dip appetizer. Cimarron’s wife, Danielle met us soon after and we all enjoyed some fine dining. I had the Balsamic Chicken with Parmesan Risotto…..I am a fast learner and Jared has taught me to make the most out of each meal so I saved half of the chicken to eat for lunch the next day. Jared did the same with his meatloaf…yes, I did say meatloaf. I guess you can take the boy ... read more

The days and nights leading up to an international excursion is filled with excitement and anxiety. Trying to make sure I have everything I'll need is a constant thought and while it interferes with everything I'm doing now in the present it just makes these days stressful. Although stress can be a good thing, sleep is better. Sleep and rest will be my goal the next few days. I need to be ready to go...go...go. Keep checking back because I'll soon be updating this blog while traveling and then I'll have pictures and more interesting information.... read more
