Geo: 35.4742, -83.315We found out that we could drive through The Great Smokey National Park via Rt. 441 for 33 miles from Gatlinburg to Cherokee. We had a great drive and short hikes through the park, and then picked up the Blue Ridge Parkway heading north. The leaves are starting to change but looks like they should peak in less than a week.... read more

Tornado warnings last night in Roanoke. There was a twister not too far from our hotel, but no drama with our location. Rained pretty much all day today, which disrupted our scheduled tour itinerary. It was too wet and foggy too visit a Blue Ridge mountain viewing point, so as a bonus, we visited the Blue Ridge Music Centre. Paul would love this. It is a history of music in the US. All music in the US developed from the Blue Ridge area in the Appalachian range, including bluegrass, hillbilly, blues, rock and roll, jazz, dixieland, etc. As an extra bonus we were treated to a concert by a fiddle player, and a guy named James Bryan. He plays guitar, mandolin, banjo and fiddle. He has toured with Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, and Joan Baez to ... read more

Today is my first day in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It’s the most popular national park in the US. Part of the reason is that many of the land gifts for the park came on the condition that it would never charge an entrance fee. People think the park was created to preserve the mountains. It was actually created to preserve what is ON the mountains, the most biologically diverse environment in the United States. The Smoky Mountains contain the widest range of climate zones in the eastern United States, and they were beyond the reach of the glaciers during the last ice age. The natural result is that these mountains contain a wider variety of plants and animals than anywhere else in the country, and many of them are endangered. It also contains the ... read more

Wednesday, 3 June: We left Serena's around 8:30am, heading for Mason's Mine, near Franklin, N.C. After about 3 hours of driving mostly on small roads, we arrived atg Mason's Ruby & Saphire Mine. I believe this is the only place where you can still dig your own dirt and isn't "seeded". They maintain a board listing all stones found there over 10 carats. There were already quite a few this year, and two were added that day. Unfortunately, neither of them were mine or Manoli's. We spent about 5 hours there and had a good time. It didn't rain and it wasn't that hot. Manoli found 2 smaller, but nice stones about 1 or 1 1/2 carats each. I found 8 stones ranging from 1/2 carat to almost 4 carats, with 2 or 3 nice ones ... read more

Well, as usual, I cannot sleep when I am traveling. So, I fired up the laptop and got online with the internet service at Cherokee Cabin. I found this Smoky Mountain Cabin by searching on the internet, I am now using the internet at their cabin, so I figured I might as well blog about the cabin. It is very private and secluded, unlike a lot of other cabin rentals you will find. It's actually a lot bigger than what I need for just myself, but their rates were so reasonable that I have some extra room to throw my gear for the week. The cabin has 3 bedrooms and 3 full baths, as well as a fully equipped kitchen. Thank goodness there is a coffee maker, as I think I'll probably need it in a ... read more

The Cherokee Indian presence in Cherokee, NC is vast and strong. Just being in Cherokee makes you want to learn more about their culture and past. There is no better place to gain some knowledge than the Cherokee Indian Museum. The Museum of the Cherokee Indian first opened in 1948 and has been at its present location since 1976. The museum went through a major rennovation in 1998, adding an additional 12,000 square feet. The museum recently added a new exhibit which combines computer generated audio, video, and special effects as you go through a self guided tour and browse through the artifacts. The tour tells the story of the Cherokee Indian, starting back 12,000 years ago and concluding at the present situation of the tribe in Cherokee, NC. In the middle of the tour, there ... read more

Well, it has been a little while since I have been to Cherokee NC, but have just arrived in town. The first thing that I notice is of course the climate change. Even though it is still only August, the temperatures today have been in the high 70's, which is a nice change from the 90 degree weather I left behind in Florida! Today is really more about getting settled than doing any sight-seeing. I am staying at a Cherokee cabin rental that I found on the internet, so I had to find the cabin, unpack, and then head to the grocery store to stack up for the week. Swain County is a dry county (which I always forget), so I headed over to Bryson City to pick up some beverages as well. I'll be heading ... read more

Heather Says After an overnight stop in Knoxville we headed to the Smoky Mountains for a bit of hiking and fresh air. Ummmmm well not exactly, when we first entered the "nature reserve" area I felt like we'd entered a tackier, kiddy version of Vegas. It was all about crap theme parks, crappier "family" cabaret shows and themed hotels. After fighting our way through the white trash and traffic jams, we drove into the mountains where we thankfully found some peace and quiet. The scenery was INCREDIBLE - lush green forest with droplets of rain left from an earlier downpour glistening on the foliage like jewels...just stunning!! I took a couple of snaps and we headed down a quiet hiking trail to explore. Taking in the beautiful surroundings and breathing the fresh mountain air, I’d completely ... read more
