Bring on New York!! After spendig 2 nights in Boston, the univerisity capital of the world, it was great to finally reach a large city again! As much as I hate people, I felt more cramped in other cities than NY even though it is the largest city in the US. After dumping my bags at the largest hostel in the world, 6 of us leftover from the tour went down to Ground Zero seeing it was the 5th anniversary of 9/11. I must say is was an eerie feeling to see the still large hole in the ground and the memorial, flowers and etc that are attached to all the fences. The pictures and information put up by the city is simplistic and effective but I think we all realised the impact when we saw ... read more

New York! New York! I survived an overnight 10 hour bus ride from Toronto plus got through customs in NY to arrive dazed and confused at 7am in a subway system I knew nothing about. But a few wrong turns and many questions later I got off the subway emerged into daylight and discovered my lovely new home - Harlem! Just down from the Apollo theare and with streets named Malcom X and Luther King I have to admit some early apprehension. I stood out a little walking around but no-one really hassled me. All the likely suspects were too busy hollering at the local girls so I got by with no problems. The hostel seemed to be surrounded by gospel churches so I gave most people the benefit of the doubt. It was great this ... read more

"It is a spot reserved and sacred to what divine power has already placed there" Frederick Law Olmstead (landscape guy who designed Central park and Niagara Falls Reservation) "Oooooooh ... Watery" Liam James Crouse (idiot) Land, Tierra, Hat Land, çåìëÿ. Water, Agua, Acqua, Vann. Life, Vida, Het Leven, æèçíü. Confused? Frustrated? We were, this was the opening sequence to an 11 min 'informative' film on Niagara falls. So it began "Land, water, life" (did someone say Captain Planet, remember that oh so poor superhero? He had the ability to clean things up and ... that was it), narrated by a woman who by her very OTT performance was desperate to be the next big thang in the voice over industry. Every syllable and every word enunciated and dramatically delivered to the point of shut the hell ... read more

Hi Everyone just wanted to let you know that I am having a fantastic time here in New York city. I spent my first couple of days shopping and Danielle joined me a week ago. We went out and didn't have to pay for a drink all night!!! these accents work really well over here if you know what I mean...and people are really generous. I have met heaps of great people and we are having a ball. I haven't had my photos downloaded to a disc yet so will post them later. So far we have seen the Empire State building, The Museum of Modern Art, have seen a broadway show RENT which was fabulous, have done the cruise around the statue of Liberty at night and saw the Manhattan skyline which is just beautiful. ... read more

Alas, Chris and I had come to the end of our stay in New York, New York, so good they named it twice (much like Cameroon soccer ace Djemba-Djemba...and Lorna - that's right el jay, I totally zinged you on my blog! What now?!). Such a proverbial kaleidoscope of cross-culture Americana is this fine City, you could basically stay there and get a taste of the whole world without leaving. However, we only had 9 days and are going around the world anyway (what's the point going to Chinatown when you can go to China? We came to see America, dagnammit!) and so we set about doing all the things unique to the Big Apple. As mentioned in a previous blog, we had been sold comedy club tickets on our first day while wondering around Times ... read more

What an amazing place to end the trip...... NEW YORK....NEW YORK Lo left me in Mexico with Shel, she had gone home a week before me to suprise her friends for their wedding. So it was just be an Shel in NYC for a week, and what a week it was was! We arrived from the glorious mex sunshine to rain!! It didnt stop for the first few days... while we were doing the tourist things, getting soaked sitting on open-top buses etc! But New York amazed me from the minute I arrived, it is like no other place I have been to. We stayed in an apartment, just off Time Square. We had a lovely view of the city from our window.. the Empire State building. We did all the usual stuff.... coffee, deli's, broadway ... read more

According to a diminutive Manhattan local who tried to flog us tickets to a comedy show in Times Square, there are 2 things you have to do when visiting New York City; 1 is catch a show on Broadway (The Wedding Singer - check) and the other is go and visit the Statue of Liberty (check - see previous blog). Presumably, watching a comedy show comes in third, explaining why we fell for his subtle sales techniques and bought the tickets. He did, however, fail to mention one of New York's most iconic attractions - the Empire State Building. Leading world building for broadcasting duties, climbing post for amorous monkeys, even a rhyming couplet on the now legendary Frosties advert (one of the many things I miss from back home...they're gonna taste grrr-eat!!). Yep, I don't ... read more
