As I write this, tomorrow our last full day in New York, the day after we leave and head back to England - and our epic journey comes to an end. It's very sad!! I am looking forward to being at home and seeing everyone and showing off pictures but another part of me just wants to keep on going round and round the world! But anyway - New York - we've had three full days here - spent neatly split between three sections of Manhatten - downtown, midtown and uptown. At downtown we walked over the Brooklyn Bridge which was cool, and checked out buildings round there like the City Hall. We then got on the (free) Staten Island Ferry which conveniently sails right past the Statue of Liberty so penny pinchers like me and ... read more

Currently sitting in a VERY cool apartment in Soho, it's gorgeous! The young couple we're staying with are so nice and took us out for drinks last night, though unsuprisingly we didn't pass for over 21 and ended up drinking Coke. :-) Did a tiny bit of touristy stuff yesterday and wandered down to the World Trade Centre. Saw a fireman sitting on the front of his truck as we were walking back and cheekily went up and asked for a photo, resisted buying the "firemen of NY" calender for now though. Off to get breakfast from an American diner, pancakes and some very strong coffee (bloody jet-lag!).... read more

As I lie here at 2am in my welcoming room I am aware that from here on out everything changes. You see tomorrow morning at 9am I get in the family car and speed off to the airport. There I will catch a plane to Sapporo, Japan to begin my new life as an expatriate in a land I cannot comprehend at the moment. I haven't set off like this in six years!! I can't believe that everything that I have been working for the past five years has come to fruition. Ever since I got back from 2001 I have been looking to move to somewhere more exotic, somewhere different. I could have left immediately and become a teacher of the English language, but I wanted something more substantial. Something that would give me better ... read more

After having pinched myself for the past few days, I think it's finally hit me - I live in New York City! I'm not a tourist wandering the streets looking up as if they've never seen a 30 story building before and pissing off the natives in the meantime - I actually live here. Trust me, once Grant picked me up from the airport and we started weaving through traffic to get to our restaurant on the upper east side, I began to morph into "one of them". I think I remember him actually looking at me as I shouted "Hey, c'mon what are you waiting for!" as a cabby sat, double parked at a green light (which is really common here I am learning) and he replied with "Well honey, I think you're fitting in ... read more

The Big Apple We arrived in to New York close to midnight, the town was alive and steamy- the heat escaping from the subway & rising through the grills in the middle of the street. We’d been travelling all day to get here so were keen to check in to our hotel in the trendy Tribeca(triangle beneath canal street) district. Maybe MGM had spoilt us but we were not impressed to turn the door key to find the tiniest room, tiniest bed & tiniest bathroom ever - we could not even open our luggage at the same time due to the tiny floor space. It was straight back down to reception to ask for a bigger room upon which we were denied - ‘Sorry, no other rooms available’ - had our luck run out? The Staten ... read more

Nearly ready With less than a week to go we are all starting to get excited. Eleanor has fled the country and is with Guides in Switzerland. She gets back on Saturday pm. and we fly out to New York early the next morning. Matthew and Christopher are "relaxing" before the holiday really starts. I'm hoping they will pack before Saturday. Sorted out more of the holiday - we will stay in Orlando for a couple of nights as I got a good deal on the Walt Disney World Dolphin hotel. Then it's over to what looks like a great villa at Tarpon Springs, just north of Tampa for 9 or 10 days. ... read more

Wow!! We just returned from the Broadway production of “The Drowsy Chaperone”! It was a hugely enjoyable comedy/musical so cleverly scripted and produced. I guess we are looking at the some of the best performers in America so they might have been expected to do such a fine job. Our internet tickets were at one edge of the main floor. After talking to the usher letting him know we were from Canada and wished we had had a better choice of seats for early booking, he bent to whisper if some better seats were not taken right at opening, we could move over. He did return just a minute ahead and whispered we could take seats on an empty row two or three behind us and way over towards center. We made the move and wouldn’t ... read more

Caught the train to Brighton Beach (near Coney Island) in an attempt to run away from the 30 degree plus heat the crazy heat wave was causing! Had an excellent swim in the Atlantic and after a few hours went to the Museum of Modern Art to walk in air-conditioned comfort. Some souvineer shopping and a snack of Dunkin' Donuts (couldnt resist) killed some time until we went back to the hostel, threw on some washing and met some people from the hostel for a trip on the Staten Island Ferry. Had free pizza in Brooklyn and chatted to some really cool people and decided to go into Time Square for a beer. It didnt really matter that we were 3 years underage, we had a pint of Sam Adams, and some more chatting and visited ... read more

Here we are, located now in the Vanderbilt New York YMCA, only 2 blocks from the United Nations Building and only about 9 short blocks from Grand Central Station. We were pleasantly surprised that, after a few comments and discreet questions while registering, there was a room WITH a private toilet and shower that we could take for a little higher price; $110 up from $88 per night. Instead of bunk beds it also has a queen-size bed. However, when we opened the door we realized the room had not been made up. So we are awaiting the housekeeping services. In the heat of the day, after transferring here and being made to wait until 3 to register, thus wandering to Grand Central Station and such, in and out of A/C buildings and shade and sun, ... read more
