I am four weeks away from take-off day, Friday, September 14, when I leave for Hong Kong with a one-way ticket I bought. I will be staying with my cousin Sandi, whom I have never met, for the four or five days I am there. From Hong Kong I will be flying to Bhutan, a small kingdom nestled in the Himalayas. I will actually be flying to Bangkok on September 20 for the evening to catch my early morning flight to Paro, the only city in Bhutan with an airport (it opened for the first time in 1989). I will be there until September 30 when I fly to Kathmandu, Nepal to meet up with a tour group to trek around Nepal and Tibet...I finish up October 14. From there....who knows. Wherever I want to really. ... read more

Well, it's all over! After eight countries, 100 days, one 28th birthday, and thousands of miles flown/sailed/ridden across/walked... I am now sitting in my parents' kitchen in Floral Park, New York! It's good to be home, but hard to believe my trip has ended. I had an amazing time and no end of incredible experiences... now I just need to figure out how to take it all with me as I move on to my next adventure(s), whatever they are! Here's a recap of my final weeks as a wandering traveler: Skydiving It takes 10 minutes to gain altitude. The scenery is just stunning. I am quite calm, but my legs have a mind of their own and are shaking slightly. At 12,000 feet the door opens, and in an instant we're on the edge. 45 ... read more

And a happy summer vacation to all and to all a good night. I am on my summer vacation right now. How anyone does without one I do not know. It is a great time to free your mind or turn it off and give it some much needed rest. You can do whatever you want. Last weekend I attended a friend's wedding in Manhattan. The reception was in Central Park. I saw the most beautiful scene I had ever seen in my life. The sun set over a man made lake. The pinks and greens were so vivid. It was like I was standing in the middle of a painting the leaves were practically dripping acrylic. If only I had brought my camera! My first year in Japan was a huge success. It exceeded my ... read more

We decided to leave tonight and head out to the east end of Long Island. I've been thinking about going out there all summer but just hadn't put any definite plans together. I try to get back to Long Island once a year. I grew up in Quogue, a little town just east of Westhampton Beach. I have family out there and it's important to me that my sons know them. I also get a kick out of showing them the house I grew up in, the schools I went to, where I had my first job, etc. We got a call today that my grandmother is not feeling so well, so tonight's the night. We'll pack a cooler full of food, a couple of suitcases and hit the road. She's in her 90's and I ... read more

The journey is finally underway! We had a limo service (a mini-van actually) drive us to the airport in DC. We left Reagan National this afternoon - about 45 minutes late of course. Flight to JFK was smooth and quick. JFK is a really big facility - took us a while to get luggage - quite a hike to the baggage area. Ian called us and said he would meet us at the Airtrain (the JFK shuttle train between terminals) station. We all took the shuttle bus to the hotel and had dinner together. Great to see him and catch up on his life in NYC - he is doing very well. There are severe thunderstorms in the NYC area this evening. Lots of power outages, flooding and plane delays. Glad we arrived ealier in the ... read more

Sorry it's been so long since I last wrote on this! I promise I haven't been lazy - it's just been impossible getting on a computer for anything other than Greyhound/hostel/hotel booking recently. We were reduced to using the local Holiday Inn last week to book stuff - we even managed to use their shuttle (yay my being so tight with money!) rather than forking out for a taxi. It doesn't look like we've been far since I last wrote (NY to Long Island!) but we have been to Washington DC and Chantilly, Virginia in between (and Maryland on an impromptu bus stop. There were no cookies). We only actually made it into DC today because of the ridiculous transportation costs otherwise. It was good though (and I'm getting arm muscles from all this backpack carrying. ... read more

Travel to IstanbulJoel SchroederI left from LAX last night just a bit before midnight and landed at JFK around 8am, beginning a long day of waiting...our flight to Istanbul departs at 6:45pm. Rick and Kathy, the rest of the crew, were delayed out of Portland and got in at 10am. We went to a nearby Howard Johnson hotel to relax in a room since we've got so much time. Luckily, our hotel in Istanbul will be much nicer, as we have rooms at the Four Seasons. Back at the airport, we were able to hang out in the Korean Air executive lounge, which was nice because of the drinks, snacks, and internet. We won't land until about noon on Tuesday, Istanbul time.... read more

What do you do on a Saturday morning? Head to the Atlantic ocean, of course !! From White Plains took a train to Grand Central, walked from GC to Penn station, caught a train on the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road) got off at LynBrook and caught another train which finally took us to Long Beach. Phew !!!! took us 3 hrs in all ….but traveling in U.S. is rather stress free …not much crowds…information readily available, no dust, no heat …so basically even a 3 hr journey with so many changes doesn’t tire you out and you head for the ocean, fresh as a daisy ;-) Now Long Beach is a rather small place and just a 3 min. walk from the station leads us to the beach. It’s a huge stretch of clean , ... read more
