Today we had to sadly leave Rick in Alpine and start our journey back north. We had a long drive straight through to Santa Fe. As we wanted to get to Santa Fe early enough to be able to do some sight-seeing, we left Alpine early and hit the road. The drive was uneventful. We drove north through the Guadalupe Mountains and saw El Capitan, the highest point in Texas. We also drove right past Carlsbad Caverns but did not stop to visit as we have been there a couple of times before. We stopped in Roswell, NM for a nice lunch and finally arrived in Santa Fe around 3:30 pm. We have a lovely hotel (our splurge night!) at a historic hotel just around the corner from the historic plaza and across the street from ... read more

Today was a totally rocking day! We ate burritos at this restaurant in Santa Fe called the Bumble Bee's Baja Grill. Mom says "I had a "naked" burrito with asparagus and it was scrumptious!" My burrito had black beans, rice, pico de gallo, and cheese in it. I would give it 9.5 on my official Burrito Scale. I took off .5 because it was a little "too spicy!" It was, like all of the past burritos, perfect in every way imaginable! The restaurant looked really cool inside because there were all of these bumble bee pinatas hanging from the ceiling! We went to the Palace of the Governors museum. It is a "monumental adobe structure that housed the residence and offices of governors from its construction ca. 1609 until it became the state history museum in ... read more

July 3, Friday We were up a bit early again this morning, although the temps had been very nice the past two days I didn't know quite what to expect the coming day to be. I wasn't sure if we'd hold the elevation or drop down low into the desert temps again. I-40 to Flagstaff, then off the dreaded "Interstate" and on to what was marked as BIA 15. I think this stand for Bureau of Indian Affairs since we were on Navajo Indian Lands. This was a very nice, but very lonely several hundred miles of traveling, and it was all high desert so temps stayed nicely in the upper 80's. We stopped for coffee and a pastry in Dilkon at the Basha Grocery store, and wandered through a major flea market in Window Rock ... read more

Twinks and I were on the road at 5:15a.m, on the way to Albuquerque, we had to pick up Dale at 12:40. We sailed along but I was watching the clock. Then I remembered that NM time was likely not the same as Oklahoma time. A rest stop was in order and after a quick bowl of cereal I found that the time was different so I had an extra hour to get to New Mexico. We got into Albuquerque and down to the area but without thinking got off on the exit before Sunport Blvd. Of course there was road work going on so it was impossible to get back on the freeway for 1 more exit, we had to go several miles out of our way then come back up to the exit we ... read more

So we headed to our state capital for a day of fun (it is always a beautiful drive leaving Albuquerque and the SANDIA MOUNTAINS behind). We just don't have that many days where we both are off. So off we went. Our first stop was the PALACE OF THE GOVERNORS. Apparently the oldest public building in the US, but don't hold me to that. All over the States it seems that whatever you see it is always the "biggest" or the "oldest". It's been turned into a museum now so not anything really special, but they did have a room with pictures taken from different periods/ decades from New Mexico and it was great seeing these pictures and being able to see how certain areas have developed over the years (for Christmas we bought a really ... read more

Santa Fe--the Southwest's home of the restaurants and art galleries. June is a great time to visit, with warm but not-too-hot days and cooler evenings. During our visit, the economy is down somewhat, and even though it is my first trip here, people are saying it is not as busy as usual. After a couple of expensive dinner bills, however, I figure the local businesses can't be hurting that bad. ... read more

Santa Fe, Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, Via Sedona, San Diego, Via Corona, Via Torrance, LA Day 21 - Monday 06.04.2009 So I learnt a little fact today - New Mexico is in the mountains (I knew that already) and so the altitude here is quite high (that is no the fact, wait for it). I learnt that this is the reason my nose hasn’t stopped bleeding for 3 days - lovely. I thought id start this week’s blog off with a bit of useless information for you all. I sit writing this while I'm sat at the Grand Canyon waiting for the sun to set - it’s beautiful. But that is for making you all jealous later! So Monday morning; we wanted to get a good start on our drive to the Grand Canyon as it was ... read more

I'm still alive, just been too busy enjoying the company of my family, and the stunning views, to stop to write about it for the last few days! I plan to flesh out the details of some of my adventures in the future, as I have plenty of pictures. However, for now, here is a brief synopsis of what I've been up to and my pretty solid plans of where I am going next. When last I wrote, I was in a Starbucks in Sante Fe. After finishing that article on Jim Bishop's Castle I cruised to downtown historic Sante Fe for a quick survey. Driving through this tiny capital of 60,000, I admired how even the McDonald's had the adobe look going for it, making the town very pleasing to the eye. It really became ... read more
