Today we had to sadly leave Rick in Alpine and start our journey back north. We had a long drive straight through to Santa Fe. As we wanted to get to Santa Fe early enough to be able to do some sight-seeing, we left Alpine early and hit the road. The drive was uneventful. We drove north through the Guadalupe Mountains and saw El Capitan, the highest point in Texas. We also drove right past Carlsbad Caverns but did not stop to visit as we have been there a couple of times before. We stopped in Roswell, NM for a nice lunch and finally arrived in Santa Fe around 3:30 pm. We have a lovely hotel (our splurge night!) at a historic hotel just around the corner from the historic plaza and across the street from the oldest government building in the US - The Governor's Palace. There is a lot of old history here as this area was settled by the Spanish who came in rom Mexico. We have both read an great historical book about the area and find it fascinating to see all that we have read about. We did some walking around for a couple of hours
Our stop for margaritas
The Ore House on the plaza and then found a nice restaurant for dinner. We also stopped at a couple of plaes and made some small purchases of mementos to bring home. It started to rain at about 8:30 so we came back to the hotel and are just relaxing. We were going to stop tomorrow in Denver to meet a friend but he is unable to meet us so we will plow on through to Cheyenne, WY for tomorrow night after spending the morning in Taos, NM. Tomorrow night may be my last blog for this trip as we will not be stopping anywhere interesting after Taos and will just be high-tailing it home. Hopefully, I'll get some good photos from Taos to share.
