In January I was lucky enough to attend a sales meeting in Santa Fe. In the past I had driven across New Mexico when en route from Phoenix to Milwaukee but I didn't have much of a chance to see anything apart from gas stations and rest stops along Interstate 40. This time around I was able to take in some of the sights of the capital city of Santa Fe as well as the surrounding Sangre de Cristo Mountains. In arriving in Santa Fe I first flew into Albuquerque where I boarded a bus for the two hour or so ride north to Santa Fe. Once we were outside the city limits of Albuquerque the scenery reminded me a lot of the times I had spent in Arizona and the frequent trips I would take ... read more

THE AMERICAN ADVENTURE ET LE WEDDING IN SANTA FE We eventually hit Trace and Marc’s about 4pm in the midst of tears, laughter and lots of screaming. In the coming hours we of course got to know Marc and his wonderful Moma and Popa and her gorgeous son Josh - enjoyed a beautiful BBQ dinner cooked by Trace as she plied us with wine in preparation for giving us our “duties list” for the coming days - I never knew Tracey could be so organised - it was most impressive. Revy became 3037B, parked outside T&M’s front door ,in a partially opened state, so we didn’t disturb the neighbours in their Cul de sac too much. In the 3 days preceding the wedding (which by the time the wedding came seemed more like 3 weeks) we ... read more

We woke up today and packed up our tents and gear into the trailer. Most of us weren’t brave enough to face sharing a shower with all those bugs so we all went without. I was so happy to leave this campsite and after the last couple we were all hoping they wouldn’t get any worse. We got in the van for our drive to check out the city of Santa Fe. We stopped off in Roswell just before lunch to have a look at this famous town. The other trek group arrived and we went into the Roswell museum. It was full of information about aliens and conspiracies but after briefly wondering around the museum we came to realise that it was kind of lame. We looked through the tacky gift shop but didn’t dare ... read more

We spend the night at a KOA in Santa Fe. We got in to town at about 5pm and did a lot of window shopping. Stores and stores of jewelry and southwest style clothing. We had a tasty dinner at a Mexican restaurant (of course!) and then wandered a bit more. It was a perfect evening with a full moon and a clear night full of stars..... We are headed to Colorado today to finish the last few days of our trip... We will most likely check out Durango, Denver, Fort Collins and Windsor. I will sit down sometime next week and post pics and put more details in my entries. This has been a once in a lifetime opportunity for me and I thank you all for joining us along the way!... read more

Days 49-53, 13th September to 17th September Route 66 - “The Mother Road” as coined by John Steinbeck in his novel “The Grapes of Wrath”, was the first road in the US that really connected the East with the West. We picked it up at St Louis, Missouri. Having obtained a detailed map of the Missouri route from a very talkative lady in the route 66 state park, we set off to follow the route as closely as possible. This soon proved frustrating though - although 85% of the original road still exists, it is not a continuous route and is no longer an official highway. Some of it has been paved over by modern highways; other parts exist as small sections of minor roads which have fallen into disrepair. One of the major problems we ... read more

Texas really isn't the most interesting place to travel through - nothing to look at the whole way apart from fields, fields and more fields. There were some truly awful people on our bus, as usual, including some woman who sent her kids up and down the bus begging for food. We finally arrived in El Paso for our stopover and I think it's fair to say it's the poorest looking city we've seen so far on our trip - the whole place is like one huge market stall with some fast food restaurants. Back on the bus and across the border to New Mexico where the scenery improved vastly and the sky was filled with more stars that we've ever seen - it was lovely. Got to Santa Fe at around 2.30am after 22 hours ... read more

Hey guys, Just a quick update.. Forget to mention in my last blog update that before wegot to Del Rio we went to San Antonio and saw the Alamo which was pretty cool! Since Del Rio we have been to Carlsbad where we dived deep into some caves and saw some 300,000 bats leave the caves for their nights hunting - quite a spectacle! And today we have arrived in Santa Fe after passing through Roswell (a UFO hotspot!) which ticked my interest buds but loads of the guys thought it was rubbish! lol - I was wondering if there may be a smallville but unfortunately not! So yeah gonna do some exploring around Santa Fe tonight and have some southern cuisine tonight! We are also loving the Wallmarts and buffet Golden Coral's - the sight ... read more

June - July 2007 We've been here since Tuesday, June 5. Our friends are starting an organic farm on fields that have not been plowed for probably 20 years. We are in their casita ( a small guest house) overlooking the fields. Huge Cottonwood and Elm trees tower the edge of the fields, mosquitoes swarm in the early evening and mornings, the acequia (irrigation ditch) tumbles along outside our front door (hence the mosquitoes), the crickets chirp and the birds sing. Seti and Meggie, Djann and Lisa's two cats make a daily patrol to our house. Rain, our kitty cowers when they look in the door, but she is getting used to being in this house and so we confidently let her outside yesterday morning. She only wandered a few feet and came back inside. That's ... read more

Santa Fe is known as “The City Different” and when your eyes fall upon the adobe houses and Spanish courtyards that makeup the city, it’s easy to understand why. Brian and I were pleased to find that our Bed & Breakfast had us staying in a truly Santa Fe style house; an adobe building with chili peppers hanging on the front door for decoration, a kiva fireplace in the room, and southwestern accents throughout the room. After getting settled in we decided to find the main Plaza and get a bite to eat. The Plaza is a square in the center of Santa Fe closed down to cars and lined with southwestern shops, restaurants, and street vendors (mostly Native Americans selling jewelry). While it’s a nice area, (certainly worth visiting) it seems a bit like ... read more

We arrived in Santa Fe last night (Tuesday) after a long drive through Oklahoma, Arkansas and Texas. No internet access at the Oklahoma City Campground or at our friend Hazel's so I thought I'd do a quick entry at the Santa Fe Public Library and catch up with some great pictures later. Here's a quick summary of the long drive: the roads in Oklahoma were so bad the ride shook the airconditioner screws loose (easy fix) -- we did stop along the way for a stretch and a round of the "oakie" pokie with the boys. Mark wouldn't stop in Arkansas except for gas (I think because we were too close to Clinton territory). As we moved across Texas and got closer to New Mexico, the views were simply breathtaking. A quick stop in Texas ... read more
