Singing of "Rain Rain Go Away" failed to have the desired effect, so my first day in the White Mountains was rained out. I did a little bit of planning for the rest of my time in the White Mountains, a little bit of just driving around the forest, and a lot of sitting in traffic where there were huge backups going through the nearby small towns.... read more

9 August, 2013 We said goodbye to Gena and Bob Wednesday night, as we knew they would be out early the next morning. They have to be in Southwest Harbor, Maine, for a wedding on Saturday. We always have fun together and will miss them. We were undecided what to do next, but upon consideration and discussion, are making our way toward home and family. We left Baddeck a mere 3 hours behind Gena and Bob, about average for us. We drove across Nova Scotia and then through New Brunswick. Trans Canada Highway 2 (TCH 2) is a funny road through New Brunswick. Between Moncton and Fredericton you don’t see any other cities, just exits. Again it was like driving on a four-lane through the wilderness. Between Moncton and Fredericton it started raining and continued all ... read more

We had a wonderful ride from Bangor to Gorham NH. We did 95 for an hour. 95 in Maine is deserted. We made good time to the north western part of the state and to our favorite roads. We took route 17 to an amazing lookout out called the "Height of the Land." From the lookout you can see some lakes, mountains and forest. You do think you are at the top of the world. From there, we got on Rt. 16, our very most favorite road in New England. Lots of elevation changes and sweeping turns. The best part there is virtually no one else on the road. We found a pond (or what we now know is part of a river) on our travels four years ago. We have a picture of this spot ... read more

Geo: 44.0915, -71.7023This is the 11th day of our trip. We have travelled through Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, Ontario, Vermont, and New Hampshire, and driven about 1,460 miles. This morning, we left Burlington, VT and drove by Shelburne Farms. Shelburne Farms was the winter retreat of the Webb/Vanderbilts. It is also still a working dairy farm. From there, we made the 2-1/2 hour drive to White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire. After a 5:30 storm blew through, the temperature dropped and we had steaks on the grill and wine at camp.....ok, I had a steak; Sheila had grilled vegetables..... read more

Geo: 44.0456, -71.6706Today we were going to the White Mountain National Forest and the night before during dinner the waitress suggested driving the Kancamagus Highway. Our first call was to the visitor centre to pick up guides and maps. As there was warning of storms and even flash floods we opted to buy some rather retching rain ponchos. We set off on the highway stopping off for a quick trail along the Pemigwasset River. This was set within large fir trees and was very pretty. On the way we stopped at some scenic overlooks but they were hampered by low clouds. We persevered and stopped at Lily Pond where we had been told we may see a moose although we heard rustling in trees, nothing materialised. Our next stop was the Sabbaday Falls which was a short hike ... read more

Welcome to NH!!! I have poison ivy on my legs and the mosquitos are the worse they have been the entire trip!!! ...but we made it full circle! We are back in New Hampsha' and soaking up our last few days out here on the *Open Road*. We decided yesterday instead of bouncing around to a few other places between NY and NH what we really wanted to do was set up camp and relax for the last few days-and that's what we're doing! We set up home at Bear Brook State Park in a nice shady site. It felt like we had the place to ourselves yesterday ...today a few neighbors rolled in but it's pretty quiet. We found a 99 last night and were able to catch the Bs game...until they closed at 11 ... read more

Love affair: rekindled and hotter than ever. Romantic weekend away: Route 302 Roosevelt Trail steeped in history. Exactly what we needed to spark the romance. Away from the rat race. Unbridled joy. Candlelit dinner: Naples, Maine, hitting so many beautiful inns, B & Bs, lakes, watercraft, rich man's game. Freedom vs. containment. No more same of the same as on the coast. Exciting new vista each turn. Little black dress: White Mountain National Park. Beauty, can't take your eyes off it, waterfalls, mountains, cliffs, trees, train track.Nightcap: Mount Washington Inn, nordic ski lodges, ski hills, white water rivers, skidoo paths. Laughing again on the bikes. Exploration. Imagination. Strawberries on the pillow: Thayers Inn circa 1843, railcar diner, rapids in Littleton, New Hampshire, covered bridge. Fuel for the fire. Do not disturb. See you in the morning. ... read more

So Boston is done, so now on to the next state. We again had kind of a loose schedule. Here is a little story of how we got to taste Budweiser on a craft brew tour. Anheuser-Busch, Merrimack, New Hampshire http://anheuser-busch.com/ We were originally not going to tour this place. We had decided that this vacation was about craft brews only. However, we had an opening in the schedule, and we decided that we should see what the big guy does. A bonus of stopping here was that we were able to see one of the three Clydesdale teams in the Unites States. 1. Shock Top Pumpkin Wheat Hazy amber color. Light body. Pumpkin aroma but not flavor. 2. Budweiser, Lager Probably the best Bud I have ever had 3. Shock Top Midnight Wheat ... read more

Autumn in New England is truly special. Every fall as the days grow crisp, leaves lose their green chlorophyll, revealing the natural colors underneath. They turn an already memorable landscape into a kaleidoscope of beauty. The leaf display appears across the temperate zones of the world, but New England’s combination of hot humid summers, chilly dry falls, and range of deciduous tree species makes ours rank among the best of them all. The scenery is world famous. So many people travel here this time of year that our high tourist season, which in most of the United States ends in early September, lasts nearly two months longer. That popularity creates an obvious downside, lots of people and clogged roads anywhere near a view. Decades ago, I found a solution: put o... read more
