Europe » Germany » Berlin June 3rd 2017

Geo: 52.5257, 13.3687Today we had to say goodbye to Berlin, but first we had to pack (well one of us did). We checked out and headed into the centre. First we stopped at the Mall of Berlin for a quick look and then we thought about walking to look again at some sites. But, the weather had other ideas and the the rain was pouring down.We decided instead to stay in the refuge of the mall and grab some food. We looked in a few more shops and then it was time to head back to collect our luggage. After a few navigational hiccups, and a few tubes in the wrong direction, we arrived at the central station. We went to the hotel and collected the luggage. Then we went to the station and had a ... read more

Geo: 52.5237, 13.3671Today started as per usual with breakfast and a coffee but this time we had it to go as we had a long tube ride ahead of us. We headed out of the city and disembarked at the Olympic Stadium. This was a huge site and we were very excited to see inside. So we headed to the ticket office and disappointment struck - it was closed due to some event, so we couldn't go inside. We got to admire it from behind the gates and we tried to walk around but the gates remained closed. We walked round the front again and got a good view of the Olympic Rings in front of the stadium. The stadium is still used for events and football, and was even the place the final game of ... read more

Europe » Germany » Berlin June 1st 2017

Geo: 52.5236, 13.367We awoke and the sun was once again glorious and warm. So we got dressed and headed to the train station. We had a quick pit stop for some breakfast and coffee. We then hopped on the tube to our first stop (with our hotel we got free transport pass which has come in very handy). For the first sights we had to hop across to Museum Island, which - as the name suggest is an island with a lot of museums on it. First we saw the Old National Gallery which was housed in a beautiful building, and the columns outside housed bullet holes which act as a permenent reminder of the cities recent past. We then wondered up to look at the Pergamon Museum, this looked pretty but was under going a ... read more

Geo: 52.5236, 13.367This morning started with a quick coffee to go in the train station, we had too much to see to stop and enjoy it. We then walked to a park which had a beautiful water sculpture in it. Continuing on we got to the Berlin Wall Memorial. This was a fantastic place to visit as there were large segments of the wall, as well as lots of information and pictures of what it used to look than. This Memorial would have been situated in between the wall, and would of been no man's land. We then hopped onto the tube and went to visit the Brandenburg Gate. This was an impressive archway and is one of the most famous landmarks in Germany. We walked through the gate to attempt to visit a Soviet War ... read more

Geo: 52.5235, 13.4115Today started with an early start to get to the airport. We did get stuck a little in traffic, but made it in plenty of time. Even had time spare for coffee (we always have time for a coffee!). We arrived at the gate nice and early to get on the plane and then it was announced it was overbooked and they were offering people 200 euros not to fly today & get the next flight. Nicky had to restrain Simon - the offer of 400 euros for us both and the chance to do more work was a big temptation. After the restraints had been lifted we boarded the plane (already delayed at this point) and we were informed that there could be an hour delay! Luckily the pilot managed to get this down ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona February 22nd 2017

Geo: 41.3867, 2.17566This morning was off to a more mundane start as we had to pack - well one of us had to pack and the other lay in bed (no prizes for guessing which way round this was!). We checked out of the hotel and headed for a now morning ritual of coffee and pastries to start the day. We then hopped on the metro and headed out of the city. The destination was the Nou Camp, and we got there but weren't allowed into the ground so just had to make do with a quick look around the outside. We then hopped back on metro back into Barcelona. Alighting at Las Ramblas we took a little detour around the Gothic Quarter for one last time. We then headed back to the diner we had ... read more

Geo: 41.3867, 2.17566This morning started with a coffee and some tasty pastries in a local coffee shop. Before we bravely ventured into the metro system and got on the metro to Sant Pau Recinte Modernista. This was a former hospital which was a beautiful building. The architecture in Barcelona is so detailed and stunning. After this we took a stroll down to the Sagrada Familia basilica, which was stunning even though it is still under construction, so the varying styles were interesting. This was a popular place and the queues were too long to consider joining, especially as this was the hottest day of our time here yet. We then wondered down to the Toros monument de Barcelona, this was another former bullring but this one had been transformed into museum. We then decided to enjoy ... read more

Geo: 41.3861, 2.17629After a later start (although the cleaner banging on the door at 7am had other plans) we headed into the sights of Barcelona. It was a glorious day with not a cloud in the sky and it was warm enough for no jackets and just hoodies. First things first we needed some breakfast of sorts, so we hunted for a cake shop. We found a lovely one and had coffee and cake for breakfast.Next we headed to the Arenas of Barcelona. This was a former bullring turned into a shopping centre and you could take a lift up the side to a 360 degree view over the city - well the surrounding areas but was still pretty. We then wondered down and meandered through the shops.Out of here we walked to the Magic Fountain. ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona February 19th 2017

Geo: 41.3861, 2.17636So after an early start (made earlier by a Rory who was too excited to play with children to sleep), we headed to the airport. Brilliant journey and parked up and got through to departure lounge. After a much needed caffeine fix we got on the plane and arrived in Barcelona. We navigated our way to shuttle bus to take us into the city centre. Which gave us a little scenic route on the way. Before we could start exploring we needed to get rid of the luggage. We found the hotel with ease ( it's really nice - just what we need) and luckily our room was ready so we could freshen up and re-examine outfits for the Spanish sun. Now we were fully ready to explore this beautiful city. We took a stroll ... read more

Europe » Austria December 2nd 2016

Geo: 48.218, 16.3825Today we had quite a late start, but once we were out we took the short walk to praterm. This was an amusement park which housed a Ferris wheel. So we bought our tickets for our ride around. This gave us not only views over the park itself but also over Vienna. This was quite cool to see. We then took a wander around the park, however, a lot of it was closed due to it being early in the day. Then we walked to the nearby train station and popped into McDonald's for a hot chocolate and slice of cake. Our adventure next took us on a multiple tube ride across Vienna to visit Schonbrunn. Upon arriving there was a Christmas market to explore, and it was rude not to examine each stall. ... read more
