THE BASICS Really, we have driven from Indiana to Nebraska through a lot of rolling hills and flat fields. We spent a warm day in Chicago, and have enjoyed college towns in Iowa - Iowa City and Grinnell. It has been quite hot, up to the 90's, but breezes during the days and air conditioning indulgence at night have helped us be relatively comfortable. We should get to our target of Fort Collins, CO, by Tuesday, as planned. THE FLUFF John began his birthday celebration with an extended internet session. We motored to the RV/MH Hall of Fame in Elkhart, IN. They have a huge collection of very old RV's, which are very rustic and made us appreciate ours even more. They have the first Fleetwood Bounder ever made - quite different from our model. We ... read more

Left on a Saturday and back the next. I always try to do my road trips in a circle with as little back tracking as possible or going somewhere we have already gone. North from Texas straight up through Oklahoma, Kansas and half way into Nebraska. Then Northwest the rest of Nebraska into the South Dakota. 2 nights in South Dakota. Then West to Wyoming and three nights in Cody, Wy as our base for Yellowstone. Then Southwest down through to Colorado and a night in Cripple Creek, Co. Then home the next day cutting across the corner of New Mexico and West Texas. Really today was just a big driving day. Made our way to just over the Kansas border before lunch time. Stopped at McDonald's for lunch then since we were making good time ... read more

How can you get up at 6:30 am and not get on the road til 9:15? I am an expert at getting distracted. The morning on the lake was just beautiful. The temperature was 47 degrees outside so there was mist coming off the lake. I had to get dressed warmly to go outside and enjoy my coffee, my UMBC hoodie kept me nice and warm. The crows were talking, the herons were flying in for their favorite fishing spot, and the king fishers were in a fallen tree watching for their breakfast to appear. I took a few pictures, got out the binoculars and watched as the sun rose and the drama unfolded. So many fish jumped it surely must have been their breakfast time. Before I knew it it was after 8 and I ... read more

Wed stayed the night at a Super 8 hotel in Hannibal which by the way is the boyhood home of Mark Twain. The area between St Louis and Hannibal had been the prettiest part of the Great River Road. We left the hotel at 9:15am onto 36 west heading out of Missouri. The early morning temp was 54 but it had risen to 60 by 9am and there were the usual blue skies with puffy clouds. Route 36 is a 4 lane divided highway which traverses the northern 1/3 of the state. It took about 3 1/2 hours to cross Nebraska at this point. There was a brief area of very flat farmland but mostly it was very hilly and dotted with farms. We saw some cattle farms and one bison farm. Many of the fields ... read more

We had a pretty good travel day and got ourselves into Grand Island Nebraska before I started hitting the rumble wakeup strips.... True road trip, Mel made us up some sandwhich's and we just motored away the miles, she kept me on track with paper maps (see "Notes" below...ugh) and fed tid bits on the states we are in. We got to see the Mississippi.... Yeap Kids Thats the Mississippi, The Mighty Miss - Ol'Man River..... (for you Lampoon lovers). Illionois was very Indiana but we really loved the rolling farm land of Iowa... hit the Norman Rockwell Romance button on my love for this country. So that was our inspiration for our first sunset picture but it turned out more set then sun. The car has been a GREAT tow vehicle, really happy it is ... read more

We had to go into Grand Island to go to the Post Office and to the bank. We like the neat and tidy farms. Their yards all around the barns and outbuildings are clean and there's no junk piled up anywhere, no rusty old tractors, no piles of barbed wire, nothing. It must be their German heritage. They had large lawns. It looked like they just mowed whatever was growing and, voila, a lush, green lawn - and no sprinklers! We also liked the town of Grand Island. It was clean and the people were friendly. There were some signs in town that were in Spanish. We had coffee once in the Blue Moon. HaHa! The owner said that the economy there was all right. They had a meat-packing plant and there were two ethanol ... read more

The second day and third, I went tru what I call, the 800 miles dead zone; no digial cell phone signal! hehehehe... Any way, I got to see land that I have not seen for over 4 years. I forgot how tough is to live in Wyoming and Nebraska. These are lands of real cowboys. You have to be one to survive the winters here! hehehehe... Most cities in this area of the country are wide apart in distance, like 100 miles in between. For instance, Wyoming is 401 miles on I-80 and Nebraska is 458 give or take one mile. Of course, the "dead zone" really starts in Utah on the canyon of I-84... So is really about 900 miles!!! hehehehe... Well, lets see what Iowa has in store for me tomorrow! Good night to ... read more

Slept in probably a little too long this morning, then left from my parents' home on the long road to Nebraska. It was a really overcast, humid day, which unfortunately didn't make for the best scenery to look at. Spotty rain all the way west. Again, not a whole lot to report, just powering through the long drive on the way back. Again though, lots of time to think and reflect. I *love* driving for that reason!... read more

This morning I spent the last 4 hours of my life at my perfectly...um, interesting...ex-job! I had thought about leaving for so long, and I had long pictured in my mind just what exactly that moment would be like when I left the building and drove home for the last time. And now, quite honestly, I can't even remember how any of it happened. So I'm taking off to wherever the open road takes me. I feel the call within me to explore, to reach out beyond my little world. Well, that's part of it - mostly I just have to GO. May the road rise up to meet me, the fields be green, the wind at my back. All that. The only place I know I'll want to be for sure is Boston. We'll see ... read more
