Day 1 - Big Travel Day

Long but pretty easy travel day. Pretty much straight up 35 then start jogging NW.

Left on a Saturday and back the next. I always try to do my road trips in a circle with as little back tracking as possible or going somewhere we have already gone. North from Texas straight up through Oklahoma, Kansas and half way into Nebraska. Then Northwest the rest of Nebraska into the South Dakota. 2 nights in South Dakota. Then West to Wyoming and three nights in Cody, Wy as our base for Yellowstone. Then Southwest down through to Colorado and a night in Cripple Creek, Co. Then home the next day cutting across the corner of New Mexico and West Texas. Really today was just a big driving day. Made our way to just over the Kansas border before lunch time. Stopped at McDonald's for lunch then since we were making good time killed an hour or so at the Kansas Star Casino. Nice small casino - very clean & made a good rest break.
http://www.kansasstarcasino.comThen came the drive through Kansas and corn and corn and corn. Wow. So much corn. Got to the hotel about dinner time. We stayed over at the Sleep Inn. Pretty disappointing compared to other stays at Sleep Inns. First they didn't have an elevator and I had advised of during reservation that we had to have first floor as my Dad has mobility issues. Second floor without so much of an apology and too late to find something else. We wrangled our stuff up the stairs. Mom got tickled about something & made the stairs into a waterfall. Sorry for your carpet should have had a first floor like I asked for! Then time to find dinner. Found an Applebee's - good enough. Our first crack up of the night our waiter who was Chinese. He was here on a student visa attending U of Nebraska. My dad didn't care but the extra veggie he wanted was going to cost him "one point three nine dollars". Was kind of funny has he kept repeating it. But then I asked him what he was studying here. LOL - American Finance & Economics. Had to give him my lesson - it's a dollar thirty nine. LOL

Sleep Inn - 1716 N. Diers, Grand Island, United States. We needed a first floor room but were given a second floor room. We had to drag everything upstairs big fun. And get my dad up the stairs a couple of times with his issues. Then that night my dad stopped up the toilet or my mom did - no one really knows only that it was stopped. Called front desk and the guy brings them a plunger. Dad had to plunge it! I do realize this upper level budget hotel but basic maintenance should be included.
