Left the beautiful Tetons and headed over Teton Pass into Idaho and then up Route 15 to Montana. We had lunch in Dillon, MT and stopped in Bearmouth for the night. Nice quite campground until around 3 am and then the trains came whistling through until about 5:30 am. We are heading to Glacier National Park.... read more

From Red Lodge Jeff and I parted ways (If you don't know what I'm talking about see the previous entry about the Beartooth Highway), he headed back west towards Bozeman and I continued on my way to the Crow Indian Reservation for Crow Fair (the tribes yearly summer pow-wow). Once I was on the "rez" I was supposed to meet my very good friend Cheryl and her girlfriend Lisa. Unfortunately I took a wrong turn and ended up going for a very long drive through the Crow Reservation to Bisby, which is in the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. So I stopped called Cheryl and found out she was running late as well. She suggested I go and visit Little Bighorn Battlefield and taking her advice I turned around and headed back to Crow Agency. On the way ... read more

070817 Missoula MT to Wenatachee National Forest Washington Here's a picture of what I looked like when I got off trail....nice and dirty. Missoula was fun, but I felt like I was imposing on Chad and Corey had things to do before he went back on trail next week. I heard that Kat wasn’t living in Missoula anymore and Anne was nowhere to be found. Friday Chad and I went to a place called Sandy Beaches…it’s a bunch of small sandy beaches along the Alberton Gorge. On the way Chad and I saw something that made both of us spontaneously explode with laughter for a good five minutes. Missoula was covered with a thick layer of smoke from many forest fires in the surrounding area. Chad’s roommate Sam had even asked us if we wanted a ... read more

I left Medicine Hat early on Saturday August 11th on my journey south. I have been blessed with wonderful daughters and great sons-in-law. When I left Louisiana in May Debbie had sent me on my way with food for the journey and Bobby had helped me clean the outside of the RV. On Friday Kevin had cleaned the outside of the RV (I helped), and on Saturday Jayne sent me on my way laden with frozen meals. I had decided to take a different route out of Medicine Hat than the one I took on my way there. This time I headed east then south through the Cypress Hills to Montana. The trip was very peaceful through some very pretty countryside. The border crossing at Wild Horse is quite something. Two houses one on the ... read more

Let this be a warning to all who decide to half ass the planning of a fairly long distance hike! My friend Justin Van Almelo and I had earlier this fall planned to do a hike up into the beautiful Spanish Peaks area. It was going to be an amazing loop taking us from the Hell Roaring Creek drainage up to Hell Roaring Lake and back to Lava Lake, where I would have previously parked the old black toyota to fly us back to Bozeman at the end of the weekend. Because Justin had to work on Friday, I generously offered to pack in camp, like some crazy super soldier and have it all set up and dinner ready for him by the time he got to camp. That weekend ended up being nothing like that ... read more

Next stop was with more gracious and hospitable relatives in the small farming community of Glentana, North East of Ford Peck Indian Reservation. This whole area is grain country, and according to an article in the Great Falls Tribune on 4th August, the quality of wheat grown here is ideal for making “big, fluffy buns” as used in McDonald’s Big Macs. Glentana has a permanent population of only 12 residents, but has its own church and post office. This used to be a thriving little community, but like many similar settlements in this area it has declined in recent years, as individual homesteaders are no longer able to compete with the big land owners. There are several derelict buildings, including an impressive old school house and a few deserted homesteads, complete with old, rusting farm machinery. ... read more

We spent the last few days travelling across Washington State, the tip of Idaho and East into Montana, staying with extremely gracious and hospitable relatives along the way (Thank you!). The highlight of the scenery for us was undoubtedly Glacier National Park, with spectacular views of the Rocky Mountains and ice clear rivers and streams formed by ancient glaciers. Unfortunately some of the views were a bit hazy, due to smoke from local forest fires. The road through Glacier is pretty spectacular, and very popular with bikers. Along the route you can see where wild fires have whipped through parts of the forest, the trees being slowly replaced by wildflowers and other flora. Out of the park and on the road East towards Cut Bank, the smoke from the wild fires was clearly visible, and gave ... read more

Haven't sent a message since we were in Ontario. We have now crossed Manitoba, Saskatchewan, part of Alberta and are now back in the USA in Great Falls, Montana. Had a 4 day stop in Winnipeg to visit David's cousin Karen and her family. Had a great visit. Got to experience some of their annual Fringe Festival, play Canadian 5-pin bowling, eat great food, do a little kayaking and talk a lot. We are already looking forward to their visit to Las Vegas and our next visit to Winnipeg. We arrived in Great Falls on Wednesday, July 25, after 2 long days of driving from Winnipeg across the great plains of Canada. The land in western Manitoba and eastern Saskatchewan is so flat that a prairie dog mound would stand out as a hill. Unbelievable farmland. ... read more

070724 Lazy L&B Ranch, Dubois, WY Driving from Idaho Falls through eastern Idaho and into Wyoming was a great drive. Jackson, Wyoming is a cool looking town, I’m going to stop by at some point in the future as I’ve recently met someone who’s going to be living there, John, is one of the wranglers at the Lazy L&B Ranch. Coming into Wyoming and passing through Teton National Park was amazing…Dubois, the town with the ranch was only 55 miles from Jackson so I expected it to be the same amazing forested, mountainous landscape as the Tetons. I was getting excited! The 55 mile drive between the Jackson and Dubios took 1.5 hours due to the construction they were doing on the highway. Eventually the road started going down, out of the mountains and my apprehension ... read more
